Pouring It Forward with Savagewood Brewing Co.

We have all seen how beer can help make a difference, from the Black is Beautiful collaboration to the newly-launched Curtain Up Beer Project. So, when Savagewood Brewing Co. wanted to collaborate with female beer blogger Beer Babe Jess (Jessica Merritt), they immediately knew they wanted the collaboration to be for a good cause. The end result is Pouring It Forward, a Raspberry Ale featuring a special hop blend from the Pink Boots Society (Ahtanum, Cashmere, Citra, Loral and Sabro) with proceeds going towards the Big Sister League in San Diego.

By collaborating on a signature beer together, Savagewood and Merritt are hoping to raise awareness around women in the industry—and give back to Big Sister League (BSL) of San Diego. BSL is a nonprofit organization providing supportive housing for women in need. Their services are designed to assist women affected by mental health issues, homelessness, trauma and domestic abuse. You can learn more about their mission and donate directly if you are unable to pick up the beer here.

Ultimately, they decided on a raspberry ale for the pink color and the fact that their brewer, Darrel Brown, is known for working with fun ingredients and interesting brews. They were able to get a hop blend specifically from Pink Boots Society, an organization focused on assisting women in beer through education. Of the beer, Merritt says “I absolutely love beer with raspberries, and Darrel does all kinds of interesting brews. I’ve got a sweet spot for pink beer and knew this could be something both beautiful and delicious.”

Rachel Delgadillo, the Social Media Manager and Beertender at Savagewood discusses how important seeing women in the beer industry is. “This collaboration helps support women in beer because it creates a highlight on the potential in the beer industry. I think there are a lot of women who see the beer industry as a male-exclusive industry, simply because beer has primarily been marketed towards men. However, when you see women working the tap room and women brewing beers it negates that belief that the beer industry is only for men.”

Not only were women involved in the making of the actual beer, but they partnered with a female can designer, Britnee from Craft Graphics. Since Merritt was involved from throughout the entire project, from beer style conception to recipe ideas to can design and more, it was important for her to choose a great designer for the can art. Of Britnee, Merritt says “Brit at Craft Graphics is so talented and rad. I knew immediately that she was the one who had to make the vision in my head come to life.”

In celebrating Women’s History Month, Savagewood has brewed a delicious beer that not only supports women in the craft beer industry, but also gives back to those in need.
