Heineken Ad Proves We’re Not All That Different, and Beer Brings People Together

We all have different opinions and different views of the world, but it is key that we learn to have open and honest discussions about those differences. If no one is willing to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, you end up with a divided nation full of people who are more interested in stalling their opponents’ agendas than in finding a path toward the common good. The new “Worlds Apart” video from Heineken posits that beer can be key to discovering that common ground.
This is by no means a new idea. People have been squashing their beef over a brew for centuries. However, this video shows the process in action. The opposing pairs work together as a team to complete the task of building their bar, before discovering that they have very different ideas about the shape and scope of society and the world. They are then given the option of walking away (presumably to return to their favorite online echo chamber) or to talk it out over a cold beer. Of course, they all choose the latter. By the end of their talks, it would appear that everyone is at least willing to respect the other person as a human being. That in-and-of itself is a vast improvement over the hateful vitriol that is spewed in the world’s comment sections.
Can beer bring people together? Yes, but only insofar as it physically gets them to the table. When you’re sitting across from someone, you are no longer shielded by the anonymity of the internet. You actually have to look someone in the eye. Having a real conversation over a beer also allows you to express wider, more complex ideas than you can in 140 characters on Twitter.
Beer by itself probably won’t unite the warring political factions of the world, but maybe it might have the power to get us talking to each other. Heineken might just be on to something here.
