Roundtable Discussion: Thrift Shop
For this week’s roundtable discussion we decided to ask our staff what they would spend their money on at a thrift shop with $20 in their pockets. This is what ensued. What would you do with $20 in your pocket?
Charlie:
Thrift stores are absolutely the best place to pick up high quality bar and glassware. Want to serve martinis in traditional coupe glasses? Thrift shops are full of the otherwise uncommon stems. Want a set of pilsner glasses? Done. Steins? They’re filled with them.
So let’s say the glasses cost a buck a piece. I’d snag four coupes, four pilsner glasses, four traditional beer glasses, four chalices and spend the last $2 on your granddad’s clothes.
Erin R:
I’m a big fan of extremely tacky lamps in interesting shapes. I bought a dinosaur lamp for $6 once. I am an extremely practical shopper. With my leftover $14, I’d seek out the choicest tacky Christmas sweaters. Preferably with lights.
Cory :
I would buy vintage games like Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. Hell yeah.
Sue:
Picture frames, jewelry, books and a Schim Schimmel puzzle.
Mike Z:
A Chicago Cubs starter jacket…and not one of the new ones they are re-releasing. Vintage early 1990s version.
Vic:
Probably a bunch of 70s era kitchenware, a velvet Elvis, and an Xmas sweater.
CVM:
I can’t be sure of specifics as I am a total impulse buyer. Whatever it is, it will be stuff I will be VERY EXCITED about until I get home and realize I have no use for any of it. Then is will sit in a corner for one full year until I donate it back to said thrift store.
Nate:
Flannel. Always more flannel.
Josh:
Probably go with something of the Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis shopping list.
- something pink
- green gator shoes
- leopard mink
- velour jump suit
- house slippers
- brown leather jacket
- broken keyboard
- skeet blanket
- kneeboard
- Pro Wings velcro sneakers
- wolf hat
- fur fox skin
- plaid button up shirt
- flannel zebra jammies
- telescope
- a big coat
Drew: 90s NBA jerseys. Nothing like finding a solid Muggsy Bogues jersey or rockin’ Karl Malone’s look. I’ve never NOT bought an NBA jersey at a thrift shop.
Lauren:Puzzles and games with missing pieces.
Phil: More 1-piece ski suits likes this:
Josh: Last think i bought from thrift shopping: a members only jacket. Thing I always look for: Adidas track suits.
Andy: Used hobby equipment, AKA forgotten and discarded hopes and dreams.
Phil: For those that don’t understand Andrew’s reference to ‘Used hobby equipment’ what he really means is used Shake Weights.
Lauren: I was assuming he meant thigh masters.
Nik: True Love.
