Kona Brewing Co. – Koko Brown
26.7 IBU
5.5% ABV
What I went to Jungle Jim’s looking for and what I came home with were two completely different beers. Nevertheless, I was pleased with my choice. Kona Brewing Company’s Koko Brown is an ale brewed with coconut, and I absolutely LOVE coconut! Coconut candy, coconut shrimp, coconut rum…you name it, I want it. Unfortunately, I know a lot of people who don’t enjoy it as much as I do, so I don’t get to eat it (or in this case drink it) as often as I would like.
Koko Brown pours like a root beer, a deep mahogany color with a thick, foamy, off-white head, and it roils like a stout. You can definitely smell the dark chocolate malt used in brewing, but not so much the coconut. Nor can you really taste the coconut either. Maybe because it’s toasted? Considering that was my main reason for purchasing this beer, I was highly disappointed. However, just because it wasn’t what I expected doesn’t mean it’s a bad brew. Overall it is a decent nut brown. It does have a slightly sweet finish and a nice mouthfeel, but I can guarantee the flavor is not for everyone, and honestly it probably would not be my first choice. If you’re feeling adventurous, go for it, otherwise I’d give something else a try.
