Bison Brewing | Organic Chocolate Stout
Bison Brewing’s Organic Chocolate is one of my favorite stouts, and has been for the last few years or so. It is rich in flavor without being heavy in the body, and low enough in alcohol to be sessionable. This is definitely NOT a sweet stout. (If sweet is your thing, check out Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate stout.) Brewed with Peruvian cocoa and roasted barley, this beer boasts big coffee and dark chocolate flavors.
Bison describes its Chocolate Stout as “Barry White’s voice in a bottle,” and I agree. It pours an opaque dark brown to black, with little to no head. The roasted barley is evident in the nose as well as the taste, and the finish is all chocolate. This stout is definitely lighter in the body than many other stouts and porters, but the huge flavor adds a texture all its own. I like the fact that I can knock back three or four of these without getting that full belly feeling that stouts are somewhat notorious for.
Good beer is good, but an environmentally and socially conscious brewery is even better. Bison has been around since 1989, and received their organic certification in 2003. They are also certified by several other environmental organizations, and are active in the sustainability movement. I have had several of their other brews, and have loved them all. You should keep an eye out for the Honey Basil IPA and the Hop Cuvee, as well as the Organic Chocolate stout!
