2017 Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines Pour List Preview
As the 2017 Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines festival approaches, I always have one question: what will be poured at the commercial tasting session?
While the festival promoters kindly posted this useful tasting program, we also reached out to brewers to collect beers from them directly. We’ll keep updating this list through the week as submissions arrive. Check back and you may find some late changes or last minute additions! Thanks again to all the breweries who helped us compile this list.

Upslope Brewing Company | Barrel Aged Doppelbock | Our brewers found inspiration across the Atlantic Ocean for our latest installment of the Lee Hill series , brewing a traditional German Doppelbock with premium German malts and Bock yeast. Aged for 5 months in 3 different barrel types- Maryland Style Rye Whiskey (50%), Anejo Tequila (29%), and American Whiskey barrels (21%) created a perfect blend of classic brewing and American ingenuity. Floral tequila notes, vanilla, and spiced pecans overlay a nutty, raisin like malt structure to create an innovative barrel aged lager. |
Upslope Brewing Company | Wild Christmas w/ Cranberries | ""Funk the holiday spirit!"" Our brewers set out to transform our annual holiday offering with an extended stay(10 months) in our favorite whiskey barrels with our house sour culture. Brettanomyces imparted notes of candied orange and leather(?) overlay restrained holiday spices, dark cherry caramel character and whiskey spiced oak, are all punctuated by a mild tartness and hint of chocolate on the finish. Warming and dynamic, our take on a wild Christmas. " |
Upslope Brewing Company | Yirgacheffe Coffee Dubbel | Done as a collaboration between Upslope Brewing and our Lee Hill neighbors Dragonfly Coffee Roasters, this unique beer combines the bubblegum esters of Belgian yeast with the roasty blueberry flavors and aromas of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee. The two come together to create a sweet aroma somewhere between cotton candy and plums, balanced against a subtle coffee earthiness. The flavor is a perfect balance between the semi-sweet flavors of the dubbel and the smooth bitterness from the coffee. This beer is sure to please, and change any preconception you may have of what a ""coffee beer"" is supposed to be." |
Urban Chestnut Brewing Company | Apotheosis | This French-style Saison was first brewed in collaboration with the fine folks at The Royale to celebrate the Feast Day of Louis IX. Named after the statue of St. Louis that sits atop Art Hill, this farmhouse ale is a tribute to our beloved city. Alcohol by Volume: 5.3% Hop bitterness (IBU): 18 |
Urban Chestnut Brewing Company | Cherry Thrales | Peter the Great loved English Stouts and requested them for the Russian Imperial courts. Unfortunately, the beer could not survive the long journey until 1796 when London brewery, ThraleÕs, increased the alcohol content and hopping rate in their stout creating the Imperial Stout. As a nod to Peter and ThraleÕs, weÕve ÒimperializedÓ this Stout by fermenting it a bit further with sour cherries. Alcohol by Volume: 9% Hop bitterness (IBU): 50 |
Urban Chestnut Brewing Company | Fantasyland | "Midwest" Coast IPA Alcohol by Volume: 6.5% Hop bitterness (IBU): 60 |
Urban Chestnut Brewing Company | Kinsale | Named for the southern Ireland town boasting a Caribbean sister town of the same name, this Foreign Export-style Stout has become an Irish-perfected, Caribbean-loved style of beer. Historically generously hopped and full of roasted malt flavors; our version leans toward the creamy, sweet side of things. Alcohol by Volume: 7.0% Hop bitterness (IBU): 27 |

Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Barrel Aged Mexican Achromatic | 13.2% ABV Barrel Aged Mexican Achromatic is an Imperial Stout inspired by Mexican hot cocoa, a drink that traces its roots back to the Mayans, Aztecs and Spanish in Mexico. Brewed with obscene amounts of roasted cacao nibs, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla beans and aged in Breckenridge Distillery bourbon barrels, Barrel Aged Mexican Achromatic is a rich, decadent beer that evokes the innovative spirit of brewing while paying homage to its Mexican heritage. |
Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Coffee Coconut Stout | 8.0% ABV Coffee Coconut Stout, as you may have guessed, features loads of toasted coconut and freshly roasted Peruvian coffee from our friends at ZoeÕs Cafe here in Downtown Greeley. The sweet, creaminess of the toasted coconut offers a perfect complement to the complex character contributed the Mama NellyÕs coffee, a blend of four different roasts of the same direct-trade Peruvian beans. These delicious, unique flavors are supported by a full-bodied, yet balanced base stout brewed with both lactose and flaked oats for mouthfeel and a variety of chocolate malts, crystal malts, and roasted barley. |
Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Double Dry Hopped Juicy Bits | 7.0% ABV We took Juicy Bits (our popular New England-style IPA featuring a huge citrus and tropical fruit hop character with a softer, smoother mouthfeel from the adjusted water chemistry, higher protein malts, and lower attenuation) and dry hopped it with more than double the amount of Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado hops, bringing the total hop rate up to more than 6 lbs per barrel, the most we have ever used in a single IPA. |
Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Mexican Achromatic | 10.2% ABV We created Mexican Achromatic by infusing our rich Achromatic base stout with generous additions of cacao nibs, cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans to create a beer reminiscent of Mexican hot cocoa. The spiciness of the cinnamon sticks are a wonderful contrast with the rich, dark chocolate notes from the cacao nibs and the vanilla beans top it all off with a creamy, decadent sweetness. |
Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Mocha Achromatic | 9.5% ABV Mocha Achromatic is another iteration in our Achromatic series, which starts as an Imperial Stout brewed with an obscene amount of chocolate malts, oatmeal, and crystal malts to lend a sweet, robust malt backbone as a canvas for the adjuncts. We boil for more than 6 hours to achieve the unbelievably rich, chewy, thick mouthfeel of the base beer and ferment with a clean, attenuative yeast strain to keep the focus on the malts and adjuncts. For the Mocha iteration, we infused the beer with generous additions of both cacao and freshly roasted Mama NellyÕs blend coffee from our friends at ZoeÕs Cafe, which features four different roasts of the same single origin Peruvian beans. The roast character from both the coffee and cacao complement the sweetness of the base beer. |
Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Nutella Achromatic | 10.5% ABV The newest release in our Achromatic series, Nutella Achromatic is brewed with hazlenuts, cacao nibs and cocoa powder. |
Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Peach Climacteric | 7.2% ABV The first official release from our mixed-fermentation barrel-aged sour program, Peach Climacteric starts as a blend of pale sours, all aged in barrels, ranging in age from 4-17 months and fermented with various strains of wild yeast and bacteria. The final blend was then aged on over 1,500 lbs of Palisade peaches, yielding one of the most ambitious and complex beers we have produced so far. |
Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Peanut Butter Cup Achromatic | 10.5% ABV For PBCA, we take the decadence of our base Achromatic stout a step further with a huge addition of peanut flour (note of caution for anyone with peanut allergies) and cacao nibs. |
Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Peppermint Mocha Achromatic | 9.5% ABV A special holiday seasonal variation of our Mocha Achromatic infused with peppermint. |
