My girlfriend Laina and I have been together for more than three years. We live together, have a child together, and love each other a lot. It’s not all rainbows and unicorns, though. Just like in most relationships, disagreements arise. Our fifth-largest bone of contention is control of the car stereo. In my car we listen to brilliant podcasts. My girlfriend’s car stereo is almost always tuned to the country station.
I grew up in a region that is chock full of country music fans. For example, one kid drove his tractor to my rural Pennsylvania high school on a disturbingly frequent basis. My early musical tastes, however, came from my parents. My father listened to 70’s and 80’s rock. My mother loved Billy Joel. Country music was always around, but I never had to listen to it… until recently.
My girlfriend is a HUGE country music fan. She’s been to more concerts than even she can count, and can somehow tell the difference between the various artists. Here’s what it sounds like in my girlfriend’s car.
