Got a Passion for Writing About Beer? Join the PorchDrinking Team!
What started as a fun side project for a bunch of former journalism majors, who loved shooting the shit and drinking craft beer, has grown into something pretty exciting. Over the past six years, PorchDrinking has become a leader in covering the national beer scene by remaining squarely focused on great storytelling, promoting craft beer through positivity, and not taking ourselves too seriously. We’re looking to grow our team across the country in 2018.
We’re actively recruiting writers, editors, staffers and people who are generally hungry to get involved and share a passion for beer and storytelling.
And while this is still a side project for us all—we can’t currently provide writers or staff members with consistent monetary compensation as of now—there are still a number of perks to being part of the team (occasional press credentials, access to beer samples, opportunity to showcase work, a family of like-minded passionate beer friends across the country).
Check out a few of the positions/writing assignments we’re looking to fill:
Copy Editor
We’re looking for seasoned journalists who have a passion for copy editing and editing for style to join our ranks. We’d prefer applicants be well-versed with AP-style, and have a basic understanding of and aptitude with WordPress. Copy Editor duties require the ability to edit and schedule articles one night a week, every week. If you love reading about beer, and enjoy copy editing we’d love to have you be part of this incredible team.

The ideal candidate would also have a tremendous background and wealth of knowledge in beer. This Social Media Coordinator will train under our Social Media Manager and learn to help schedule posts on both Facebook and Twitter. Ideal candidates would have a basic background in content calendar planning and social media strategies.

News Editors / News Reporters
Do you have a keen eye for what’s currently happening in the beer industry? Do you have the tenacity to turn around a news story in an efficient, yet thorough manner? Do you have the journalistic mindset to conduct thoughtful research and interviews? We’re looking for news editors and writers to help break stories, hunt down potential leads, and conduct research based non-biased reporting, and share great content from other sites. We believe in strong storytelling, so we’re looking for a team of writers who are able to go beyond a press release to present more than a run-of-the-mill story from a national scope.
News Editors and Reporters should be willing to conduct research by interviewing breweries, follow AP-style, must be willing to pitch stories and adhere to deadlines to their best ability. Familiarity with WordPress, and an ability to take quality photos is a bonus.

Feature Writers
Since PorchDrinking’s inception, we’ve sought to expose our readers to interesting new beers, and breweries while keeping our coverage fun and approachable. We need writers to help tell great stories about beer within their region.
Feature writers should be interested in helping produce beer showcases, brewery showcases, local guides (where to drink, eat, explore), and other feature pieces such as our themed Ultimate 6ers, and more beer related series.

Beer Showcases
Each morning we feature a unique beer. For these showcases, we ask that our writers learn something interesting about the beer that may not be well known by the common consumer. This can involve finding out how a beer got its name, why the brewer chose to brew that exact beer, or any other interesting circumstances surrounding the creation of the beer. It’s also important to actually describe the beer with notes on smell, appearance, taste all while remaining interesting, creative and unpretentious.
Beer Features
We also pride ourselves on thinking outside the box with our creative and sometimes off-beat beer features. We’re looking for creative minds to help produce one-off beer features such as brewery showcases, local guides to cities and neighborhoods. Content can also extend to lists such as the 5 must-try Springtime beers to try in a specific region, best brewery patios in a specific region, 10 can’t miss soon-to-open breweries within a specific region, or even a list of beers made with interesting ingredients.
Recurring Features
We’re also looking for people to specifically helm certain recurring features on the site. These pieces can often tie into music, pop culture, and sports, as can be seen in our themed Ultimate 6ers. We’ll be launching a few other recurring beer related feature pieces in 2018. And we’ve also got roundups from our entire staff, such as our Roundtable Discussion that just need help with compiling on a monthly basis.
Feature reporters should be willing to conduct research by interviewing breweries, follow AP-style, must be willing to pitch stories and adhere to deadlines to their best ability. Familiarity with WordPress, and an ability to take quality photos is a bonus.
While PorchDrinking is not currently able to compensate writers on a consistent basis, writers do have access to press credentials when covering industry-related events, beer samples when writing beer showcases, and one of the best networks of like-minded, passionate beer fans in our PorchDrinking staff.

Long Form Reporters & Storytellers
Built on the premise of telling great stories within the craft beer industry, PorchDrinking aims to go beyond the glass to cover the quirky personalities, interesting trends and unique places that make this industry worth following.
We’re looking for writers who are driven by research-based reporting, who thrive within the long-form format of storytelling and investigative reporting. From breaking down how the Tax Modernization Bill will impact the industry to analyzing acquisition trends from Big Beer, we’re looking for writers who want to share the next big story in beer.
Long Form reporters should be willing to conduct research by interviewing breweries, follow AP-style, must be willing to pitch stories and adhere to deadlines to their best ability. Familiarity with WordPress, and an ability to take quality photos is a bonus.

Copy Editors
Every member of the PorchDrinking team plays a vital role in producing the tremendous content that we create on a daily basis. We’re currently in need of help in the copy editing department to help ensure that we dot our I’s and cross our T’s before stories go to post.
Copy editors will assist in editing between 3-4 stories, one night a week every week, so as to help share the workload. They’ll also assist in scheduling those posts to go live based on our national content calendar
Copy Editors should be adept at editing for AP-style, must be willing to commit to editing one night a week every week and preferably have a basic passion and interest in craft beer. Familiarity with WordPress is strongly preferred.

Digital Sales Specialists and Account Managers
We’re looking for digital sales specialists to help generate sponsorship leads and secure sponsors for PorchDrinking. While we’ve been able to build a tremendous following and accrued incremental growth over the past 5 years, we’re journalists by nature and could use a hand in managing current sponsorship relationships, while working independently to generate leads and advertising.
This role would be commission-based and as such requires someone who is self-motivated. Previous experience with digital ad sales is preferred. This is an opportunity to pioneer the development of PorchDrinking’s ad sales department with plenty of opportunity for growth.
For serious inquiries please contact tristan {@} porchdrinking.com with a resume and cover letter.
