Jonathan Shikes

In episode 72 of the PorchCast, we spoke with Jonathan Shikes, freelance beer journalist, former Managing Editor of The Westword, and author of Denver Beer: A History of Mile High Brewing

We spoke with Jonathan about how he got into writing about beer, what went into the research for creating this comprehensive history of Denver’s craft beer scene, some of his favorite beers and breweries currently in Denver, some of the events he misses most since the onset of the pandemic, setting up an Etsy page, and so much more.

Additionally, if you’re looking to surprise the beer lover in your life with something special this holiday season, be sure to grab them a copy of Jonathan’s book, Denver Beer: A History of Mile High Brewing, he does a tremendous job at tracing Denver’s beer scene back to the early days of Coors, Zang’s, Tivoli and more, following the circumstances that led to Coors’ ascent to becoming a national power, detailing what factors allowed craft beer to blossom and thrive in Denver, as well as painting a landscape for craft beer in the Mile High City today.
