Boys Are From Märzen Podcast | Ruvani de Silva

Boys Are From Märzen Ruvani de Silva
Kindsey Bernhard

In Episode 28 of the “Boys Are From Märzen” podcast, Ruvani de Silva of PorchDrinking joins Kindsey Bernhard.

Ruvani de Silva is a beer writer with bylines on PorchDrinking, Craft Beer Austin, Good Beer Hunting and much more!

Ruvani de Silva was born just outside of London, England and after several trips to the United States, she discovered her love for craft beer. While in London she hosted beer events and gave tours to other craft beer lovers.

In 2017, she moved to Austin, Texas and while discovering the craft beer scene that Austin has to offer, she decided to create her beer blog, “Craft Beer Amethyst, one gal’s guide to craft breweries in and around Austin, Texas.”

Her blog inspired her to start writing about beer full-time. As a South Asian woman, de Silva noticed there was close to no one who looked like her when she was out drinking at breweries or attending beer-related events. During the shutdown and with all the social issues happening around the country, she felt it was important to start writing about diversity and inclusion in the beer world.

de Silva published her first long-form piece in Good Beer Hunting titled “A Rare Gem or a Llama in a Suit? — South Asian Women on Navigating (and Advancing) the Craft Beer Industry” speaking on the issue of the lack of diversity in the beer industry and specifically of people of Asian decent.

She also recently published a book review of Beer and Racism, the first academic book to tackle the subject of racism in beer on PorchDrinking.com.

In this episode, Ruvani de Silva joins me to discuss moving from London to Austin, Texas, starting her own beer blog and how that turned into a full-time writing career, and covering diversity and inclusion in the craft beer industry as a South Asian woman.
