Our Staff Picks the Best Beers from February 2021
As we aim to continue to showcase the incredible beers being produced from independent craft breweries across the country, we thought we’d tap into our regional teams to showcase some of the best beers that have impressed us each and every month.
Bear with us as we’re still growing our regional teams across the country and hope to add full coverage over time, but for now, here are the best beers our teams tried in their respective states for February 2021.
California
Chocolate Moustache Rocky Road | Urban Roots
Sacramento, CA
This version perfectly evokes the iconic ice cream flavor. A bourbon barrel-aged Imperial Stout that comes in at a hefty 14.8% ABV but drinks dangerously smooth. Who needs a pastry stout, when you can go full ice cream.
Colorado
Lickskillet Kölsch | Cellar West Artisan Ales
Lafayette, CO
Soft, pillowy with crisp biscuit-y notes, Lickskillet scratches all the right itches when it comes to a simplistic but traditional-style Kölsch. While Cellar West may have built a reputation of beautifully crafted mixed fermentation beers, their clean program is a formidable contender as well.
Georgia
Slow Jams Baltic Porter w/ Portrait Coffee | Halfway Crooks Beer
Atlanta, GA
One of the best beer makers in the state did it again with this release. Slow Jams is incredibly refreshing due to its dry finish and light body. The coffee aroma and flavor are pronounced and robust, yet soothing and relaxing. Of all the Georgia beers tried this month, this one sits at the top.
Illinois
Cold Pizza | Hop Butcher for the World
Darien, IL
Cold IPAs are becoming a more popular trend around the country and HopButcher’s Cold Pizza is a great example of the style. These IPAs are typically a crossover of a Lager and a West Coast IPA, sometimes being called India Pale Lagers. They’re hoppy yet lower in ABV than a typical West Coast IPA. Expect to see more of this style throughout the summer.
Kentucky
Black Shuck | Mile Wide Beer Co.
Louisville, KY
Mile Wide is known for New England style IPAs, but the Louisville brewery absolutely killed it with this Schwarzbier. This German-style lager is roasty, yet smooth and everything you want in a great Schwarzbier. Bonus, the label on this can is incredible.
Michigan
Black Hearted | Bell’s Brewery
Bell’s does IPAs better than most, and they continue that tradition with their newest Hearted family offering, Black Hearted Black IPA. Roasty and hoppy in all the right ways, sometimes it’s just great to drink a really well made beer.
Montana
Prisoner of Hope | Imagine Nation Brewing
Missoula, MT
Prisoner of Hope was the first fruited double milkshake IPA that Imagine Nation has released, but you’d never know it with the high level of quality and delicious flavors. The passion fruit and guava were present, but subtle enough to let the hops shine through and remind you that it’s a double IPA.
Ohio
Graf Vienna | Noble Beast Brewing Co.
Cleveland, OH
Noble Beast Graf Vienna out of Cleveland, Ohio, balances Old World class with New World innovation. The regal malt character and flinty dryness of the best Vienna Lagers is lightened further by the use of flaked corn in a nod to Mexican amber lagers. It’s flavorful enough to make you stop and notice, but drinkable enough you don’t want to pause for long before the next sip. And the next. And the next.
Utah
Mole Porter | Bewilder Brewing Co.
Salt Lake City, UT
We absolutely enjoyed Bewilder’s Mole Porter is among the top of the list for us. Brewed with cocoa, cinnamon and chipotle peppers this roasted malt beer does a great job balancing the nuances of the ingredients while still remaining approachable. We love the bright cinnamon flavors with the charred fruitiness of the peppers all carefully delivered in a roasted chocolate river.
