Christmas music is pretty hard to escape this time of year. At the grocery store, on the radio, on TV and, frankly, it’s kind of unfair. There are plenty of other winter related tunes that are forced to take a back seat to the merriment and jingle-jangling of this month’s carols. So I decided that I’d present a Christmas-free playlist to highlight 20 of winter’s best tunes, and don’t worry we’ll have a holly jolly playlist for you soon as well. This list includes several December themed songs and concludes with a few that just embody the feeling of winter. Feel free to share your own in the comments section below.

I can tell by my heat blanket, the frost on my windshield, and the seasonal obsession with soups that winter is undeniably upon us. As such a host of winter beers have emerged once again. Whether they are winter warmers, variant IPAs, spiced delights or holiday themed treats, there’s something special about what winter beers bring to the table. I love Christmas, I’m all about the jingle, the jangle, the cookies, the snow (please bring the snow), the churchin’ and of course the beer. But every now and then, hearing Oh Holy Night in the local grocery store a month before Christmas can get a little old. Oh and there are times when trying to drive within a mile of any retail store sitting bumper to bumper can start rubbing the wrong way. And having that one awkward encounter while back home on vacation, with that guy you met once in high school, doesn’t exactly rank at the top of my Facebook interests list, especially when that one encounter involved getting chewing tobacco spat on your new shoes. So hey the holidays aren’t entirely sugar plums and peppermint sticks. So we asked our staff what they dreaded most about the impending holiday season.
Parade of Darks Recap

Every time we are fortunate enough to be invited to a beer event I am reminded of just how innovative, impressive, communal and delicious our beer community can be. Wynkoop’s Parade of Darks was no exception. With over 70 beers on tap ranging from amber to opaque colors, the benefit for MetroCareRing was the perfect way to usher in some fantastic winter warmers.
New Belgium Brewing- Imperial Coffee Chocolate Stout

Lost in the shuffle in the more recent trends of sours, black IPAs, saisons, and old world recipes has been the foregone marriage of chocolate and coffee. Sure a few classic coffee beers are still hanging around shelves, or pop up infrequently from start up microbreweries, such as Renegade’s Sunday Morning. But it seems like those coffee flavored brews have lost some of the hype. New Belgium’s Imperial Coffee Stout definitely restores that swag.

Stone Brewing’s- Lukcy Basartd

Pump the breaks on that spell checker, Stone’s Lukcy Basartd needs no correction. After initially noticing the devious yet iconic demonic image on the front, beer purveyors need flip the bomber over to notice a hefty description about Lukcy Basartd’s origins. Oh and it should be noted that the entire description is also written in that same disjointed misspelled jargon.
What to Watch This Week in College Basketball

Yes, it’s only November but it’s never too early to begin obsessing over college basketball, especially when you’re a Kentucky fan. This week loaded with some truly epic match ups due to the ACC v Big Ten Challenge. And while it’s still quite early in the season many of these games can give you an idea of how much work will be needed for these teams to be prepped for a deep run in March.

There isn’t much that I like about winter. The days get dark earlier, the weather gets colder, up until this year, I wasn’t really into skiing or snowboarding, so my weekend social life was pretty dismal, and it was more often cloudy and dreary especially when I lived in the midwest. The only real positives were college basketball, holidays that revolved around eating, and dark, winter warmer beers.
