What We’re Drinking | February 3, 2017
February 3, 2017 | Dan BortzThe PorchDrinkers didn’t enjoy as many beers as we would have liked this week. Some of us succumbed to seasonal illnesses that made delicious beer turn to ash on our ruined palates. Others of us were in such dire straits that we were forced to turn to “doctors” for relief. Their strange tonics did the trick but, alas, could not be taken with alcohol. A fair few of us were just busy. That happens sometimes, right? The intrepid souls who remain offer you their libations of choice. Come forth and discover What We’re Drinking!

Battle of the Beer Belly | Craft Beer Vs. Fitness
January 30, 2017 | Dan Bortz 3On January 9, I stepped onto a scale for the first time in three months. The number that blinked back at me was a shock: 309.7lbs. I knew it was going to be bad. My size 36 jeans were too small to squeeze into, and I had been feeling pretty run down. For my sake and my family’s, this beer belly has to go.
The path to this sorry state was pretty obvious. As someone who has struggled with my weight for my entire adult life, I knew the signs. It all starts with an event (or series of events), which causes me to lose focus on my diet. This time, the catalyst was the loss of two extended family members in close succession. Once my dietary discipline is compromised, it is usually only a matter of time until workouts fall by the wayside. It all snowballs from there.

What We’re Drinking | January 20, 2017
January 20, 2017 | Dan BortzJanuary is rolling right along, and many of us are fighting the good fight against seasonal affective disorder. I’m not a licensed physician, but I find that the best tool for self-medication is a big, warming (possible barrel-aged) beer. Apparently the PorchDrinkers agree with me, because they enjoyed a few of those this week. Some think that brighter, fruitier libations are a better panacea for the season, but I believe that those people are quacks. This is What We’re Drinking.

PorchDrinking Playlist | My Girlfriend’s Car

My girlfriend Laina and I have been together for more than three years. We live together, have a child together, and love each other a lot. It’s not all rainbows and unicorns, though. Just like in most relationships, disagreements arise. Our fifth-largest bone of contention is control of the car stereo. In my car we listen to brilliant podcasts. My girlfriend’s car stereo is almost always tuned to the country station.

The world of Star Trek: The Next Generation is nearly utopian. It is a post-scarcity world, where war, famine, and disease have been almost completely wiped out on Earth. People are free to pursue any profession they please, without the pressure of making ends meet. This leads to a boom in cultural and technological advancements.

Free Will Brewing Company | The Kragle IPA
January 9, 2017 | Dan BortzABV: 6.6% | IBU: 90
There is a beer that I walk past almost every day. Since it comes from a local brewery, I see it in bottle shops and grocery stores ALL the time. There is no particular reason that I had never tried it. I never read a bad review, heard bad word-of-mouth, or disliked a different beer from the same brewery. I just never reached out and grabbed one. When building a mixed six-pack today, I rectified that error. The last spot in my six-pack carrier was filled with The Kragle IPA from Free Will Brewing Company. Read More

Victory Brewing Company | Vital IPA
January 4, 2017 | Dan BortzABV: 6.5%
As the second American IPA in Victory Brewing Company‘s year-round lineup, Vital IPA had to fight an uphill battle against the existing family favorite. This brew had to differentiate itself from Victory’s better-known Hop Devil IPA and prove that it could stand on its own. By being crisper, more subtle, and lighter-bodied than its predecessor, Vital IPA attracts an audience that Hop Devil may not: lager lovers.

Year in Review | The Best Beers of 2016
December 27, 2016 | Dan BortzThe 2,016th year of the Common Era has come and gone, leaving many high and low points in its wake. Some people may argue that this was one of the worst years in recent memory, but PorchDrinkers don’t like to focus on negatives. We are a mostly optimistic lot, who choose to remember all the positive and happy moments. For many of us, those moments began with a sip of a surprisingly great beer. Together, as a team, we want to to celebrate the best beers of 2016.
