Whether you are mourning the end of summer or celebrating the approaching winter, fall is a great season for beer drinking. What We’re Drinking | October 14
October 14, 2016 | Dan BortzFor many Porchdrinkers, the second week of October has brought hardship and struggle (except for those jerks who were having a blast at GABF). The ingenious inventor of the #Bovapose evacuated her home before a Hurricane. Many struggled to keep their sanity during a bizarre presidential debate. I caught a cold. It’s now time to celebrate our collective coping mechanism and explore What We’re Drinking.
The Weekly Buzz | October 7 – 13

If you like beer events, ghosts, or janitorial work, you have come to the right place. Turn up the polka music, pour yourself a beer, and dive into The Weekly Buzz!

What We’re Drinking | October 7th
October 7, 2016 | Dan BortzOctober is upon us, and that means a lot of different things. Fall seasonals are hitting the beer market, and “leafers” are flocking to New England to gawk at autumn foliage. For many in the Southeast, it means evacuating their homes in anticipation of a hurricane. This week in particular will also see a tsunami of brewers and beer enthusiasts slamming into Denver for GABF. To me, it mostly means jealousy because I’m stuck at home. It’s time for us to live vicariously through the Porchdrinking.com staff and find out What We’re Drinking!
The Weekly Buzz | September 30 – October 6
October 7, 2016 | Dan BortzDid you know that there is some kind of beer festival in Denver this weekend? Just kidding! We all know that GABF is coming up fast, and Twitter has been … Read More
What We’re Drinking | September 30th
September 30, 2016 | Dan BortzAfter looking through this week’s submissions, I’ve only been able to draw two definitive conclusions. First, Southeast Region Editor Johnathan Pylant drank a lot of beer this week, and, second, he’s not great at the #BovaPose. I mean he’s really not great at it, but that’s enough about his shortcomings. The rest of the staff delivered some real gems. Pull on your 1930s-style bathing suit, don your swim cap, and get ready to dive in like Scrooge McDuck. This is What We’re Drinking.

A Brief History of Oktoberfest
September 28, 2016 | Dan BortzReaders, please see the end of the article for PD’s sources on this rundown of an awesome, beloved tradition.
Who doesn’t love a royal wedding? It wasn’t all that long ago that millions of people around the world tuned in to see William and Kate get hitched. The infatuation with royal nuptials goes back beyond recorded history, and the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, later to become King Ludwig I, to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen was no exception. From this wedding celebration grew an annual festival, which would evolve into the largest folk festival in the world: Oktoberfest.

September 26, 2016 | Dan BortzIt’s that time of year again! Something about fall makes it perfect for drinking an amber lager and listening to beerhall music among several thousand of your closest friends. For many, making the trip to Munich for Oktoberfest may be a financial or logistical impossibility, but there is still hope! The Oktoberfest at the Reading Liederkranz in Reading, Pennsylvania, aims to recreate those traditions and warm, cozy feelings of Gemütlichket right here on the East Coast.

What We’re Drinking | September 16th, 2016
September 16, 2016 | Dan BortzSeptember brings us another week in transition. Some Porchdrinkers are grasping on to the last days of summer and others are diving head-first into autumn. We even had one intrepid soul who not-so-successfully tried to emulate the Queen of Beer Selfies by replicating the #Bovapose (Trademark pending… probably). No matter what is in our glass, you can be certain that our writers are having a ton of malty, hoppy fun. Here’s What We’re Drinking. Read More

Without further ado, here is this week’s Weekly Buzz!
Brewery Showcase | Stickman Brews
August 25, 2016 | Dan BortzAmerican craft beer is like the history of the country itself. As a nation of immigrants, our brewers borrow their techniques from many different traditions, tweaking, combining and refining them into something uniquely american. Now, try imagining that we had a centuries old heritage of farmhouse brewing like Belgium. What impact would that have had on modern craft beer? Stickman Brews‘ mission is to find an answer that very question.

Inside the Tank | Stickman Brews’ Ethan Buckman
August 22, 2016 | Dan BortzHow would craft beer have evolved in America if we had a centuries-old farmhouse brewing tradition like Belgium? Head brewer and co-founder of Stickman Brews, Ethan Buckman, focuses his creativity on creating beers that could have existed in this alternate brewing history. He brews hop-forward American-style ales, which he then ferments farmhouse-style with different strains of Brettanomyces and wild yeasts in open-top fermenters. The resulting beers blur style guidelines in exciting new ways. Ethan doesn’t like to assign styles to his brews because he doesn’t feel there are any regularly used styles that accurately describe what he is trying to create.
He is probably right.
Brewery Showcase | Weyerbacher Brewing Company
August 12, 2016 | Dan BortzBeneath the gaze of the iconic court jester, you’ll find a set of glass doors, which bear the number “21.” That’s 21 years of defying expectations. 252 months of eschewing style guidelines. 7,665 days (give or take a few leap days) of perfecting their craft. Read More
