Awesomsauce | Baby Goats

I have a confession: when I’m having a bad day, I turn turn to the internet to make me feel better.  I have several go-to strategies, depending on what’s ailing me: WhiteWhine.com is for those days when the little things in life are going wrong; hangnail, bad day at work, no Chai Lattes at Starbucks…basically any day when my complaints could show up on the website to be (righfully) mocked for the first world problems that they are.  If I need a little extra cheering up, I turn to PeopleofWalmart.com or AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com, so I can feel better about the fact that my mom gave me crimped hair for my 4th grade class photo, and then moved past it (read: didn’t continue to subject me to the same choices to this very day.)  But when I’m having one of those days when even those two won’t make me smile, and when puppy videos just won’t cut it, I resort to YouTube…to baby goat videos. They can bring a smile to your face when almost nothing else can.   Read More

We all have those TV shows that we know in our heart of hearts were brilliant: The Wonder Years, Freaks and Geeks, Firefly, The Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa (you know the standard list that everyone agrees on.) For the most part, we collectively determine after they’re cancelled that these shows were the greatest thing since The Wire—the TV show equivalent of the no-one-says-anything-bad-about-you-at-your-funeral effect. When I was little and we’d make the trek down south to Florida or South Carolina for vacation, my mom would always stop by our local AAA Office first and get a TripTik. These were basically personalized, highlighted maps of your route showing you where to go, local traffic information along the way (always marked on the paper map with a little rubber stamp in the shape of a traffic cone), the locations of gas stations, etc. Now, of course, that service has moved online, but only if you’re a dues-paying AAA member.

It should come as no surprise to some of you that I’m a bit of an Anglophile – I will own a MINI Cooper some day when I’m grown up and can afford it; I woke up at 4:30 in the morning to watch the royal wedding live; and (I swear I’m not making this up) I own a coffee cup celebrating Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. It follows, of course, that I love me some British television. And, when I realized that Time Warner carried BBC America, it was all over. Between good ole’ channel 225 and the staggering array of BBC content available on Netflix, it truly is surprising that I venture out of my house to make a living. The main reason being is the Beeb has been putting out some seriously superior content lately. If you’ve never watched some of these shows, now is the time to start.
