Cult Beers Part 1
February 27, 2014 | Tristan ChanIt’s the time of season when the masses begin waiting for hours to pay an exorbitant amount of money for a single glass or bottle of cult beers. But trust me, it’s worth it. Today we start a two part series on beers with a cult following. These beers don’t necessarily have to be extremely rare, though most are, the only qualifier is that they have transcended just being a great beer, but more so, one that people go crazy about.

YOLO Brewing Company
January 23, 2014 | Tristan Chan 1BeerStreetJournal recently reported the upcoming opening of YOLO Brewing Company slated for a spring launch Sacramento, CA. Based on all accounts from the brewery’s Facebook page (it’s only appropriate to cite a brewery’s social media page if it’s inspired by a hashtag), this is a real brewery that is inspired by the social media movement. This excerpt was taken from said Facebook page:
2014 Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines Recap
January 20, 2014 | Tristan ChanAll photos provided by Will Dozier and Lynn Thayer
I distinctly remembered leaving last year’s Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines Festival feeling like I had done something illegal, as if I had snuck into first class mid-flight, or was mistaken for a movie star and gotten into a private party. See when I left VBBB last year I had just encountered one of the greatest collections of rare/phenomenal beers assembled in one place.

PorchDrinking Playlist: The Hangover Playlist
January 14, 2014 | Tristan ChanWe’ve all had those mornings where we’ve crawled out of bed cursing the day we allow another drop of alcohol to poison our lips. Those days are usually wrought with lying around in bed, double digit cups of coffee, Paula Dean levels of lard laden food and a mix of chill but purposeful tunes to inspire and wrench us out of the drudgery. Here is a hangover playlist of beautifully laid back songs for just those occasions. So kick back, take a deep breath and begin to recoup from New Years, Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines or just that random bender you had this past weekend
How Is That Legal?! Legalizing Marijuana
January 13, 2014 | Tristan Chan 3*Now that purchasing marijuana has officially become legalized in Colorado we thought we’d re-visit one of our favorite posts from last year with a few extra additions. With all the hubbub about legalizing marijuana we looked at a few other things that are legal that probably shouldn’t be.*
Please let it be known that we intentionally tend to avoid discussing politics on PorchDrinking unless it involves parody, humor or, more commonly, drinking games. And this election season has certainly provided many such opportunities.

Renegade Brewing Company | Black Gold Peanut Butter Cup Milk Stout
December 31, 2013 | Tristan Chan 1Renegade Brewing Company
925 W 9th Ave, Denver, CO
ABV: 11%
“It tastes so good once it hits your mouth”- Frank “the tank” Picard. At least thats what I imagine Will Ferrell’s character rambunctiously proclaiming after one taste of Renegade Brewing Company’s Black Gold. Not to bury the lead, Renegade Brewing Company Black Gold is a Peanut Butter Cup Milkstout that tastes every bit as sweet tooth satisfying as it’s namesake lets on. While the chocolate flavors play second fiddle when compared to the dominant presence of the peanut butter, the symphonic conjuring of childhood candied flavors, are undeniable.
12 Beers of Christmas | Day 11 Prairie Artisan Ales The Beer That Saved Christmas
December 24, 2013 | Tristan ChanPrairie Artisan Ales The Beer That Saved Christmas
ABV: 10%
Something special is happening in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Prairie Artisan Ales, which was opened by brothers Chase and Colin Healy in 2012, has been quietly making some of the best farmhouse and barrel-aged beers in the country. Their mission, as stated on their Facebook page, “Is to create beers that go beyond the middle of the country to reach people around the world.” And they’ve clearly succeeded.

PorchDrinking Playlist: Snow Songs
December 17, 2013 | Tristan ChanAs children, we’d pull out all the stops when it came to the potential of a snow day. I often think back to countless nights I spent donning pj’s that had been flipped inside out huddled around the window scoping out those first flakes as they caught the glimmer of the street light outside of my house. Because seeing those flittering white flecks meant the sure possibility that we’d be granted a much needed reprieve from school the next day. What followed often resulted in a tribal dance channeled directly to the snow gods to bring the proverbial frozen rain. This playlist of snow songs is devoted to the inner child in us in hopes of a safe and snowy December.
12 Beers of Christmas | Day 1: Upslope’s Christmas Ale
December 14, 2013 | Tristan Chan 2You know the feeling you get while barreling down the stairs on Christmas morning as a kid, and you find a twinkling tree replete with packages, that have been neatly wrapped, waiting to be clawed apart? Well that’s kind of the feeling you might get when you see the red shimmering packaging for Upslope’s debut Christmas Ale.
