PorchDrinking Playlist: Underrated Bands
July 23, 2013 | Tristan ChanFinding great music can be daunting. But even more daunting is for great artists to break through the clutter and really find traction on the airwaves. While sifting through my musical libraries for this list of underrated bands, I realized that I first started listening to most of these in college. I’m not sure if that means I had awesome musical tastes in college or awful musical tastes, I choose to believe the prior.
The Lone Bellow
July 16, 2013 | Tristan ChanThere’s always something magical about seeing a band play Red Rocks Amphitheater, whether it’s for the first time or the 237th (it seems like Blue’s Traveller has played RR every July 4th since the signing of the Declaration of Independence). The Lone Bellow aren’t exactly strangers to arguably the greatest music venue in the nation. In fact, it was only two months ago that they opened during a screening of Film on the Rocks, but that wouldn’t dampen (figuratively) their excitement, energy or sound Saturday night when they performed with the likes of Blind Pilot and Brandi Carlile.
The Oh Hello’s
July 1, 2013 | Tristan ChanI don’t usually deal in sweeping proclamations, ok maybe I do, but if there is one band to see in person this summer, it’s the Oh Hello’s. The brother and sister duo of Tyler and Maggie Heath out of San Marcos, Texas form the core of an 11 person ensemble, that produces a robust, soulful, indie folk sound, reminiscent of Of Monsters and Men, The Head and the Heart and the Lumineers.

Factotum Brewhouse Kickstarter
June 24, 2013 | Tristan ChanHomebrewing has been an American staple dating back as far as our founding fathers. Thomas Jefferson homebrewed, Barack Obama’s administration recently “homebrewed”, and many of you probably do too. But imagine the opportunity to brew on a commercial system and actually sell YOUR own beer to the masses, all without the hassle of opening up your own brewery. Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist Songs for Every Month
June 18, 2013 | Tristan ChanAdmittedly this playlist has absolutely nothing to do with Father’s Day or summer or anything for that matter. But instead of trying to make some far fetched correlation to how the summer months move too quickly and how the seasons change blah blah blah, just enjoy a playlist with songs for every month. And yes, March’s song is by the Ides of March… deal with it.

PD Playlist: What You Should Be Listening To – Summer 2013
June 11, 2013 | Tristan Chan 1I tend to approach music as I do with beer in that I love dissecting, collecting and consuming it by the loads. Luckily when I awake hazily from that dual mass consumption my musical journey affords me the perfect chill tunes to help nurse my hangover. But my approach to music is also similar to that with beer in that I don’t consider myself a snob but rather a fan who loves sharing the joys of discovering great new finds. So please don’t misconstrue this the title of this playlist as snobbery. However here’s what you should be listening to during the summer of 2013.

This Is Not Magic Hat #thisisnotmagichat
May 23, 2013 | Tristan Chan 3We found out earlier this week that there has been quite a bit of confusion over the interpretation of some of Magic Hat Brewing Company’s products. Willie’s in Lexington, Kentucky decided to don their good samaritain cap and ensure that there were no further confusions over product branding. Thanks to Facebook user Collin Wallace for posting this picture.

Editorial: Magic Hat Brewing Company Versus West Sixth Brewery
May 22, 2013 | Tristan Chan 6I originally intended to write an editorial in response to Slate’s post earlier this week about how hoppy beers are ruining craft beer. They made some valid observations but on the whole their argument boils down to taste. Hops aren’t ruining craft beer, beer is ruining craft beer, namely people in the industry who don’t abide by beer culture.
PorchDrinking Playlist: Summer Road Trip Playlist
May 21, 2013 | Tristan ChanNothing is better than rolling down the back roads with the windows rolled down discovering new locations and taking in the sights and sounds of nature while enjoying the ride to your destination. This summer road trip playlist goes out to those relaxed trips. Hopefully this will serve as the perfect soundtrack to your next adventure on the open road.
Texas Beer Bills Close to a Reality
May 21, 2013 | Tristan Chan 2The Texas House passed a set of five beer laws yesterday and now sit for review by Governor Rick Perry. The Governor has until June 16th to decide on the bills but assuming they pass, beer distribution in Texas is about to undergo some major changes.
