Beer Showcases
PD’s own dissect beer. Leave the pretentiousness on the curb.
Frankenmuth Brewery | Twisted Helles
June 30, 2014 | Lindsay KrumelABV: 5.5%
Summers in Michigan were a staple of my childhood, from celebrating my first birthday at Higgins Lake to weeklong vacations in Harbor Springs. We took day trips to Petoskey, Charlevoix and Big Bear Dunes, and we usually made a pit stop in Frankenmuth, Michigan’s Little Bavaria. It should come as no surprise then that today’s showcase from Frankenmuth Brewery is Twisted Helles Summer Lager. Read More
Dry Dock Brewery | Aloha Biz Hawaiian Porter
June 27, 2014 | Kara Loo and Kelissa HieberABV 5.7%
We left the Denver city confines last night to get brewing supplies at our favorite store, The Brew Hut, in Aurora, Colorado. After purchasing the items on our list (and then some), we ducked into Dry Dock Brewery for a beer. The Brew Hut is literally fused to Dry Dock’s brewhouse, making after-shopping samples close to impossible to resist. Tricky bastards.
Lantern Brewing | Tripel
June 26, 2014 | Brad HartsockLantern Brewing | Tripel – 8% ABV
If you are even casual fan of Belgian style beers, especially the tripel, you know they can get pretty out there with high ABV, bacteria treated sours, complicated aging processes, and unusual ingredients. They can become so complex that it’s easy to forget why people loved them to start with: they are refreshing, clean-flavored, balanced beers that happen to punch above their weight class in terms of alcohol content. West Sixth Brewing | West Sixth IPA
June 25, 2014 | Shelley Cooper 1Think back to the first time you tasted a true craft beer. Better yet, think back to the first time you tasted a local craft beer: one that was created in your state, your town or perhaps even in your neighborhood. Did it have a little extra “flair” to it? Read More
Upland Brewing Company | Peach Lambic
June 24, 2014 | Andrew JohnsonAccording to the Presidents of the United States of America, peaches come from a can, but Upland Brewing Company in Bloomington, Indiana is proving that peaches can come in a bottle too. Upland is famous throughout the US for their fruited lambic style beers. Lambics are a style from Belgium that is normally a low abv beer that is incredibly tart. The fruit is used to cut the tartness and add a little bit of sweet fruit flavor. Upland’s lambics have become so popular that they’ve had to implement a lottery system. You have to enter to win the opportunity to buy their beer. They just released a peach and persimmon version. Read More
Devils Backbone Brewing Company | The Vienna Lager
June 23, 2014 | Carly Mento 2ABV: 4.9%
IBU: 18
There are few things I love more than the serendipity of walking through the doors to a New York City saloon, and almost instantly, falling in love with a lager. This past month, not only did I find love, but it was a winner in the most literal sense.
Milwaukee Brewing Company Hop Freak Double IPA
June 20, 2014 | Brady AkersABV: 8.70%
IBU: 80
Writer Ritu Ghatorey said “Sometimes You Need To Look At Life From A Different Perspective.” And she was right, which is why I am going to do two reviews in one. I was able to try Hop Freak in 2 different formats in 2 different settings. My first experience was a draft of Hop Freak on the patio deck at Milwaukee Brewing Company overlooking the Milwaukee River on a hot Milwaukee summer day. My other experience with Hop Freak was out of a can on a cold, rainy Denver night. Both experiences were delicious, but very different.
Southern Tier | Farmer’s Tan
June 19, 2014 | Emily MollineauxABV: 4.6 %
Now that Summer is fully upon us, I thought it would be nice to showcase one of my favorite summer seasonal beers! Southern Tier, a brewery out of Lakewood, New York, has dialed in on a phenom in their Session India Pale Ale named “Farmer’s Tan.” If the name alone isn’t reason enough to give it a try, just wait until you taste it. Anchorage Brewing & Jolly Pumpkin | Calabaza Boreal
June 16, 2014 | Bob McGurganAnchorage Brewing & Jolly Pumpkin | Calabaza Boreal
ABV: 7.0%
In honor of our collaboration roundtable this week, I figured I’d showcase a recent collaboration from a pair of breweries that I love to death. Calabaza Boreal is a team-brew by Anchorage Brewing and Jolly Pumpkin, and I’ll spoil the article early to reveal that this beer is delicious. If you like sours, you were probably excited when you read the title.
Indigo Imp Brewery | Summer Pale Ale
June 13, 2014 | Kevin RisnerABV: 6.4%
Summer will be here in less than two weeks. My palate begins to water (as do most of my pores) when I think about the more humid, sunnier climes that have begun to take shape as May has ended and June has begun. As I dust off the porch seats and steel myself for the incessant weed trimmers humming next door and kids screaming across the street, I anticipate with great relish the moments sitting down with some friends and cooling off with a nice, bright, somewhat hoppy ale. Elysian Brewery | Savant IPA
June 12, 2014 | Brady AkersABV: 6.30%
IBU: 66
I am not a scientist and I rarely claim to be, but there has to be research available that proves that people love monkeys. I was at Hugo’s, my local beer store, trying to judge a beer by its label and make the impossible decision: Elysian’s DayGlow IPA with a tiger shooting rainbow lasers out of its eyes or Elysian’s Savant IPA with a monkey in glasses painting a picture. My past experience with Elysian has revolved around their incredible fall pumpkin beers, which made me appoint Elysian my beer of the evening for a rainy Wednesday night.
21st Amendment | Lower De Boom
June 11, 2014 | Andrew SharpABV: 11.5%
IBU: 92
I normally do not drink things out of small cans. The only things that come in small cans are energy drinks and pineapple juice. I was, however intrigued when I spotted a four pack of 21st Amendment’s “Lower De Boom” Barleywine on an endcap. It was on sale – the deal was sealed. Read More

Stem Ciders | Banjo Cider
May 30, 2014 | Laura GrahamPost-Memorial Day my taste buds begin to boycott woody, smoky porters better suited for cold, cloudy days of yore and turn to crisp, refreshing flavors that pair nicely with patios and sunburns. I’m from an Irish/Scottish family (see: sunburns) whose fridges and cellars were always stocked with a variety of ciders. Countless times growing up, I sat with my family while they told stories and sang songs – stealing sips of their ciders, trying not to get caught.
