Brewery Ommegang | Abbey Ale Dubbel Ale
April 24, 2015 | Danny KingABV: 8.2%
My mother always says “Presentation is Everything”. Oftentimes, when enjoying an Ommegang beer, I assume she stole her personal little motto from these Cooperstown brewers. From factors as important as taste and quality to such seemingly inconsequential items as font choices, every inch of the Ommegang experience, from their early days to current day, is a masterclass in craft brewing.

We still have a long, expensive, and amusing campaign season ahead of us before the 2016 presidential election, so I thought it would be wise to make sure we’re all aware of which beers pair best with each candidate’s shenanigans. I think you’ll find that each of the beers in this list will have its own time and place to be enjoyed in the next 18 months as the as the pool of candidates grows, fights with itself, and ultimately shrinks to a few shrewd (or lucky) frontrunners. So read on for the only source of political news you’ll need today, the Ultimate 6er for 2016 Presidential Contenders. Read More

10 Creative Ways Craft Beer Is Improving Its Environmental Friendliness
April 22, 2015 | Brian Phipps
Happy Earth Day! Founded in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, the movement has spread internationally. Earth Day was first used as a message to advocate protecting the environment as 20 million people participated in rallies that resulted in the formation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Today, Earth Day conducts international initiatives like in 2012 when one million trees were planted across the planet. In addition advocation for the plant mostly focuses on climate change. Everyone is encouraged today to do something nice for the Earth and make a difference. Read More

In short, Brouwerij Rodenbach‘s Vintage Oak Aged ale could, easily, be described as a champagne among beers! The long way round takes about 200 years, which is about how long Brouwerij (Brewery) Rodenbach has been brewing. How exciting is that? Read More
SweetWater 420 Fest | 7 Reasons Rain Couldn’t Stop This Party
April 21, 2015 | Jess BakerThe SweetWater 420 Fest rolled into downtown Atlanta April 17-19 — and so did big time thunderstorms.
It had rained in Atlanta every single day of the week leading up to the festival’s kick-off Friday. The weather left Centennial Olympic Park, home of the 1996 Summer Olympics, a virtual mud pit. Even the walkways were a slip ’n slide of muck.
Uinta Brewing Company | Yard Sale Winter Lager
April 21, 2015 | Colin ClancyThe April snowstorm that blanketed the Salt Lake Valley last week is the biggest I’ve seen since moving here in September. Admittedly it hasn’t been a great winter. Luckily I was able to take advantage of my employer’s powder morning policy, getting up to Brighton Resort for first chair and making a few last-week-of-the-season powder turns. The hardest part is leaving to head to work while the late-comers are still arriving to make their own tracks in my snow.

Railhouse Brewery | Mastiff Oatmeal Stout
April 20, 2015 | Christopher HilliardABV: 6.5% | IBU: 33
Before we find ourselves too far removed from winter, I wanted to share a stout I discovered recently, Mastiff Oatmeal Stout from Railhouse Brewery. Railhouse is veteran-owned (hence the patriotic bottle cap) and -operated in Aberdeen, North Carolina. Aberdeen, like many towns home to NC brewers, is relatively small and out of the way. Located a couple hours south and west of Raleigh and an hour due west of Fort Bragg, you might never hear of it were it not for the beer. Read More
Legal Issues Force Mercenary Brewery to Change Name
April 17, 2015 | Mike ZollerFor over seven years Adam Cieslak and Ari Megalis home-brewed beer with the hopes of one day opening Mercenary Brewery in Chicago. In October 2014, the childhood friends started using the name Mercenary commercially for the first time as they began bottling and kegging their beers for distribution. But on April 16, the brewery had to change its name from Mercenary to Maplewood.
Beer Cocktails | April Red Beer
April 16, 2015 | Natalie MigliariniToday I am sharing a recipe that will help you add a zest to your typical red beer or Bloody Mary. This recipe is super simple and can also act as a major hangover reliever. This is also a fun and easy cocktail to serve at brunch or even for lunch. I had this cocktail today for lunch and it was quite addition to my detox salad. This Red Ale comes from Silver City Brewery out of Silverdale, Washington and has been up and running since 1996. The Red Ale is a very approachable and versatility beer that compliments most food items and is the prefect candidate for a beer cocktail.
Festival Recap | Big Texas Beer Fest 2015
April 16, 2015 | Kezia IbarraLast weekend, the fourth annual Dallas-born Big Texas Beer Fest took place in Fair Park. Thousands headed over to the Automobile Building in search of craft beers and great food paired with live music from local bands. This year more than 500 beers (38 barrel-aged) were announced from 120 representing local, national and international breweries.
The Bronx Brewery | Bronx Pale Ale
April 16, 2015 | Danny KingThe last two weekends I’ve been spending some time in the Bronx, the last borough (that matters – sorry Staten Island) left to be aggressively gentrified within an inch of its life. Their zoo is legit and has real zoo animals, not like the sideshow attractions that pass for the Prospect Park and Central Park Zoos. Their Little Italy has authentic groceries and restaurants, as opposed to 60 dollar all you can eat/drink buffets whose one authentic Italian quality is their eerily accurate ability to re-enact Roman vomitoriums. There aren’t any American Apparels and things are named practically instead of after eye-catching phrases that have been market tested to death. Basically, the Bronx still bears the grit of the city and the community-minded neighborhood vibe that all us transplants who came to New York thought we were getting instead of sanitized, post collegiate money drains we’ve inadvertently created by moving here.
Craft Beer Welcomes You to South Carolina
April 15, 2015 | Johnathan Pylant
Admittedly, the Palmetto State has not always been the first place to come to mind when someone asked me where to find superb craft breweries. Prior to living here, I might have listed off California, Colorado, Oregon and New England. This is partly because the east coast, especially the southeast, has been slow to embrace the industry’s explosive expansion. I’ve lived in South Carolina since 2007, a time when there were merely 5 breweries in the state. Today, there are 21 breweries and 12 brewpubs. The state has really brought home the idea of being fashionably late. Approximately 57% of the current breweries were established in or after 2013. That is a huge explosion that has resulted in amazing beer and a sprawling community of craft brewers and enthusiasts.
Event Recap | Saison & Farmhouse Invitational 2015
April 15, 2015 | Chris DayI don’t know about you, but after a winter full of stout months, big beer fests, and holiday ales, my palate is usually begging for a break. I’m craving something a little drier, more effervescent, and better suited to a warm spring day. In other words, it’s saison time! Read More
