Weekly Growler Fill | National Beer News Roundup
February 9, 2015 | Chelsea MitchellThis week I have some very important craft beer news that you must read. First, the law makers are a movin’ and a shakin’ to make some changes for the craft beer community in Wisconsin and Alabama. But guess what? The breweries are a movin’ and a sprayin’. Yes, you read that correctly. Urban Chestnut is ‘moving’ by expanding distribution to Chicago and Cantillon is literally spraying the insides of it’s new facility with beer. Get the details to these stories and more in this edition of the Weekly Growler Fill.
Event Recap | New Belgium Lost In The Woods
February 9, 2015 | Brady Akers 1I’ve got a golden ticket. Being able to attend New Belgium’s Lost in the Woods event draws similarities to that of a beer-centric Willy Wonka plot. With one of the most respected sour programs in the country, beers like La Folie, Le Terroir and TransAtlantique Kriek are some of the most sought-after sours in the country and their creators Lauren Salazar, Eric Salazar and Peter Bouckaert are industry rock stars. New Belgium does a tremendous job of taking fans behind the scenes with their brewery tours, but getting a chance to venture into the depths of their foeder farm is a special opportunity.
Bohemian Brewery | Czech Pilsner
February 9, 2015 | Colin ClancyABV: 4.0%
Among the numerous reasons that I enjoy writing for PorchDrinking.com is that it allows me to drink beer at the laundromat. Now, I’d typically shy away from popping the top on some suds in a place such as this, and surely there’s some legality issues at play (or at least some questions of decorum, especially here in Salt Lake City). But I feel that writing for a reputable, national beer blog like PD brings to my drinking some professional perspective, thus justifying this laundromat imbibing; I have a beer showcase due tomorrow, and I’ve been going commando, as they say, for damned near a week now.
For this public showcase I went with a beer from Midvale, Utah’s Bohemian Brewery. I chose their 1842 Czech Pilsner. Why? Because I enjoy this light-bodied golden lager? Yes. But also because the silver can, in the right light, looks like it could be full of off-brand soda, or as we call it in my home state of Michigan, pop. Read More
The Rare Barrel | Forces Unseen
February 6, 2015 | Cleo Tobbi
Sour beers have quickly become an obsession for beer drinkers around the world. This is nothing new. American breweries have taken to mimicking styles that range from old ales to long-practiced lambics and more. As of late, the US has been bestowed with many breweries whose sole purpose is to bring the world (or those who can access it) that puckering elixir known commonly as sour beer.
Enter, The Rare Barrel and their exclusively barrel-aged sour brewery. Other than having one of the best names in the industry (I mean, come on, “rare” is right in the title), The Rare Barrel also produces some top-quality sour beers. Ranging from barrel-aged Goses to Berliner Weisses, to everything in between, The Rare Barrel rolls the dice with each batch of this lively drink, especially one of their latest brews: Forces Unseen. Beer Cocktails | Winter Tattoo Cocktail
February 5, 2015 | Natalie Migliarini 1Today I am sharing a beer cocktail recipe that contains bourbon and beer! What could be a better combination? I love making beer cocktails because they are so fun and refreshing. I used golden ale from Bad Tattoo Brewing out of Penticton, British Columbia. The golden ale is smooth and made with old world hops and crystal malts. The lightness of beer makes it perfect for a beer cocktail because it does not overwhelm the flavor of the cocktail. It is called ACP, which stands for Achieve, Conquer, and Persevere. The recipe is adapted from the cocktail Mister Three Step By John McCarthy, from Cedar Local + Bathtub Gin in NYC. I have made a bunch on beer cocktails in the past but have never used Campari. Let me tell you that the Campari and bourbon in this recipe is the perfect combination. Have you ever tried any Campari beer cocktails?

Ellis Island Casino & Brewery
February 4, 2015 | Andrew SharpLas Vegas is synonymous with excess. Strolling around the Bellagio or trendy new Cosmopolitan, it is all too common to see a Chinese businessman with stacks of strangely colored chips at the baccarat table, or a hip-hop star and their entourage with an endless stream of overpriced bottles of vodka and champagne in the VIP area of an equally overpriced club. This is one of the attractions of Vegas. This and the scantily clad waitstaff, ready to bring a seemingly never-ending supply of drinks for as long as you’re willing to keep gambling.

Braven Brewing Co. | Roll Out Party
February 3, 2015 | Carly MentoBuilding your own brewing company during the few hours you are not earning an income is no easy feat, but for co-founders Marshall & Eric, the support of friends and family, vendor connections, and a goal-breaking Kickstarter campaign has made the experience more rewarding than rigorous. Our own Stacey Goers highlighted her interview with the two friends on how it all came together in the latter half of 2013. Now, a little over a year to date, Braven Brewing’s “dream” is transforming into “reality” as kegs make their way into Brooklyn bars and craft beer lovers’ hearts.

The logo is incredible, isn’t it? Half raven. Half buck. Braven.
Marshall Thompson, co-founder of Braven Brewing Company, wanted to merge elements of each parent’s family crest in order to dually identify with his roots. That he did, and can prove it by his tattoo. When co-founder Eric Feldman approached him on the topic of starting their own brewery, the two found little debate in bringing forth this cross-breed animal to represent the partnership.

Weekly Growler Fill | National Beer News Roundup
February 2, 2015 | Chelsea MitchellThis week brings some super duper exciting news. Well, mainly one story in particular: Firestone Walker is coming out with cans just in time for sunny Spring days at the park! Other stories this week are more of the ‘feel-good’ nature: Stone Brewing donated a bunch of money to charity in 2014, there is yet again a new women’s beer mile record, and the CIDER Act is being reintroduced to Congress. Get the details of these headlines and more in this edition of the Weekly Growler Fill.

Event Recap | New Belgium Slow Ride Weekend at Winter Park
February 2, 2015 | Brady AkersShowing up at Union Station early on Saturday morning felt a little bit like the first day of camp. I was really excited about what was in store, but still a little nervous. My nerves were immediately calmed when I checked in with Justin Patti, who gave me a much needed hi five and a smile. Before we hopped on the train, I fueled up on a delicious Illegal Pete’s breakfast burrito and enough coffee to drown a child.
Mother Earth | Dark Cloud
February 2, 2015 | Christopher HilliardABV: 5.1% | IBU: Low
Out in rural, eastern North Carolina, there lies a town called Kinston. Kinston boasts as the home of at least a couple of highly notable entities: Mother Earth Brewery and the Chef and the Farmer, a fine-dining restaurant with its own show on PBS. Since we’re all about the beer here at PorchDrinking.com, I’ll leave the food commentary for another day, but I thought I should mention it in case any of you find yourself in the area. Read More

Kettle Green Brewing Co | Holy Grale Hemp Ale
January 30, 2015 | Lindsay Snyder
When I moved to Australia earlier this month, people warned me that the Land Down Under lags behind the rest of the world in almost every way, including beer. I was afraid I would reach for a pint after my long voyage and find only vintage old style lagers prevailing. Instead, what I’ve found is actually a budding craft beer culture that hasn’t yet gone hop-crazy and therefore fits my palate perfectly. Read More
