A variety of food trucks park outside River North during brewery hours. Catch them on Wednesdays through Sundays in Summer 2014.
It was the night after a long day, and my girlfriend Kelissa and I walked the halls of our new apartment building in search of beer. “Let’s try this door,” I suggested, veering right. We emerged from the musty stairwell, and lo and behold, River North Brewery stood shining in Belgian golden glory. We ambled across the street and went inside. Read More

How excited am I that I get to be the first one to review this fantastic new offering from Coney Island Brewing, their Seas the Day India Pale Lager? So excited. I like everything I have had from these guys; the Coney Island Lager is classic; the Mermaid Pilsner is super fun; and the Tunnel of Love Watermelon Wheat is no slouch either. But those are for other showcases. Today we are here to talk about the Seas the Day IPL. Read More

Madison Craft Beer Week | Keeping Sconnies Slightly Drunker Than Usual

With new breweries sprouting up on every corner and constantly rotating taps at every bar, living in Madison leaves very little to be desired for the hop-seeker. Cigar City Brewing | Jai Alai
May 19, 2014 | Emily MollineauxABV: 7.5% | IBU: 70
Last summer I was lucky enough to check out Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Florida. It was by far one of the best brewery tours I have ever been to, and their beer is phenomenal. Since it’s a small brewery, they only sell their beer around Tampa. Fortunately, I have an amazing friend who came up to visit me in Columbus, bringing with him a 6 back of Cigar City Brewing’s Jai Alai Indian Pale Ale that he bought while in Tampa. I could not have been more excited to try this beer again, and showcase it here. Read More

Ultimate 6er | Silicon Valley
May 14, 2014 | Andrew SharpHBO’s Silicon Valley has been another success for creator Mike Judge. Judge has had a successful career on both the big and small screens as creator of hits such as Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill, and Office Space. Silicon Valley is no exception. Judge’s new creation is funny, smart, but most of all, genuine. While the storyline is slightly contrived and hyperbolic, the humor and characters aren’t. Silicon Valley captures the realities and challenges of a start-up – all the hard work, ruthless competition, and ample shenanigans. Read More

Sierra Nevada – Blindfold Black IPA
May 13, 2014 | Niel StenderABV: 6.8%
IBU: 70
This past winter was a long one but thanks to the never ending options for stouts, porters and other dark delicious brews, I survived just fine. In fact, it could be said I went a bit overboard. Peanut butter milk stout? Check. Smoked vanilla porter? Check. Why drink a regular dark beer when you can add all sorts of fun ingredients to see what tastes come together? Frankly, I could not imagine not drinking the deep dark beers I’d come to love over this past winter, all year long. Enter Blindfold Black IPA.
Former Future Brewing Company | Denver, CO

I was a fan of Former Future Brewing Company months before they served their first beer to the public. In fact, it all began with the latest trend of bringing it to the people through crowd funding as a means to launch the brewery. That campaign launched on Kickstarter and I knew I become a Former Future Brewing Company fanatic.
While brewing beer in Colorado is nothing new, Former Future takes a different approach from most breweries. Starting with its origins, of using the power of the internet to raise the money needed to make their hop-soaked dreams come true. Husband and wife duo James and Sarah Howat take old-fashioned beer recipes and throw in a modern twist to create exceptional beers that are familiar, but different. Read More

Brauhaus Hartmannsdorf GmbH | Döllnitzer Ritterguts Gose
May 12, 2014 | Bob McGurganDöllnitzer Ritterguts Gose

I think I’m biased against ‘summer beers.’ I don’t dislike them on philosophical grounds: I love a good Helles, and summer Sundays practically beg for <5% brews in an ice bucket (when they beg for brews at all). But the beers of summer tend to attract gimmicks that I don’t especially like, and that information informs my opinion – fair or not. Every summer I find myself surfing the chilly beer cave of a local packie, mentally un-checking more bottles than I’ve dismissed in the past eight months. Sunflower label? No. Hoppy wheat? No. Apple Crisp whatever? Uh, no.
Arcane-looking German fellow with a tophat…?? Check-a-roo.
