UPDATED: Strange Brew vs Strange Brewing Company
November 21, 2013 | Tristan Chan 10This morning it was announced that Marlboro, MA based Strange Brew Homebrew Shop and Denver, CO based Strange Brewing Company reached a mutual settlement on their year long trademark dispute.
“I am glad that we were finally able to come to a resolution which respects our right to the Strange Brew trademark while still keeping Strange Brewing Strange,” said Brian Powers, owner of Strange Brew Beer & Wine Making. “Now we can focus on providing quality home brewing supplies throughout the busy upcoming holiday season, and moving forward with the permitting and construction of our own nano brewery.”
“As a small craft brewery, our objective is to create exceptional craft beer for our local, Denver community,” said Strange Brewing co-founder and head brewer, Tim Myers. “We’re extremely optimistic about the future and look forward to finalizing the agreement so that we can continue doing what we love – brewing quality, small-batch craft beer.”
Despite the settlement which allows Denver’s Strange Brewing to keep it’s name, in the opinion of this blog, Massachusetts based Strange Brew Beer & Wine Making still remains a giant turd. For more background on the dispute, listed below is our previous post:

The Ultimate 6er | Barleywine
November 20, 2013 | Cory Pelc
I love all things barleywine. Although I enjoy them year round, I believe that fall is the best season to sit back with a slow sipper and truly appreciate this robust style of ale. If you are like I am, handsome and mad-funny, barleywine ales stir up a slew of recollections and a certain sense of decadence. I picture a dreamy, dreary evening spent in front of the fire (insert favorite place to hang out) with a snifter of ale being slowly nipped from the glass like a whiskey or fine port. There are few greater occurences than enjoying finely crafted old ales when the weather is less than warm. Traverse the variations of booze-laden bliss with me as I highlight my Ultimate 6er of fall-friendly barleywine ales.

There are four sour women that have made their way into to town. These women have spent time aging in barrels and mingling with fruit. Gillian, Lolita, Juliet, and Halia are part of Goose Islands Vintage Ales that were recently put on shelves here in the Denver area. A few weeks ago on PorchDrinking we discussed our favorite beer labels and without a doubt in my mind these ladies take the cake. Read More

Savor Kentucky: A Celebration of the Commonwealth
November 13, 2013 | Jason Behler 2On the weekend of November 1-2, the Horse Capitol of the World, Lexington, Kentucky, played host to the Alltech National Equestrian Games. This event attracts horse aficionados from all over the country to our quaint city to share in our first-class horse facilities, our hospitality, and our culture. But there was more than horses on display this weekend at the Kentucky Horse Park, as Alltech introduced patrons to the tastes of Kentucky with an exhibition of Kentucky foods, bourbons, and craft beers, aptly named Savor Kentucky.

On a normal trip to my local liquor emporium, I stumbled upon a strange sight in one of the back coolers. Upon gazing, I see “Viru, beer from Estonia!”. My first thought was “where the hell is Estonia? Eastern block, maybe?” My next thought: “Well, I don’t think I’ve ever had a European beer from outside of Belgium, so let’s give it a whirl!”

Hopworks Urban Brewery – Abominable Winter Ale
November 11, 2013 | Andy HagemannIt’s that time of year. The temperatures have begun to tickle the freezing mark and now that I’m in Oregon, the rains have come. Yes, the fabled northwest rains that have prompted me to eat Vitamin D tablets like candy and consider purchasing a sun lamp. The other remedy for this otherwise depressing weather? A delicious, flavorful winter beer that warms the soul; a beer that is a little more malt-forward, slightly higher in ABV, and has the right spiciness and flavor that reminds me of the holidays. That’s what I have found in the Hopworks Urban Brewery Abominable Winter Ale.
West Flanders Brewing Company – Lion Heart Stout

Starting a new job always has its growing pains. Meeting new people, gaining more responsibilities, maintaining a new schedule are all thrown at you at once. It is important to find the delicate balance between these things, new and old. As I sat at the bar of my new employer, West Flanders Brewing Company, thinking about my new co-workers, responsibilities and more, the beer I sipped was a perfect example of successfully creating a delicate balance. Lion Heart Stout weighs in at a decent 7.7 percent and is offered seasonally by West Flanders Brewing Company.
Sixpoint Brewing – The Crisp

Although they are coming up on their 10-year anniversary, I did not become very familiar with Sixpoint Brewing until GABF of last year. Since then, it seems I am constantly introduced to more awesome facts about them. Not to mention their great beer. Just last night, I found myself in front of a phenomenal Chicago centric beer list, however I chose Sixpoint’s The Crisp, a combination of a German and Bohemian Pilsner.

It happened. It has officially gotten cold. My heat has been on. Friends in the suburbs have mentioned snow. Hibernation is impending. Time to stay in, marathon through Netflix and jump into flannel pajamas. Better yet, DRINK Flannel Pajamas stout. That’s right, the smooth, warm and inviting brew by one of Chicago’s newest breweries Begyle Brewing is sure to be a hit.
Fat Bottom Brewing | Black Betty IPA
November 5, 2013 | Liz Riggs 1
IBU: 56 | ABV: 4.4%
This time last year, the only beer I consumed for about two weeks straight was Fat Bottom‘s Black Betty IPA. It’s the first brewery to even exist in East Nashville (which literally just means that it’s the first brewery in Nashville that’s across the river from the heart of downtown), and for some reason that made this place a VERY big deal.
