What We’re Drinking | September 3, 2021
September 3, 2021 | Seth GarlandIt’s September. Instead of posting “Wake Me Up When September Ends” memes, fans have taken to the internet to remind people that the song is no laughing matter, and therefore, unmemeable. It’s about Billie Joe Armstrong’s father dying of cancer when he was 10. Sad. Because sadness is most of what the internet is used for these days.
What an age we live in where armchair social media dentists, pet experts, virologists, doctors, child psychologists and parenting experts can get together and combine their collective powers to suck the last remaining joy out of posts with dogs, babies, dogs and babies, or basically anything involving… anything <breathes in, breathes out>. It’s noon somewhere, as they say, and I clearly need to have a beer and chill. Here are some of the excellent beers the PorchDrinking crew’s been gettin’ at this week.

Deschutes Brewing Goes the Extra Mile with Brooks Running Partnership
September 1, 2021 | Taylor LaabsHow do you measure the success of your run? In calories burned, miles ran… or beers you’re able to consume afterwards? Many brewers and drink companies have leaned into that third category by making better for you NA-beers, light ABV options with salt and electrolytes, or even sponsoring races and marathons. The fitness drinker group is certainly a growing category, which is why Deschutes Brewing has decided to partner with one of the predominant running companies in the world, Brooks Running, on a new beer and merchandise line. The new, running-inspired “Run Hoppy” partnership updates Brooks’ “Run Happy” tagline with a playful nod to Deschutes’ IPA line and is sure to excite both runners and beer drinkers alike thanks to the corresponding launch of the Run Hoppy Golden IPA and a bevy of Run Hoppy merchandise, including an awesome new collectible Brooks Ghost 14 running shoe. Here are the details.

If things don’t turn around quickly, we’re looking at another winter with a lot of time on our hands inside. But let’s look on the bright side of life *whistles Monty Pythonically* — there’s more time to get really intimate with a new six-pack and find a new favorite beer.
Hopefully we don’t need it, but just in case we do, here’s a list of six fairly underrated websites to help kill boredom, and six awesome beers to pair with them.

Hopfly Brewing Co. | Triple Berry Fruited Sour
August 27, 2021 | Christopher HilliardWe’re very deep into the North Carolina summer. That means it’s sticky and wet and insufferable. That means it always looks like rain, but only actually rains for ten minutes at a time. That means heat so hot there’s no good reason to be outside, unless you’re sitting in the shade drinking a cold beverage. And what better beverage than something refreshing and delicious? For your consideration, I present Hopfly Brewing’s Triple Berry Sour.

Revolution Brewing’s Hazy Hero Heads to Sweden
August 25, 2021 | Taylor LaabsChicago’s Revolution Brewing is a constant presence on local shelves, with an ever-growing national footprint as well. The brewery’s well-crafted lineup of ‘Hero’ IPAs and Deep Wood barrel-aged beers competes well in the ever-competitive American craft beer market, but the immense competition among breweries and changing tastes of consumers has made the market more unpredictable than ever. Like any smart business, Revolution looked for new markets – and mouths – to sell their beer and struck gold in Sweden. Soon, Revolution’s Hazy Hero IPA will be available in 450 stores across the Scandinavian country. Here’s how the unique partnership came to be.

But alas, they live on, and I’m sad to tell you that due to rapidly rising COVID cases, the WeldWerks Invitational 2021 has been postponed until 2022.

Firestone Walker Double Barrel Ale Turns 25
August 23, 2021 | Robert FrenchNot many beers brewed in the US have an origin story that equals Firestone Walker’s Double Barrel Ale, aka DBA. So when Adam Firestone and David Walker, two brothers-in-law, set out to brew this beer in 1996, it was safe to say they were not just forging their own path. Instead, they were envisioning a new concept.
