Decipher Brewing | BBA Karabash Russian Imperial Stout

Decipher Brewing joined an elite tier of breweries that make barrel-aged beers recently, following the release of Bourbon Barrel Aged Karabash, from their new “Babington Project.” This release comes in 14.2%… but we’ll get to that later.
The Babington Plot was a plot in 1856 to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I, using coded messages hidden in beer barrel bungs. (We’ll let you do some sleuthing to see how that plot turned out.) Decipher Brewing picked this name based off their own work in the military with ciphers and what better way to link the two than with a BBA stout?

Banner recently celebrated her 20th anniversary as a professional brewer. Banner spent time at Harpoon Brewery in Boston, New Belgium in Fort Collins and BrewDog in Columbus. In November, Banner took her talents to Denmark to become the head brewer at To Øl in Copenhagen.

Pontoon Brewing | Volume Integral

The latest and greatest New England IPA to hit my palate is Volume Integral, a hazy double IPA brewed with oats and wheat which creates a very plush mouthfeel. The oats and wheat play well with the hops used in this beer which are El Dorado, Azacca, Mosaic and Belma. All of these combined create a lot of fruit and melon flavors that are balanced very well. The hop star of the show has to be the Belma hops which tend to create an almost strawberry-like profile.

Whitney Way calls herself the “Jill of All Trades” for City Star Brewing, and that title fits her perfectly. Way is a co-owner with her husband, John. She is also the general manager, the taproom manager, she does the brewery’s accounting and taxes and helps with the brewing.

Denver Beer Co. Hires Former Avery Barrel Manager as Director of Innovation

The winds of change continue to blow through Colorado’s craft beer landscape. One of the state’s most esteemed industry veterans is making a high-profile change this February, as Andy Parker, former barrel-manager at Avery Brewing has been announced as Denver Beer Co.’s new Director of Innovation.
Parker joined Avery in 2002 and was part of recipe development for most beers produced during that time period. While at Avery, Parker also helped to launch and oversee the Boulder-based brewery’s award-winning barrel-aging program, which grew from 30 barrels at its inception in 2007, to over 4,000 barrels at its height.

Because it makes the beer standout both on-shelves and in your mind. St. Louis-based Schlafly Brewing continues to churn out great beer can designs that celebrate the history or place of origin behind a beer’s name or style. It’s a unique approach that has paid dividends for the brewery and for their lead designer, Sarah Frost. To learn more about Frost’s unique approach to beer can art, what inspires her and what labels she’s most excited about this year, I asked her five questions.

In episode 74 of the PorchCast, we dove into some heady recent topics relating to Boulevard Brewing’s sexual harassment allegations and how they responded to those claims. It should be noted that almost concurrently as this episode was being aired, Boulevard Brewing issued a second updated statement where they did in fact acknowledge their fault in sexual harassment claims and clarified that the employee in question has been fired. This statement can be found on the company’s Facebook page.

Booneshine Brewing Co. | Space Pegasus NE Style IPA

Located in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina, Booneshine Brewing Co. calls the town of Boone its home. And, like many of the residents of Boone, they are explorers and adventurers, and their beers reflects that—both in name and ingredients.
Their Space Pegasus—a New England-style IPA—is also aptly named after exploring, as it will take you on an “intergalactic adventure”.
Novel Strand Brewing Releasing ALL CAPS Tribute to MF DOOM

Shrouded in mystery even through his recent passing, the iconic hip hop artist Daniel Dumile, who performed as MF DOOM, had a profound impact on the genre as a whole, in addition to his rabid fanbase.
A long time hip hop fan, Novel Strand co-founder and head brewer Tamir Danon, wanted to pay homage to the iconoclast, who he felt influenced hip hop artists and helped get a lot of people into the genre dating back to the early ’90s. Understanding the delicate nature of wanting to pay tribute without exploiting the artist’s passing can be a difficult balance, Danon wanted to ensure that the focus of the brand remains on the artists’ lyrics and talents. On the back label, Danon worked with an artist to transcribe lyrics from DOOM’s track, ALL CAPS with emphasis on particular words to translate the way it should be sung.

While many of you are participating in Dry January, some of us are participating in Double Dry-Hopped January. Double dry-hopping is the process of adding hops after the wort is cooled, twice to add those beautiful hop aromas to a beer. You are essentially dry-hopping the beer twice. There is no real set way to brew a DDH beer because every brewery and brewer has their own way of doing it. It’s all in the science and creativity of making this beautiful liquid we all love. Since the holiday chaos and rush has slowed down, it’s a good time for some reflection. We wrapped up some of our favorite beers and the biggest beer stories across our regions to end 2020. One story that caused a greasy splash was the collaboration between Waffle House and Georgia’s own Oconee Brewing Company for an official beer.
Now, a few weeks later, we’re wiping down the table and diving into the bacon-infused Red Ale that is Bacon & Kegs.
