Staying Warm with a Barrel-Aged Ultimate 6er

January 29, 2014 |

Unlike our friends in Denver, the rest of the nation has been getting cold. Really cold. So cold that there are swirling cyclones of polar bears flying across the country biting our faces off as soon as we walk outside. Well my friends, lets not get polar vortexed and instead stay inside and have a beer. But not just a beer, six beers, and not just beers, but barrel aged high ABV warming goodness. Let’s face it, when you want to be warm you need a drink that’s not only alcoholic, but one that has been aged in alcoholic vessels. So let’s not fool around anymore and get this barrel aged ultimate 6er started. Read More

Ultimate 6er | Backcountry Skiers and Snowboarders

December 19, 2013 |

It is well documented that Coloradans have an intense passion for the outdoors. I’m talking fire in the circus and somehow the flaps are locked kind of intense. So it’s no surprise that after years on the slopes, many Colorado residents feel the need to up the ante when it comes to winter sports. Enter backcountry skiing and snowboarding. Backcountry skiers and snowboarders can be seen stranded intermittently, dotting the sides of the winding mountain roads adjacent to ski resorts with constant patience in wait for a ride back to the top of the hill, usually with a tasty brew. While packs and equipment are not only common, but necessary, a reserved spot for a churchkey in said packs and equipment, is not. Not to worry, here is your ultimate 6er of beers while waiting for your buddy and Truck (Truck is the name of his Prius) accompanied by unique ways to open bottled beers with limited equipment. Ultimate 6er- Party in PA (Celebration Edition)

December 4, 2013 |

It is this writer’s opinion that events are going pretty well in PA lately, and celebration is in order. These beers, all of PA soil, commemorate the perfect Black Friday upset in the Bahamas with Villanova beating Kansas, previously undefeated and ranked 2nd in the country, then Iowa the night after. Plus, with the return of the Flyers into the conversation about the Metropolitan Division, things have been pretty even keel for once, just like these beers in conjunction. Now, to the hometown heroes of this Ultimate 6er. Read More

The Ultimate 6er | Black Friday Edition

November 28, 2013 |

The most controversial shopping day of the year is nearly upon us. Black Friday (now starting on Thursday evening) is the one chance a year to score outrageous deals on things you didn’t even know you needed. Some people live for this day, planning months in advance and scouring every store’s mailers for the deals of the century. Others avoid it like the plague, refusing to leave their house and risk getting caught up in the cutthroat madness. A select few have even been known to consider it a spectator sport and wake up at ungodly hours to watch the chaos ensue…guilty as charged. Regardless of which group you identify with, at the end of the day, you are going to need to do some serious recovering and reassessing. This will surely call for the Ultimate 6er Black Friday Edition. Read More

The Ultimate 6er Guide to Thanksgiving

November 27, 2013 |

Thanksgiving falls short to only Amurrrcuhhh Day as my favorite holiday because it’s basically the O.G. (original gangsta) of Amurrrcuhhh Days. And there is nothing better about Thanksgiving than the gluttonous consumption of turkey, taters, OFGBC (old fashioned green bean casserole), stuffing, gravy and, of course, beer. This year PorchDrinking wanted to ensure that you had the perfect sixer for your Thanksgiving meal. So, without further ado, your Thanksgiving edition of the Ultimate 6er.

The Ultimate 6er | Barleywine

November 20, 2013 |

I love all things barleywine. Although I enjoy them year round, I believe that fall is the best season to sit back with a slow sipper and truly appreciate this robust style of ale. If you are like I am, handsome and mad-funny, barleywine ales stir up a slew of recollections and a certain sense of decadence. I picture a dreamy, dreary evening spent in front of the fire (insert favorite place to hang out) with a snifter of ale being slowly nipped from the glass like a whiskey or fine port. There are few greater occurences than enjoying finely crafted old ales when the weather is less than warm. Traverse the variations of booze-laden bliss with me as I highlight my Ultimate 6er of fall-friendly barleywine ales.

Ultimate 6er | It’s the Great Pumpkin Beer, Charlie Brown!

October 30, 2013 | 1

It’s that time of year again, when the leaves begin to turn from their summery, verdant green to all shades of red, orange, and yellow. And they reach their peak crunchiness for the most satisfying of leaf stepping. It is finally time to don sweaters and cozy scarves. The winds begin to bring in a chill, and with those crisper temperatures come the familiar smells and tastes of fall: pumpkin and spice. Many look forward to enjoying that first slice of pumpkin pie, or perhaps that Pumpkin Spice latte in the morning (with the honorable mention of gorging on Halloween candy). But for us PorchDrinkers, we look forward to the release of the spicy, oh so delicious pumpkin beers. So here are a few of the best pumpkin beers I’ve sampled this season to cozy up with during the autumnal days ahead.

Ultimate 6er for Your Government Shutdown

October 4, 2013 |

Well, Congress has done it again: managed to completely frak up everything. And this time, they have managed to shut down almost the entire government (yes, that thing they are supposed to keep running). So this unfortunate turn of events leaves a lot of feds and Congressional staffers sitting around at home without a paycheck. So what will they do? What will the rest of us do to support them and stand in solidarity? Why, drink beer of course! Here are some PorchDrinking pro-tips on the best beers to drink during the government shutdown:

Ultimate 6er – Big Ten Football Part I: Leaders Division

October 2, 2013 | 1

By now you all are used to me basing my Ultimate 6ers on popular TV shows. This time around, I’m doing something a little different. Inspired by the Ohio State v. Wisconsin game that took place this past Saturday, I’ve decided to do a beer for every team in the Big Ten. Lucky for me the conference actually has 12 teams split into two divisions, Leaders and Legends. This week’s six pack will focus on the Leaders, and you’ll notice each team is matched with a beer made in its state. Read More

The Ultimate 6er – Duck Dynasty

September 4, 2013 |

What if you favorite duck-calling, frog-hunting, beaver-killing family were epitomized into a specific beer style? If you were to match these crazy Louisiana hunters with your favorite craft brew, what brews would you choose?

Barclay’s Premier League Ultimate 6er

August 21, 2013 |

As a longtime Liverpool supporter (circa 2000 when European soccer began getting some airplay on American sports television), mid-August marks the beginning of the grueling10-month endeavor known as the Barclay’s Premier League (BPL, formerly the English Premier League, EPL) season. Now much has been made of this upcoming season as NBC Sports has obtained rights to show all BPL games this season, and with that new contract NBC has ramped up their marketing.

It’s gettin’ hot in here… | Ultimate 6er

July 24, 2013 |

Hey America, Summer has definitely arrived. Clearly, we here at PD promote porch (outdoor) imbibing. However, it doesn’t matter what region you’re in right now, melting in humidity or frying in the desert, it’s HOT out there. I found myself at a beer fest the other day where I was sipping ice cold sangria (gasp!) There was just no perfectly refreshing summer beer available to help beat the scorching heat. Which brings us to my Ultimate 6er for a hot-as-hell summer.

Ultimate 6er – An Intro to Sour Beer

July 17, 2013 |

Working at a beer store I find the most common style people are insatiably curious about is the sour beer category. There are a few different ways to make a sour beer. The most common methods include using wild yeast strains like brettanomyces or adding certain types of bacteria into the brew – saccharomyces, pediococcus, and lactobacillus being the most common. I’ve done my best to include an ecclectic mixture that showcases a little taste of each in my Ultimate 6er – An Intro to Sour Beer. Read More
