PorchDrinking Sports Week-in-Review 9/7-9/13
September 17, 2012 | Mike ZollerI told my girlfriend two weeks ago that I wanted to spend the entire weekend with her. Just the two of us doing whatever she wanted—she nearly had tears in her eyes. At the end of the weekend I let her know that I would be busy for the next six months.
Story Time With Hank | Story Time With Coyote, Part 2
September 14, 2012 | Hank HenryGood day, everyone. May it and every other day be one more pearl on a long chain of pearls that brings you a great deal of personal satisfaction—maybe you wear it around your neck, maybe you keep it in a drawer; it doesn’t matter. Last week, if you were here, you met a man named Coyote and read a little bit of his story. Read More
PorchDrinking Fantasy Football Draft Recap
September 13, 2012 | Mike RuckiThank you to everyone for stopping by to read the draft recap for the inaugural PorchDrinking.com fantasy football league. Along with a pick-by-pick breakdown of every round, I’ve also included a brief snippet of analysis behind why I made the selection I did. There also may be a snide remark mocking my fellow owners for their poorly made decisions. On a rare occasion, I might even dole out some praise. Be sure to check back weekly to see a quick breakdown on the previous week’s match-ups as well as some recommendations I have for the upcoming weekend’s matchups. Good luck and good drinking! Roundtable Discussion: Fictional/Nonfictional Childhood Games
September 12, 2012 | Tristan ChanWhile we’re still in the midst of back to school season we decided to find out just how weird our staff members were as kids. It did not disappoint. This week I posed the question of what their favorite childhood games were growing up. This could have been made up, obscure or traditional. Hilarity ensued.
News Week in Review | Election Update, Pakistani Girl Released, Otters Save the World
September 9, 2012 | Kate StarkRepublican and Democratic Tickets Officially Set
Last week, Romney received the Republican presidential nomination. This week it was Obama’s turn at the DNC. No big surprise that the POTUS accepted his nomination for a second term. But it happened. And Bill Clinton came out in support of Obama with a crowd-pleaser of a speech.
Pop Culture Week in Review: 9/1 – 9/9
September 9, 2012 | Nik HeimachKnow, dear reader: we live in trying political times. The right hates the left, the left lampoons the right and between the destructive forces of the two-party system lay the twitching corpse of the American electorate, tragically caught in the crossfire. Read More
Story Time With Hank | Story Time With Coyote
September 7, 2012 | Hank HenryHi, folks. Hank Henry here. In lieu of my regular Friday garbage, I’ve arranged a special treat: a guest column written by a friend of mine. His name’s Coyote and he lives across the street. Um. Yeah. Introductions are boring. I’ll let Coyote take it from here. Read More
New Belgium Tour De Fat 2012 – Fort Collins
September 7, 2012 | Andy ManshelOn a sunny summer Saturday, it’s only 8am and the mercury is already over 80 degrees; today is going to be a hot one. I dug into the bowels of my closet to find whatever mismatch of clothing and/or flair I could get my hands on, grabbed a backpack full of water, sunscreen, and PBR and hopped on my bike. This, my friends, is the beginning ritual for thousands of beer enthused, fun lovers all around the country when New Belgium Brewery’s Tour De Fat rolls into town. Read More
Roundtable Discussion: More Holidays Bro
September 5, 2012 | Tristan ChanWe are a nation of hard working, non-slacking off, nose to the grindstone individuals, which is why most of you will be reading this when you should be working on something else. Hey, we aren’t pointing any fingers, hell we didn’t have a new post up for three straight days this past Labor Day weekend. Speaking of which, I’m not complaining but is it really necessary to have a holiday for the American Laborer? While we’re at it, perhaps we should just think about adding a few more superfluous holidays, which brings us to this week’s roundtable discussion. I challenged our staff to come up with their own made up holidays. Read More

Story Time With Hank | ADHD in the Outfield
August 31, 2012 | Hank HenryStill on the road, so this is gonna be another quickie. I’d apologize, but “you’re welcome” is probably more appropriate.
The plan this week was the same as the plan last week: namely, sitting in bars, dropping some eaves, hoping other people would basically write this thing for me. Except last week’s material came out of a clean and well-lit sports bar, which I figured was a fluke. The best stories, in my experience, usually come out of the shittiest bars. So for three nights I sat in dark rooms on wobbly stools, waiting, listening and taking copious notes. Being looked at weird for taking such copious notes. But I think I overshot my mark; these bars were too shitty. I didn’t hear the kinds of conversations I was hoping to hear, the kinds of conversations I can share with tender-hearted readers. I have a notebook full of stories about prostitutes. Read More

Fantasy Draft List
August 29, 2012 | Drew TrollerArmchair quarterbacks, it’s time to move your recliners to the porch. Nothing goes better together than football and beer —for proof, look no further than the advertisements during any football game ever. And since there’s no shame in having a cold one during a game, it stands to reason that you might as well drink beer during fantasy football too, right?
Roundtable Discussion: Are You Ready For Some Football?!
August 29, 2012 | Tristan ChanI’m pretty sure you can already feel it in the air, that crisp early morning breeze, the prevalence of leaves starting to crunch with each step you take down the sidewalk, the crackle and aroma of wings wafting through the air, and the unavoidable discord coming from national pundits about an irrelevant Tim Tebow… let me repeat IRRELEVANT.

PorchDrinking Playlist: Cover Songs
August 28, 2012 | Tristan ChanWhen I was younger, I used to hate cover songs. Who were these hacks thinking they could just steal credit for the brilliant song writing of a trailblazing artist? Why did the general public not notice that John Mayer, who sounds like Adam Sandler’s Little Nicky, ripped off Joni Mitchell’s Paved Paradise, or that Alien Ant Farm tarnished the legend that is Michael Jackson. High school was an angsty time for me as was most people, but at least music was a good reason for that angst. But soon I discovered that not all covers should be viewed with such disdain. In fact most of these serve more as tributes, and for a cover to truly succeed, it has to be poignantly different from the original. And so I bring you the best cover songs that were able to convey just that.

NFL (Non)Storylines
August 27, 2012 | Michael VaughnI think everyone is so caught up in the baseball storylines this August that we have almost totally forgotten that the NFL is almost back (sarcasm). It’s time to take a look at some of the less discussed story lines heading into this season.

Story Time With Hank | Time Travel
August 24, 2012 | Hank HenryIt’s not quite six o’clock in the evening, and I’m sitting in a sports bar that someone’s wedged into the lobby of the hotel in which I’m staying. Or maybe the bar was here first and the hotel grew out of it like a profitable tumor. Either way, it’s an awkward arrangement: certain tables are all but behind the reception desk and every now and then a brass luggage trolley bumps and nudges its way through the maze of tables and chairs laid out by the bar staff, leaving behind it a wake of spilled drinks and muttered curses then disappearing into one of the elevators on the far wall.

Pop Culture Week in Review for 8/17-8/24
August 24, 2012 | AdminUpfront apology—this is a bit sad. Today, in my regular podcast listening I found out that comedian Tig Notaro was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. I would like to first (well, I guess, second) say that I don’t know this woman. I find her absolutely enjoyable but I don’t actively follow her career. That said, when I heard she was diagnosed, it was as if a close friend or relative of my very own had been given this news. I know a lot about her from the various podcasts she’s done and she’s had a string of really, really awful things happen in her life. Notaro was hospitalized with pneumonia that developed into a bacterial infection and lost 30 pounds. A few days after she was released from the hospital, her mom died after falling and hitting her head. Then, her girlfriend broke up with her. And now she has cancer. Oh, and all that happened in the last FOUR MONTHS. I just cannot understand how all that can happen to one person. I’m a little ball of emotion right now but I highly encourage you to check out her comedy and laugh through sadness.
