Humans of Stock Photos
July 9, 2015 | Drew TrollerBy now you’ve heard of “Humans of New York,” the blog/social media content of photographer Brandon Stanton. Stanton takes photographs of random people he meets on the streets of New York City, coupled with captions quoting the people he meets.
They’re usually quite profound—for example: Read More

My car really wants me to listen to this Bronze Radio Return song.
June 26, 2015 | Drew Troller 2
I’m afraid of getting into my car. Each time I turn the ignition, I wince in anticipation for what awaits me. More than traffic or accidents or the stresses of driving LA’s streets, I am afraid of something that haunts me every time I get into the car:
“Above, Below” by Bronze Radio Return. Read More
“Jurassic World” Review – Featuring the Comments section
June 12, 2015 | Drew Troller22 years after the original “Jurassic Park” film, the fourth installment in the franchise will be released this weekend. “Jurassic World” is expected to create a big draw at the box office, to the point where critical reception is almost irrelevant.
But just in case, we at PorchDrinking want to bring you insight into “Jurassic World” from the only source you can really trust to accurately gauge the quality of any work. And no, we don’t mean Peter Travers or Roger Ebert or any of those entertainment shows. We’re talking about the magical place where grammar, punctuation, capitalization, syntax, and measured opinions go to die—comments sections on the internet. That’s right—for the next few paragraphs, I’m putting my English degree on a shelf and welcoming my guest contributors from the dark recesses of internet comments sections.

Pop Culture Week in Review | May 23-29
May 29, 2015 | Drew TrollerHappy Friday, my fellow pop geeks!
You may notice that something here reeks
This pop culture recap’s in rhyme —
And not for the first time —
And it’s Drew’s 4th recap in as many weeks
But this pop culture recap won’t miss a beat
I have every celeb story and tweet
Limericks are gimmicks, but listen,
I don’t ask approval from Tristan,
Admit it, pulling it off would be a feat
Letterman’s Legacy
May 28, 2015 | Christian Bolen WalkerLast week, David Letterman signed off from late night television for the last time. After a record 33 years and 6,028 episodes, he gave his final monologue and said farewell to his desk. The 68-year-old comedy veteran stayed true to his style by keeping his emotions in check, but the final show was packed with nostalgia inspiring clips of his career and plenty of thank you’s for his crew, family, and fans. With the late night television roster playing musical chairs with its hosts, it’s important to take pause and give the proper appreciation for Letterman’s journey and legacy.
Pop Culture Week in Review: May 16-22
May 22, 2015 | Drew TrollerAfter doing a 500-word limit the last few weeks, it’s time to really let the Pop Culture Week in Review breathe. Instead, this week’s entry will read sort of like a pop culture journal entry. After all, these recaps aren’t here to give you polished, full-on reporter details of what happened in the week. I’m here to synthesize the week in pop culture for you, outputting one dork’s impressions. With that in mind: Below is a chronologically accurate re-telling of the pop culture I consumed and observed this week, copied out of my notebook. Only minor style changes have been made. Enjoy! Pop Culture Week in Review (in 500 Words) | 5/10 – 5/16
May 15, 2015 | Drew TrollerRemember last week when I did the pop culture week in review in EXACTLY 500 words? Well, I’m going to do the same thing this week. 500 words – no more, no less – to recap the week in entertainment news. Hey, only 57 more of these posts until I pass the word count of “Of Mice and Men.” Only 374 more until I pass “The Fellowship of the Ring.” And only 842 more until I eclipse the latest George RR Martin book.
Yes, I counted. Anyway… Here we go! Read More
Pop Culture Week in Review…In 500 Words | 5/3 – 5/9
May 8, 2015 | Drew TrollerThat’s right, this week I’m giving myself a challenge: recap the week in pop culture in EXACTLY 500 words. No more, no less. It’ll be quick, and give you a chance to count to 500 to see if I’m lying. I’m wasting words explaining. Let’s go! Read More
‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ | Avenger Beer Pairings
May 1, 2015 | Jess Baker
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” is finally here! It’s no secret that, like Cap 2, “Winter Solider,” this storyline will shift the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. Alliances will fall. Will we lose a hero? How much chaos will be left in the end?
The only thing that seems certain is that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will need a beer (or seven) after the dust settles. The question is, which beer do these characters turn to? We kept it American (depending on which cities Ultron destroys, imports might be tough in the MCU anyway, right?). We’re also basing the picks on cinematic storylines, and not purely on comic book history (since that’s about to reset itself again as The Verge reports). Read More
22 Pieces of Advice for the 22-year-old Version of Me
April 30, 2015 | Drew Troller 1
This week marks the 3-year anniversary of my move to Los Angeles. I was 22, unemployed, broke, and sort of aimless when I moved here. Now I’m 25 and employed, but barely any less broke or aimless.
If I could go back in time, I’d have some stuff to say to 22-year old Drew. Here’s a bit of it. Read More
Pop Culture Week in Review | 4/18 – 4/24
April 24, 2015 | Christian Bolen WalkerThis week’s Pop Culture Review isn’t so much a look into the past week as it is a glimpse into the future. We’ve got departure dates for some of our favorite TV hosts, announcements for upcoming projects in TV and Film, and we have four movie trailers that are guaranteed to awaken your inner nerd.
Awesomesauce | App Happy
April 23, 2015 | Laura MegoHow do you manage the apps on your smartphone?
When I first approached this question, it seemed benign. Upon further conversation with others, I’ve learned that the question is anything but innocuous; in fact, it’s downright divisive. I’m talking “Hello, I’m a Mac. And I’m a PC” levels of loyalty here. While I’ve come to realize that there is no middle ground between the two camps (and that I’m, of course, some weird hybrid of the two; folders AND mutiple home screens for the win!) in my quest to discover which method is best, I’ve come across two of my new favorite time-wasters…I mean…apps.
“Game of Thrones” Character OR “This American Life” Contributor?
April 7, 2015 | Drew Troller
Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows in the history of television, and the epic fantasy series has many characters who have become household names for fans of the show.
But there’s something about the “Game of Thrones” character names that sounds familiar. The spelling, cadence, and sheer uniqueness of naming conventions in Westeros reminds me of some of the great names I’ve heard from contributors to the public radio show/podcast, “This American Life.” Sort of like how Hunger Games characters sound like NPR anchors to me.
Don’t believe me? See for yourself – take the quiz below to find out if you can tell the difference between “Game of Thrones” characters and “This American Life” contributors in our name game. Read More

Pop Culture Week in Review: March 21-27, 2015
March 27, 2015 | Drew TrollerPip, pip, cheerio! Our first three pop culture stories this week deal with British celebrities and programs. Er, sorry, that’s programmes (with the emphasis on the second syllable, of course). So this is PorchDrinking Britain, where we spell colour with a “u” and drive on the left side of the road and have a very dry sense of humor and for some reason use vinegar as a condiment.
Some of these stories are American, though, so stay tuned, Yanks! Read More

Pop Culture Bracketology 2015
March 19, 2015 | Drew Troller 1
It’s a tale as old as time. Or, at least as old as March Madness bracketology.
You look over the bracket. You study up on the teams. You consider expert opinions. You even look up Vegas odds for every game. And finally you make smart, well-informed, clever picks for the NCAA tournament. And you enter your bracket into the office/school/family/friend pool.
And the winner of the pool? That one damn entrant who has never seen a basketball game, and picked teams based on which school has the best colors, or what names sound funniest, or even just whatever teams they’d heard of.
The beauty – and agony – of March Madness is that no one can predict what will happen. The race often goes not to the strong or the clever or the patient… but to the random. So here at PorchDrinking, we’ve come up with a very pop-culture way to pick your bracket. Read More
Pop Culture Week In Review | March 7 – March 13
March 13, 2015 | Christian Bolen WalkerAndy Samberg hosting 2015 Emmys
Andy Samberg, SNL veteran and current star of Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has been tapped to serve as the host the 2015 Emmys, which is due to air September 20th. There’s a pretty solid track record of SNL alum making their mark as critically acclaimed hosts, with Samberg following in the footsteps of Seth Meyers, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler. Although he won an Emmy for writing on Saturday Night Live and won a Golden Globe for his work on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, this will be his first time emceeing a major awards show. Read More
