Movie Stars Making More Than Movies
March 6, 2015 | Christian Bolen WalkerI’m a big fan of Kevin Spacey, but I think he was objectively a perfect choice for the role. Just when you believe his character is actually a good person, he flips the switch and you see the monster underneath. A magnetic performance. That’s why I was pumped to learn that Bill Paxton and John Malkovich joined the cast! Granted, it’s a bit of a side plot and it’s all about zombies, but you can’t go wrong with that kind of talent. What’s that? Oh no, I’m not talking about House of Cards. I’m talking about a video game.
Pop Culture Week in Review | February 28-March 6
March 6, 2015 | Drew TrollerFebruary doldrums are over, everyone! Here we are in March. Summer blockbusters are around the corner. Many great TV shows return in the next couple months (lookin’ at you, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and Veep)… it’s getting warmer here in LA (sorry, everywhere else in America). It’s reason to celebrate!
Anyway… let’s get started with this pop culture week in review! Read More

Hail to the Chief | House of Cards Drinking Game
February 27, 2015 | Erin Petrey 1There’s an extra chill in the air. The winds have begun to change. It’s that time of year again when we cozy up to our Netflix accounts and watch as the political backstabbing, intrigue and bloodshed sweep through our nation’s Capital. As the new season of everyone’s favorite political thriller premieres, it is time to prepare ourselves with the best way we know how: with a House of Cards drinking game.
So stock your bars and pour a tall one. There is a new President in Washington. Here’s to you, President Underwood.

Pop Culture Week In Review: 2/14 – 2/20
February 20, 2015 | Christian Bolen Walker
It’s tough to follow last week’s review, since it was objectively a thrilling week in the pop culture world. Jon Stewart announced he’d be leaving The Daily Show, Brian Williams taken off the air, and Kanye being Kanye at the Grammys. This week may not be as full of shocking revelations and moments of drama caught on film, but there’s definitely a few things of which we can take note.
The Oscars: What to Watch Before Sunday
February 19, 2015 | Admin
The Oscars are Sunday and I know what you’re thinking: “Oh CRAP. I haven’t seen anything. And I’m hosting an Oscar party. What am I going to do?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?”
First, calm down. I have triaged all the films to give you the most bang for your buck (or illegal download, as it were).
Pop Culture Week in Review February 7-13 | This will (maybe) BLOW YOUR MIND
February 13, 2015 | Drew Troller
Sorry for the click-bait title. It was tongue-in-cheek. But in nearly 3 years of doing these pop culture week in review posts for PorchDrinking, I’ve noticed that a lot of weeks are very hum-drum… I go through the motions to make the Hollywood news seem sort of funny or moderately interesting. Other weeks, I can’t contain how many stories come out that resonate deeply within me and other pop culture nerds.
This week is the latter. TONS of stuff happened this week that I could barely believe. Let’s get into it. It’s the POP CULTURE WEEK IN REVIEW THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE (results may vary)!!!!! Read More

“Gotham” Gets It Right
January 26, 2015 | Christian Bolen Walker
Five of the top ten highest grossing films of 2014 starred superheroes. Release dates for more crime fighting epics continue to come out of the woodwork, effectively rendering any comic book nerd senseless with anticipation. With so much superhero noise, it can be easy to tune it out altogether. But then you might miss out on Fox’s new series, Gotham, which would be a mistake.
Pop Culture Week in Review: January 17-23
January 23, 2015 | Drew Troller
My fellow PorchDrinkers, I am here today to tell you that the state of pop culture is strong. (Hold for applause, standing ovation)
Yes, it’s the week of the State of the Union. Not really a pop culture event in the traditional sense, but try telling that to Twitter. It wasn’t just the President’s address to Congress that made people take notice this week. Plenty of news (well, “news” is a strong word so let’s just call it “stuff”) to cover in this week’s Pop Culture Week in Review. Let’s go.
Pop Culture Week in Review: 1/10 – 1/16
January 16, 2015 | Christian Bolen Walker
While summing up a week in pop culture, it can be difficult to sift through the abundance of gossip and trumped up fanfare that litters the entertainment news landscape. This week, let us ignore the tales of misbehavior and drama, such as Miley Cyrus posing nude for V Magazine, and Chris Brown getting his probation revoked, and instead let’s focus on the actual medium of TV and Film. There are so many trailers to debut, not to mention the announcement of Oscar nominees, that we may as well take one week to enjoy the final products that get us so hungry for news about the players.

Pop Culture Memories That Might Not Be Real
January 8, 2015 | Admin 3
On New Year’s Eve, I got home around the same time as my roommate. We chatted about the night as we ate grilled cheese and I was telling him about this Parks and Recreation video I saw on Facebook. “It was pretty funny,” I said. “Leslie was just slapping Jamm over and over again.” But when I looked through Facebook to try to find the clip, I couldn’t. I looked through my feed 4 times. What kind of sorcery was this? Did I make this up? Did I accidentally write a really funny Parks and Rec episode, one year too late? Read More
Pop Culture Week in Review: December 27 – January 2
January 2, 2015 | Drew TrollerLet me be the first to say: welcome to 2015! As your hangover FINALLY fades away, and as you try to figure out how the heck you’re supposed to get rid of a super-dead Christmas tree without leaving zillions of pine needles behind, take a moment to reflect. Not on the past year, I mean. Just the past week. It’s the first pop culture week in review of 2015! Read More

Drew Saves Christmas Music!
December 25, 2014 | Drew Troller
Each Christmas you hear holiday songs, new and old
From carols in church to classics by Nat King Cole
But every year, all across the nation
You’ll see NEW Christmas albums in your nearest Starbucks locationYour favorite artists will sing those classics you’ve heard
But every once in awhile, they’re stumped by the words
Give it a listen, and whether you sing or you hum
There’s a few lyrics you might catch that are super-dumbSo this Christmas, PorchDrinking endeavors
To re-write dumb lyrics and make them more clever
We know we’re doing this quite late in the season
But Drew was mad about these lyrics, for some insane reason
