Terrapin Beer Co. | Cumulus Lupulus Imperial IPA
April 12, 2017 | Dan BortzABV: 8.1% | IBU: 101
Sometimes, after working night shift, a beer really hits the spot. Society might not approve of the fact that I’m drinking beer at 7:30 in the morning, but I really don’t care what they think. This morning, my wind-down beverage was a Cumulus Lupulus Imperial IPA from Terrapin Beer Company. I almost forgot that I had put it in the fridge a few days ago, but that beautiful blue can and its floating clouds caught my eye.

For this PorchDrinking Playlist we reached out to one of our favorite California natives, Mike Mraz, owner and head brewer for Mraz Brewing Company in El Dorado Hills, CA. We had the pleasure to meet Mike a few years back during the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO. It was a wonderful experience to walk the great halls of the Colorado Convention Center with such a knowledgeable master of beer. An expert craftsman showing us the way was both thrilling and a tad bit intimidating. Mike welcomed us into his crew for the weekend, resulting in an adventurous time. The following year we hung out again, inspiring a portion of our Are You GABF Experienced? playlist. Read More
Brewery Showcase | Noon Whistle Brewing
April 11, 2017 | Mathew PowersPhoto Credit: Noon Whistle Brewing via Facebook
The Noon Whistle Brewing story resembles one enjoyed by innumerable craft breweries, especially in Chicago. The brewery first sought to create a niche within the booming craft beer market by becoming Chicago’s premier session-beer location. But, now in its third year, abundant success has forced the Noon Whistle Brewing crew to adapt its vision, both to accommodate its growing business, and also satisfy a desire to brew a variety of great beer. Noon Whistle has transitioned from audience-seeker to a trusted name brand.
Scofflaw Brewing Co. | Basement IPA
April 11, 2017 | Mark ElliotHanging out in the basement has its own special connotation. They don’t usually say things about “your parent’s basement” in any positive manner. It could be the basement that freaked you out as a kid that you still have nightmares about OR it could be a basement man cave, perfect for beer geeks.
In many ways a combination of all three, Scofflaw Brewing got its start on a one-barrel system in the basement of the founder’s mother-in-law of all places. And out of that adventure came Basement IPA, which is quite honestly perfect to drink in any basement or building, field, plot or porch for that matter.

April 10, 2017 | Stacey GoersDC Brau is undoubtedly one of the mainstay brewers in the nation’s Capitol, available throughout the region and inspiring much of the craft beer growth that has occurred over the past few years. Its name recognition is paramount and its beers are more than familiar, even to the backseat craft beer drinker. Surprisingly, the brewery is only turning six years old this spring, but it’s celebrating in a big way.

Temps are over 50, the shy sun is starting to peek through grey skies, and patios are flooded with Vitamin D deprived Seattleites. And, as we’re always looking for reasons to fill our glasses, let’s use this seasonal shift as our next excuse. Get yourself a New Money IPA, from Skookum Brewery for this particular occasion.

And prost! They are actually doing it all — and doing it well.
Jersey Girl Brewing | Rake Breaker IPA
April 7, 2017 | Kristina KurdylaABV: 6.5%
Ah, Jersey Girl. There are many connotations associated with this phrase, beer most likely not making the top three. But you better get yourself acquainted with the name, because Jersey Girl Brewing has been pumping out some amazing brews lately with Rake Breaker leading the charge. Citrus and tropical fruit are showcased prominently on the nose. Additionally, when you catch that first whiff, you can’t help but smile and look forward to the moment that crisp and fresh, juicy, yet slightly sweet beer hits your taste buds rounding out with a bitter and dry finish. Starr Hill Brewery | King of Hop Imperial IPA

I was recently able to get my hands on this year’s four variations of Starr Hill Brewery‘s King of Hop. As a person of relatively simple tastes, my favorite version was the original Imperial IPA. The others all brought something interesting to the table, but this base beer is was made them all so good.

Stationed one block north of historic Wrigley Field is Uncommon Ground, the restaurant pub that also houses Greenstar Brewing, Chicago’s first certified organic brewery. On any glorious Cubs game day, patrons flock to Uncommon Ground for a taste of something different than the macro tall boys and greasy grub found up and down Clark Street.
