Ultimate 6er | Six Atlanta Beers For the Big Game
February 2, 2017 | Sarah DuffyIf you haven’t heard, there’s a big football game on Sunday. (Dear Roger Goodell, I will adhere to licensing rights and avoid using the name of said game, but I think the game will be super!) Let’s face it, for most of us whose teams failed to make it this far, the game featuring New England and Atlanta is secondary to the food, our squares, the commercials, and of course the beer.
So, for those of you rooting for the Falcons, here are six ATL brews that pay homage to the Peach State’s Dirty Birds.

SweetWater and Sam Adams Bet on the Big Game
January 31, 2017 | Sarah Duffy 2As Atlanta heats up in advance of this Sunday’s big match-up in Houston, everyone in the city is catching Falcons Fever. The affectionately nicknamed Dirty Birds head to the game for only the second time in the storied 51-year history of the Big Game and the city is convinced this is the year the Falcons will bring the iconic Lombardi Trophy home. Three Taverns Brewery | White Hops
January 31, 2017 | Sarah DuffyABV: 6.5% | IBU: 55
For me, porch drinking and beer are synonymous with family. My favorite beer of ALL time happens to be Three Taverns Brewery White Hops, which was introduced to me by my brother. For many of us, beer is deeply rooted in the emotion and stories associated with it, which is why I’m so drawn to Three Taverns White Hops.
Hi-Wire Brewing | Ringmaster’s Reserve Series – Raspberry Wheat Wine
January 30, 2017 | Christopher HilliardABV: 13.0% | IBU: 40
I just enjoyed the strongest beer I’ve ever had. Coming from one who actively seeks out high gravity beer, I feel like that’s something of an accomplishment. Even more so considering it’s from North Carolina, a state where the statutory limit of alcohol in beer is 15.0%. And while I don’t see much point in setting a legal limit at all, it’s very much preferable to the previous limit of 6.0% (I mean, really?). Thankfully this was lifted in 2005 when former NC governor Mike Easley signed NC HB 392 into law. I feel safe speaking for beer aficionados across the state when I say, “Thanks, Mike.”
Georgia Beer Day Events | January 28, 2017
January 28, 2017 | Josh RitenourWhile small and independent craft breweries across the nation strive to compete with big beer for shelf space and tap handle placement, there’s another prominent movement happening in the South. More specifically, in the one remaining state that still prohibits the on-site purchase of beer at breweries: Georgia, ooh Georgia.
However, thanks to the unshakable determination of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, a bill now exists in the state Senate to modernize Georgia’s ridiculous beer laws once and for all.
Georgia Craft Brewers Guild Announces Bill To Allow Breweries to Sell On-Site
January 27, 2017 | Johnathan PylantThe Georgia Craft Brewers Guild issued a statement yesterday saying that the 2017 General Assembly of Georgia will “consider legislation to allow consumers to purchase beer directly at the brewery that makes it”. This is exciting news for the one remaining state in America that still prohibits on-site purchase of beer at breweries. Little information was provided in the press release, but what was explained was good. Read More
Braxton Brewing Company | Bluff White Mocha Stout
January 27, 2017 | Melinda HersheyABV: 6.7% | IBU: 30
When I heard that one of my favorite Kentucky breweries, Braxton Brewing Co., was creating a “beer baby” to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of one of the most awesome local beer events of the year—Cincy Winter Beerfest—I was immediately excited. When I heard it was a stout beer, I was even more intrigued.

ABV: 10 | IBU: 40
It’s always a joy for me when a beer not only has a really good name, but the name is also perfect for the beer when describing it. Funky Buddha Brewery‘s I’m So Excited, I’m So Scared hits the nail on the jittery head with this imperial coffee stout; once I took a whiff of it I got excited, and it was so delicious upon tasting it I was a little scared! January 19, 2017 | John BaumThis year’s 13th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting event is a first for me. I’ve never attended a beer event that instructs you on dress code, but the folks at ACAT advise patrons to bring a hat and gloves.
Creature Comforts Brewing Co. Selects Historic Site for Expansion
January 19, 2017 | Johnathan PylantREJOICE! At long last, Creature Comforts Brewing Co. is making its move to expand into an additional facility in 2017 with the purpose of raising production (and possibly its footprint) in 2018. This news follows two years of steady growth as one of America’s fastest growing breweries and a zealous commitment to raise $100,000 for local community organizations. Creature Comfort’s future location of choice, the Southern Manufacturing Co. Mill, is no surprise to those who have followed the brewery over its short but influential career in Athens, Georgia. In high school, a party was a form of subversion, a rebellion, it was when you began to test the limits. It had it’s moments. The college party was more a celebration of freedom (see “Stair Diving” from 1984’s Revenge of the Nerds), and more testing of limits, but without the threat (or thrill?) of getting caught, it was merely a party for party’s sake.
Brewery Showcase | Eventide Brewing
January 10, 2017 | John BaumWhen I pull into the parking lot at Eventide Brewing, a squat, red-brick structure in Atlanta’s Grant Park neighborhood, a guy is standing atop a 20-foot ladder angled against the building. Wearing protective headphones the size of coconut shells and holding a drill, he watches me get out of my car.
I take a guess at who he might be:
“Nathan Cowan?”
“Yep,” he says. “Shawn’s inside, she’ll get you set up. I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
The drill, the ladder — none of this would surprise folks who know Cowan. Besides his role as the CEO of Eventide, he is also its head engineer. Having spent a decade working in the field of mechanical engineering and construction, Cowan still maintains Professional Engineer status with the state of Georgia, and practices his trade on much of Eventide’s brewing equipment. On this sunny Thursday, however, he is hanging a large banner announcing the brewery’s upcoming three-year anniversary celebration.
Red Hare Brewing Company | Berry Belgian Waffle
January 10, 2017 | Jose MinayaBerry Belgian Waffle is a truly unique beer that pushes forward the possibilities of beer and brewing style. We can all appreciate breweries that focus on hitting style profiles to the letter. These breweries strive to make classic examples of beer – those efforts often resulting in successful campaigns at the Great American Beer Festival. Berry Belgian Waffle may not be the next GABF medal winning beer out of the booming Georgia brewing scene; What it is, instead, is a fun example of a small brewery, Red Hare Brewing Company, having fun and pushing what is acceptable and expected from American beer.

Ultimate 6er | Southeast Dark Beer
December 27, 2016 | Mark ElliotWhen thinking about the beer needs of the South, it would be easy to discount the dark brews. Warm (if not blazing hot) weather, beautiful beaches, thick humidity, and rolling farms often naturally lead to IPAs, sours, wheats and other easy sessionable styles. But to ignore the dark beer coming out of the South would be a mistake. There certainly is less of it than in some other regions, but the brew that is produced can go toe to toe with the best of them.
