Homeschooling with Bugs and Avery Brewing’s Bug Zapper
April 24, 2020 | Dan OldsIf you are like me, then you’ve recently taken the part-time job of home-school teacher. My challenge has been to come up with interactive lessons that will keep my kids engaged and distract them from destroying the house. As the weather gets warmer, our science lessons have been moved to our backyard and the curriculum has been about bugs. Lucky for me, there is a beer for that: Bug Zapper from Avery Brewing Co. Hopefully, as we progress into summer, this beer will complement cool, relaxing nights and our encounters with some awesomely cool bugs in the great outdoors. Let us talk about beer and bugs, shall we?

What We’re Drinking | January 25, 2019
January 25, 2019 | Pam CatoeI was fortunate to spend my entire weekend with the lovely ladies from Pink Boots Society at the Biannual Conference here in Austin, Texas. We laughed, we learned, we even hung out with some goats, and most importantly, we were inspired. Then came Monday and the inevitable return to the dreaded work week. No matter what you are dealing with this week, (frozen temperatures perhaps?), here’s a little drinking inspiration from your PorchDrinking team in this edition of What We’re Drinking.
The Weekly Buzz | July 20 – 26
July 27, 2018 | Dan BortzI’ve just arrived at the point where I have decided to neglect my real, bills-paying job in order to do a little work for my Internet beer-writing gig. Typing this intro on my phone is a real time-saver! I don’t know why I never thought of this before. The sign on the door that reads “No Personal Cell Phones in Work Area” doesn’t bother me either. Everyone here knows that The Weekly Buzz is more important than operating this very complex cement plant control room. If only they’d let me drink on the job…

The Weekly Buzz | January 26 – February 1
February 2, 2018 | Dan BortzFoxboro, Mass. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy, and the New England Patriots are no exception to this. Our heroes, the Philadelphia Eagles, are about to meet these cheaters on the gridiron and bring the Lombardi Trophy home to the City of Brotherly Love. I know you’re all rooting for the right team. You’re impatient for the game to start. So, why not read a bunch of tweets about beer? This is The Weekly Buzz.
From Wentz we came. In Foles we trust.

The Weekly Buzz | July 21 – 27
July 28, 2017 | Dan BortzIf you’ve ever spent 12 hours in an amusement park with three young children, then you have a rough idea how my week has been. Although our family trip to Kennywood was ultimately a lot of fun, it did leave me in need of a beer or five. I’d like to toast all the parents out there for surviving these kinds of endeavors. As it’s the weekend once again, I invite you to raise a glass and enjoy The Weekly Buzz.

July 21, 2017 | Dan BortzHappy Friday, PorchDrinkers! Another beautiful beer-soaked weekend is upon us, and that means it is time to recap the week’s finest beer-related tweets. You could just go to Twitter and scroll through it yourself, but why subject yourself to all that political vitriol? I braved the trolls so you wouldn’t have to. So sit down on your porch swing and crack open a beer. It’s time to start The Weekly Buzz.

Vinyl & Beers | Milli Vanilla-i and Other Tales
April 20, 2017 | Karl KalinkewiczAs with all great vices, we tell ourselves that as long as we are contributing something positive to the world, then we can indulge our heart’s desires. At least that is what I have convinced myself with Vinyl and Beers, that I can drink as much beer and buy as many records as I deem necessary for the sake of beauty. Being fully committed to my art, I pair a record from my collection with every beer I drink at home, and these are their stories. DUN DUN.

March 10, 2017 | Dan BortzWednesday was International Women’s Day and breweries took to social media in droves to celebrate the women who make the brewing industry tick. Whether you’re talking about CEOs, janitors, brewers, bartenders, accountants or salespeople, the modern brewing industry wouldn’t be able to function without these brilliant and hardworking team members. Since I don’t think there’s any other news this important, I present you a special International Women’s Day Edition of The Weekly Buzz.

January 20, 2017 | Dan BortzIf you want to fill your calendar with beer events, you have hit the mother lode! There were tons of announcements this week. What We’re Drinking | December 23, 2016
December 23, 2016 | Dan BortzThe Winter Solstice has just past, and a few more holidays grow nearer, the PorchDrinkers seem to be setting their sights on bigger warmer beers to bring them cheer and warmth. Buried in this weeks selections, you will find new beers, old beers, barrel-aged beers, Bova-poses and fake Bova-poses. Grab your jingle bells, dump the egg nog down the drain, and sit in front of the Yule log. This is What We’re Drinking!
The Weekly Buzz | December 2 – 8
December 9, 2016 | Dan BortzIt’s dark when I go to work in the morning. It’s dark when I come home. Rather than sit next to a sun lamp, it’s much more fun to crack open a few craft brews. It’s my prescription for enduring the darkness. Also, on an unrelated note, I am not a medical professional. Pop the lid off the bottle, start taking your dose, and enjoy this week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz! Read More
