Surly to Remain Independent, Not Selling to Leinenkugel’s
November 17, 2016 | Mike ZollerCraft beer fans are breathing a bit easier after a picture showing Leinenkugel president Dick Leinenkugel and Surly President Omar Ansari lit the rumor mill on fire of a potential sale of Surly to Leinenkugel’s. The breweries made people sweat a bit before admitting it was all a joke just a few days later.
Ultimate 6er | 6 Beers to Get Through Thanksgiving with the Relatives
November 16, 2016 | John BaumAdmit it. The Thanksgiving Macy’s Day Parade sucks.
Only the high school marching bands offer live entertainment, while the rest of the parade is bloated with understudy casts performing pre-recorded show tunes, and one-hit wonder Billboard-chart newbies attempting to look excited while lip-syncing vapid hits next to puppets and Teletubbies. The floats are kind of cool, if you mute the scripted minutiae rattled off by the commentators, and a strangely skinny Al Roker donning his Indiana Jones hat while inserting puns and cutesy anecdotes. But this Thanksgiving, the parade may be the best part of the day. Think about it. How long after the turkey is carved might the conversation rumble down this dangerous road:
“You voted for _________?!”
“What? You didn’t?”
Let the post-election Thanksgiving melee begin. Read More
Event Recap | 2016 Festival of Wood & Barrel-Aged Beers (FoBAB)
November 16, 2016 | Mike ZollerNow that my liver has had a few days to rest I’m able to look back on the 2016 Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beers. There were definitely some beers worth highlighting that didn’t take home medals this year. Read More

Fossil Cove Brewing Co. | La Brea Brown
November 15, 2016 | Ross LarwoodJust like the weather, my palate is confused. Normally at this time of year I would like to be confidently making headway through my stash of last year’s stouts. When I wake up in the morning, I’d love for the house to be cold. I’d love for the last residue at the bottom of the dirty beer glasses on the counter to resemble motor oil. However, Mother Nature seems to be confused. Here in Arkansas we’ve barely had our first freeze and afternoon temps are still climbing in to the 70’s. I can’t make up my mind when paroozing the aisles of my liquor store or the taps at my favorite watering holes. The crisp and easy drinking/sessionable beers of the summer are long since in my rear view but I can’t bring myself to pull out the good stuff and dive headlong into stout season. The solution for a seasonally confused Arkansas beer drinker when you need something local to quench your thirst? Look no further than Fossil Cove Brewing Co.’s La Brea Brown Ale.

Renegade Brewing Company | Pancakes Maple Porter

Every year around mid-September the leaves start to change color, the air gets a crisp nip, and the shelves of your local liquor store turn bright orange with the annual onslaught of pumpkin beers. There’s nothing wrong with that; these beers have their place in my belly and my heart. But, there’s only so much gourd one man can consume. If only there were a pumpkin-free beer built for the fall. Cloudburst Brewing | Remember the Maine Smoked Pumpkin Porter
October 19, 2016 | Katelyn PelakABV: 5.1%
As our own writers have demonstrated, pumpkin beers can be a divisive topic. But despite the controversy attached to this particular category of beer, West Seattle’s beloved beer bar and bottle shop The Beer Junction has devoted an entire week to celebrating this type of beverage with an event titled Pumpkin Junction 2016. This event features 30 taps devoted solely to pumpkin beers and ciders for eight straight days (Oct. 15-23). I attended the Pumpkin Junction on opening day and chose Cloudburst Brewing’s Remember the Maine Smoked Pumpkin Porter as my inaugural pumpkin beer for the season. The Beer Junction’s promise of pumpkin did not disappoint.
Event Recap | Beers Made By Walking 2016
October 17, 2016 | Kara Loo and Kelissa Hieber 1Beers Made By Walking’s sixth go-around did not disappoint attendees at the Denver Nature and Science museum this past Tuesday, Oct. 4. Attendees rolled in at 5:30 p.m. sharp to fill their tasting glasses alongside earthly relics like a sparkling gemstone exhibit and a huge whale skeleton suspended from the rafters. The setting was certainly fitting for the nature theme of the festival, and breweries displayed whimsical adjuncts like pine cones and berries on their respective tables. I felt a buzz just thinking about how the event’s proceeds would be directly benefitting this museum we were standing in.
