Beer Is Art | Obakeng Malope’s Campaign to Lift South Africa’s Youth Out of Poverty Through Craft Beer
October 14, 2022 | Ruvani de SilvaObakeng Malope has a mission. The South African brewer and filmmaker has started a project blending beer culture and social change with enormous scope on both a national and international level, and her hard work and tenacity has already led to significant press and multi-national collaboration.
Malope is the creator of Beer Is Art, an initiative to offer access to the craft beer industry to South Africa’s unemployed young people. In the second quarter of 2022, 4.8 million 15-34 year old South Africans were unemployed, 46.5% of the population in that age group. Malope believes that the growing South African craft beer industry has the potential to help lift some of these young people out of poverty. “The youth are sitting at home unemployed here in South Africa. The campaign teaches about beer, that beer is not something that you drink and get drunk off. We teach beer and food pairing, brewing, beer podcasting and licensing. We show them that they can turn beer into a career,” she says.

With that level of market saturation, it can be difficult to stand out. Round Trip Brewing has been carving out a place for itself by offering a wide variety of exceptional craft brews. At a time when many craft breweries are just offering 10 variations of IPAs in their taprooms, Round Trip has made sure that they have something for everyone.

Yokefellow Beer | Sueño Peach Saison
September 8, 2022 | Ruvani de SilvaAn hour west of Austin sits the quaint historic town of Johnson City, TX. It’s the home of Lyndon Baines Johnson, the 36th American President. It’s named for his grandfather, Samuel Ealy Johnson, Sr. And the Blanco County seat is now best known as a cosy, picturesque stop on the Texas Wine Trail.
However, between the dual impacts of the pandemic and sky-rocketing house prices in the greater Austin area, Johnson City is taking on a new identity. It’s the hip Hill Country outpost, with three craft breweries and new concept watering hole Nice N Easy, home of locally produced Lightsome Wines and Yokefellow Beer.

3 Floyds Brewing | Crushing Mass BA Coffee Stout
August 29, 2022 | Jeff KneseNot every brewery has the bravado to put out a beer with the sheer coffee firepower contained in a bottle of Crushing Mass. 3 Floyds Brewing in Munster, IN is certainly not like every brewery. Crushing Mass is the latest example of 3 Floyds Brewing living up to their moniker of “It’s Not Normal” while still putting out a dazzling Barrel-Aged Coffee Stout.

South Asian Heritage Month | Why It Matters To The Beer Industry
August 9, 2022 | Ruvani de SilvaBeing a South Asian in beer within the diaspora can be a lonely business. As per Brewer’s Association data from 2021, just 2% of US breweries are owned by Asians, with no available information on South Asians specifically. With so few South Asians involved in the beer industry, taking time to reflect on and celebrate South Asian Heritage Month* (July 18 -August 1**) offers an opportunity to amplify our presence, support one another, and reach out and share our culture through the medium of beer, our chosen career or interest.
Beers of the Month | July 2022
August 8, 2022 | Brandon CohranSurprised the Summer is coming to a close? Shit, us too. 2022 seems to be on a direct flight to next year. The MLB Season is more than halfway over. Football happens this month. School, both public and colleges, are back in session. Summer is hightailing it and so it’s basically the holiday season now? That’s how it feels, anyway. However, we’ve been doing our best to pump the brakes and appreciate the little moments. Especially the beer ones. We’ve rounded up some of the best and our favorite beers over the last month-ish. Pipeworks Brewing Co. | Super Rainbow Sure Bet
July 28, 2022 | Jeff KneseSuper Rainbow Sure Bet from Pipeworks Brewing Company in Chicago isn’t subtle with its can design or willingness to use lots of ingredients. The beer itself, however, will surprise you. It’s a delicate but nuanced tropical Imperial IPA that is more like being kissed by a unicorn than kicked by one.

Event Preview | Session Fest 2022
July 21, 2022 | Danielle EngelIt’s been three years since Drake’s Brewing Co. has been able to throw their summer classic with Bike East Bay. But Session Fest is finally back for its eighth year, this Saturday. With no beer over 5% being poured, it is meant to be an easy going afternoon where you get to sample the lower-end ABVs that breweries have to offer. Hopefully, this makes for hangover-free Sunday the next day.

There are still plenty of brand new releases along with a few surprise returns for you to enjoy. Take your pick to help you beat the heat this summer, but make sure to keep it local as always!
