Reston residents Melissa and Jason Romano purchased a retail space at 11424 Washington Plaza and renovated it, seeking an English pub concept for their new Virginia establishment. The husband and wife team were pleased with the turnout, and the Reston community was enthusiastic Lake Anne Brew House finally opened.

We live in a state known for our curious alcohol laws. Laws we would say have inadvertently given strength to the Utah beer industry. Local breweries have been forced to brew beer at the low-alcohol 4% abv in order to serve on draft or be available in grocery or convenience stores. How can this possibly be a good thing you ask? It means: Utah-based breweries perfected the art of the ‘Session’ beer long before ‘Session’ became a thing for breweries (outside of the Beehive state) who looked for ways to avoid knocking out their consumers with huge alcohol content. Happy Days are Beer again! The 21st Amendment of the United States Constitution was ratified on December 5, 1933, ending prohibition. Fast forward to the year 2000 and this famous Amendment inspired a new brewery in San Francisco. 21st Amendment Brewery was founded by Nico Freccio and Shaun O’Sullivan and they opened the doors to their brewpub in the famous South Park neighborhood, a few blocks from the San Francisco Giants ballpark. Some of the fan favorites include: Brew Free or Die IPA, Hell or High Watermelon, Back in Black, Fireside Chat. The fan favorites need to watch their back because there is a new kid on the block and their name is Toaster Pastry.

Prologue: About Fiction Beer Company

One year ago, Ryan Kilpatrick and his wife Christa Kilpatrick brought Morrison’s quote to life and established Fiction Beer Company as the first brewery on Colfax Avenue. Nestled in the East Denver neighborhoods of Park Hill, Montclair, Stapleton, Mayfair, and Lowry, Fiction has become a local favorite. Their motto is “to rewrite the Denver beer scene by combining the two wonderfully imaginative crafts of beer and literature together.” A year later, they have successfully brought their dream to life: releasing over 28 different styles of beer, all of which tie into the world of literature.

Almost exactly one year ago, I was lucky enough to interview Adam Cayton-Holland, an up-and-coming Denver comedian on the brink of greatness. In that year, Adam has blown up. Adam’s comedy group, The Grawlix (which includes fellow Denver comedians Ben Roy and Andrew Orvedahl), was named to Variety’s list of Top 10 comedians to watch. The Grawlix also wrote and star in an original comedy series coming to truTV in a few months. Those Who Can’t hilariously explores the trials and tribulations of immature high school teachers.
Adam is back in Denver for the time being and will headline the upcoming Offensively Delicious Craft Beer Comedy Show also starring Sam Tallent, Andy Juett, and Kyle Kinane on September 23 at Oriental Theater in Denver. He took some time to update me on the exciting developments in his life.
