First-Timer’s Guide to Attending the Great American Beer Festival
October 3, 2022 | Rachel Morrison 2On Wednesday, I fly to Denver, Colorado for my first ever Great American Beer Festival. I’ve never attended GABF and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t overwhelmed. If you, like me, need advice for your first Great American Beer Festival, keep scrolling.

Great American Beer Festival Pouring Guide | Chocolate Beers
September 28, 2022 | David NilsenSome of the most sought-after beers at the Great American Beer Festival have been dessert-inspired Stouts with coffee, chocolate, vanilla, lactose, or other ingredients that appeal to drinkers’ sweet tooth, and the 2022 GABF pour list promises to be no exception. There are several dozen excellent chocolate beers at GABF this year waiting for you to try them.
Beers brewed chocolate—or, more commonly, cacao, the ingredient from which chocolate is made—aren’t just candy or dessert substitutes though. At its root, chocolate is an agricultural ingredient, and thoughtfully-brewed Pastry Stouts can highlight the possibilities of this tropical crop. Check out our guide to the most exciting chocolate beers at this year’s Great American Festival.

The Complete PorchDrinking 2022 GABF Week Events Guide
September 22, 2022 | Mathew PowersPart of the magic associated with the return of GABF involves all of the incredible beer events that take place outside of the actual festival. From special tap takeovers to paired beer dinners, out-of-state bottle releases, and collaborations to full-fledged beer festivals, the beer world descends upon Denver in all of its glory. With over a week jam-packed full of events, it can be a bit hard to navigate. Luckily we’re here to help sort through it all with the return of our 2022 GABF Week Events Guide.

2021 Georgia Best in Beer Year-End Honors
January 13, 2022 | Brandon CohranEven though 2021 seemed to pass by at an outrageous pace—two years of a pandemic will do that—there were several memorable beers, new breweries and stories that came out of Georgia. 2021 saw Lagers catch a ton of love across the state, finally. There were still plenty of other styles and releases that garnered tons of trades and attention, but shoutout to Lagers for stealing the spotlight. Seltzers, distilleries and everything in between are starting to populate and associate with craft breweries from Atlanta to LaGrange and north to south. Read More
Zipline Brewing Co. | Festbier
October 25, 2021 | Lori KitzingZipline Brewing Co. of Nebraska has earned another Great American Beer Fest (GABF) medal. In 2021 Festbier received the bronze medal in the style of Dortminder or German-Style Oktoberfest. What is special about the brewing process? “Time!”
5 Questions with Gravely Brewing President & Founder Nathaniel Gravely
December 2, 2020 | Kindsey Bernhard 1Gravely Brewing Co. in Louisville, KY won two medals at this year’s Great American Beer Festival. Sprockets, a German Pilsener, won a gold medal and Doc’s Dunkel, a German Wheat Ale, won a bronze. Gravely Brewing was the only Kentucky brewery to bring home medals at this year’s Great American Beer Festival.
An Interview with GABF’s Biggest Winners, Sun King
November 10, 2020 | Aaron GoreWhen one thinks about the state of Indiana, a few things may immediately come to mind. Corn, basketball and the show “Parks and Recreation” are all likely answers but for many, craft beer is not necessarily one of them. That is a shame, considering that at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival competition, the Hoosier State picked up an impressive 10 medals and was home to the brewery with the highest number of winning beers overall: Sun King Brewing.
Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Wins Big at GABF
October 21, 2020 | David NilsenWolf’s Ridge Brewing head brewer Chris Davison found out his brewery had won two medals at the Great American Beer Festival in the most 2020 way possible: over Zoom while getting his daughter ready for bed. The Columbus, Ohio, brewery’s team had a company Zoom call going while the awards were announced virtually from Denver. Chris had bedtime duties, and parenting supersedes brewing.
Jameson Caskmates Continues to Partner With U.S. Breweries
October 13, 2020 | Mathew PowersThe conversation that begat Jameson Caskmates transpired at a pub in Ireland’s County Cork in 2014, eventually evolving and growing into a program that included numerous U.S. Craft Breweries and ultimately a partnership with the Great American Beer Festival (2018 & 2019). Although GABF is virtual this year due to the relentless pandemic, Jameson remains focused as ever on its Caskmates and craft-beer partnerships.
Cerebral Brewing Announces National Lineup for All the Stops Can Jam
September 25, 2020 | Tristan ChanTypically by this point in the year, Colorado beer fans are already knees deep in big-time hype beer releases from breweries that aren’t typically available in the state. However, with GABF going digital, and the entire industry in a state of unknown due to the on-going pandemic, it’s been generally uncertain whether the typical treasure trove of special releases would be hitting the market.
GABF Passport | Illinois Breweries
September 21, 2020 | Mathew PowersIt’s tempting to bemoan the fact that the industry remains in a lengthy pandemic-induced pivot. However, it’s time to start focusing on what is instead of what isn’t happening. For this year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF), beer drinkers will have a chance to purchase a GABF Passport that gives them access to a host of good deals (an idea similar to Chicago and Illinois Craft Beer Weeks held in previous years). One can purchase the $20 GABF Passport and start enjoying brewery deals October 1 through October 18. As well, the passport gives beer drinkers an opportunity to attend (view) the star-studded Virtual GABF Festival (October 16-17) (which includes the awards ceremony).
Falling Rock Alternative Festival of Great Beer Aims to Fill Void of GABF
September 18, 2020 | Tristan ChanFor the past 22 years, on the Monday before the Great American Beer Festival (GABF), one of the country’s most iconic beer bars has helped usher in the event with a celebratory kick-off tapping at 5 p.m.
However this year, on September 21, when Falling Rock Tap House’s GABF countdown timer would normally have ticked down to all zeros, there will be little pomp and circumstance as the festival transitions to a virtual format in response to the pandemic.
Lone Pine Brewing Company | Chaos Emeralds
March 10, 2020 | Kailey PartinLone Pine Brewing Company is a not-to-be-missed brewery that quickly grew from a small hole in the wall spot to a major player in the New England craft beer scene. Lone Pine opened in Portland, ME’s East Bayside neighborhood in 2016; by 2019, they grew enough to warrant a major expansion in Gorham, ME. Lone Pine is known for its vibrant hop-forward American ales and, over the course of two years, Lone Pine has worked to create what they call the “quintessential NEIPA with boutique hops.” The offspring of that labor of love is their award-winning Chaos Emeralds Double IPA featuring Galaxy and Mosaic hops.
