Event Recap | Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Philadelphia
June 23, 2017 | Kurt BevilacquaAfter just a short time in line to get through security and ID checks, I made my way into the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, PA. I grabbed a sample glass with a green Sierra Nevada’s logo stamped on it and thanked the volunteers as I made my way into the festival grounds. Once in, I scanned the venue to see which tent to hit first. It can sometimes seem overwhelming when you first get into a beer festival, seeing the vast amount of choices with all the breweries lined up one after another. No choice is a bad one, but, personally, I was looking to begin the day off right at Beer Camp.
BrewDog | Paradox Rye Cask-Aged Imperial Stout
May 25, 2017 | Niel StenderABV: 15%
It’s not every day I see a 12 oz. can of beer sold with its own box. It reminds me of drinking a PBR tall boy out of a brown paper bag on NJ Transit. But, that’s Pabst and this is BrewDog Paradox Rye, a 15% ABV cask-aged beast of an imperial stout that, I suppose, gives it the right to be stored in a tiny cardboard container. Coming from the brewers of taxidermied squirrel fame, this could be regarded by many as nothing special, but as per the norm, I am a total sucker for clever beer marketing. Thus, this little box of madness pulled me right in.
The Bruery to Release Chocolate Rain to the Public
March 1, 2017 | Chea FranzFeatured photo contributed by The Bruery
The Bruery’s forecast calls for a 100% chance of rain… Chocolate Rain that is, and we couldn’t be more excited. What began as a single cask of beer that was released in 2009 for a Black Tuesday release event has since become a, wait for it, legendary brew that members of The Bruery’s exclusive beer societies have enjoyed. But for the first time on March 24, Chocolate Rain will be pouring for all. Read More

But, there’s more than just frosty breezes arriving from the north, there’s Imperial Stout — Two Brothers Brewing Northwind Imperial Stout.

Southern Brewing Co. | Southern Woodpile: Imperial Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels
November 9, 2016 | Mark ElliotFinally, the season is changing. The days are shorter, the nights are cooler, and the leaves are making a quick exit from the trees. I mean let’s face it… this was an unending summer. It’s all anyone talked about. We needed low alcohol brews that were loaded with fruit, because if we drank anything heavier, we may have literally died. Or melted. Or burst into flames. It was seriously hot out there.

12 Beers of Christmas Day 11 | Prairie Christmas BOMB!
December 24, 2014 | Cory PelcPrairie Artisan Ales – Christmas Bomb!
ABV: 11%
Merry Christmas everybody! Hope everyone gets exactly what they want this year!
I’ve already doted on Prairie Artisan Ales and, more namely, Prairie Bomb! on several occasions. When I caught word that Prairie was building a new bomb, a bigger and more powerful bomb, a Christmas Bomb!, I was of the utmost stoked. Billed as the O.G. Bomb! with “Christmas spices” added or “brewed with spices”, Prairie does well to not over-bill this as a completely different beer. It is, essentially, Bomb! with Christmas spices added or Bomb! “brewed with spices.” And that; that is why I love it so much!
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company | Narwhal Imperial Stout
November 12, 2014 | Brady AkersABV: 10.20%
IBU: 60
When I think of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, I usually think of the hop-heavy portion of their offering, from their classic IPA and Torpedo to the less traditional Flipslide Red IPA. I was both surprised and excited to see Sierra Nevada snag a bronze medal at this year’s Great American Beer Festival in the Imperial Stout category. A couple days after the festival, I saw this blingtastic brew at Argonaut and I was not able to turn it down.
Reuben’s Brews | Imperial Oatmeal Stout
November 6, 2014 | Katelyn PelakABV: 8.4%
IBU: 39
I first met the team at Reuben’s Brews in early 2013 at their brewery in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. At that time, they had already finished brewing their 50th batch of beer and they had been open for about six months. This is an impressive and important feature of Reuben’s Brews, as well as a very good reason to find their beer next time you’re in the Seattle area. Brewmaster Adam Robbings prioritizes giving his customers as many options as possible on the brewery’s twelve taps and brews in smaller batches in order to keep the recipes true to form. The emphasis on taste and the drinker’s experience has resulted in a plethora of awards and recognition for the family-owned brewery, including 15 medals at the World Beer Championships since opening in August 2012. Bow Wow Wow Yippy Yo Yippy Yeah, it’s all about Stouts and Team USA!
It has certainly been an exciting time for Olympic Hockey enthusiasts. From the variations to rules and regulations, to the anticipation and build up of certain storylines and the actual matches themselves, there hasn’t been much to complain about…except maybe the early mornings during group play. But what better way to start the day then with the All-American Laughing Dog Dogfather. Nothing barks hair of the dog like this Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout at 7:30 AM. Who needs coffee anyway? Corkscrews Wine Storage of Denver | A Beer Cellar Home Away From Home
July 9, 2013 | Cory Pelc 21845 W 12th Ave, Denver, CO 80204
Although they may not have “and Beer” in their moniker, they have been appropriated with that name by yours truly.
We all know much like wine, beer has the ability to age, evolve and develop complex new aromas and flavors. Think that Dogfish Head Olde School Barleywine is a loaded treat right now? Try it in 10 years, when it has smoothed out into a melodious elixir commendable only by a snifter. Time, along with yeast and bacteria, can polish a beer’s rough edges and unlock its full potential—or, given a few months too many, create a liquid best sent down the drain. I found the perfect place to help me prevent most drain pours and it is right down the street from my employer. Enter Corkscrews Wine “and Beer” Storage of Denver and how they are changing the face of craft beer and long term storage.
