Why does that seem so rare? As well, craft brewers, who routinely engage in community support, have not addressed mental health until recently. Maybe it’s because it seems hypocritical to produce alcohol and note support for mental health; but that’s a stigma that many hope to change. Malteurop Malting Co., Hollingbery & Son Hops, Eagle Park Brewing, Hope for the Day and many others have kick-started a collaboration beer called “Things We Don’t Say IPA” in an attempt to make mental health discussions as common as Monday morning quarterbacking. This is not to say that one should have a beer when feeling down. Simply, it’s that that people who make and/or enjoy beer should not only feel okay discussing the topic, but be happy to do so.

The latest and greatest New England IPA to hit my palate is Volume Integral, a hazy double IPA brewed with oats and wheat which creates a very plush mouthfeel. The oats and wheat play well with the hops used in this beer which are El Dorado, Azacca, Mosaic and Belma. All of these combined create a lot of fruit and melon flavors that are balanced very well. The hop star of the show has to be the Belma hops which tend to create an almost strawberry-like profile.

Ology Brewing Co. produced yet another phenomenal IPA with its Reactive Galvanization, an American IPA that reminds us just why IPA remains the king of craft beer.

The Tallahassee, FL brewery has its roots steeped in scientific research, and in fact, the very word “ology” means a subject of study–think “biology,” “archeology” or “beer-ology.” Head brewer Nick Walker is from a family of scientists and researchers. His grandfather studied taste and his father researched olfaction, the study of smell, which certainly came in use during the many, many beer tastings Nick has done over the years. Walker himself has a bachelor’s degree in biology. Put that all together and Ology Brewing emerges from this wealth of knowledge. Ology actually made PorchDrinking’s 2018 list of Rising Talent and they’ve only improved since then.

The IPA is easily one of the most lauded, debated, romanticized and scrutinized beer styles the world has ever known. December took decades to get here this year, but now it’s speeding by at an ungodly rate. The next few weeks are going to continue this trend I fear.
