December 13, 2022 | Scott GrossmanMexican beer has come a long way from the thin-bodied, flavorless yellow beverage chugged poolside on spring break. These days there’s a burgeoning Mexican craft beer scene featuring the robust and flavorful styles that craft beer lovers are familiar with. Read More

Ultimate 6er | Denver-Area Cinco de Mayo Beers
May 4, 2022 | Britt AntleyCinco de Mayo is nearly upon us, and to commemorate this day of celebration for Mexican-American culture, many Denver area breweries have brewed special recipes honoring Mexican tradition. A holiday that generates beer sales that rival that of the Super Bowl, Cinco de Mayo has become synonymous in America with parties that celebrate all aspects of Mexican-American culture from history to traditions to food and of course alcohol. While you celebrate with friends and family on May 5, look for the below brews to properly ring in the occasion.
Red Horn Brewery & Roastery | Todo El Día Mexican Lager
August 10, 2021 | Dan RenfroDrinking outdoors in August–in Texas–can be tricky. Trying to find something light enough to continue sipping while keeping flavor paramount is a difficult task.
Red Horn Brewery & Roastery makes it easy with Todo El Dia. This Mexican Pale Lager is a light, crispy brew that’s delicious even without limes.
Cinco de Mayo | A Collection of Mexican Lagers
May 5, 2021 | Mathew PowersCinco de Mayo has come to mean less about its history and more about parties filled with fishbowl margaritas, music and taco platters, and maybe that’s not such a bad thing. The Mexican-American relationship has undoubtedly been a strained one over the centuries. Indeed, such events as endless immigration issues, the Bracero Program and the U.S.-Mexican War (and subsequent Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo where Mexico ceded 55 percent of its territory to the U.S. — present-day Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah) mark the struggles between two countries. So, sure, there are plenty of real-life, geopolitical issues that can be discussed. And, yes, some confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence day, instead of its true meaning: the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (also known as Battle of Puebla Day). But, why not let it be a celebration of Mexican food and culture, even if it’s a bit cheesy (pun intended)? Maybe it’s good to forget the meaning and just have fun. At PorchDrinking.com, that means enjoying Mexican Lagers, demonstrated by the nine writers who recently showcased the style — enjoy!
Austin Beerworks | La Verdad Mexican Lager
April 28, 2021 | Ruvani de SilvaAustin Beerworks La Verdad is undoubtedly a champion of Texan Mexican Lagers. Its annual release heralds both Cinco de Mayo and the arrival of our sweaty summer season when lying by the pool or floating lazily down the Guadalupe is as much exertion as the weather allows any time after midday here in Central Texas. Now in its fifth year, the La Verdad was last year’s lockdown savior and kept us from parching even when we weren’t allowed in the water.
Estuary Beans & Barley | Noche de Mar Mexican Lager
April 27, 2021 | Brandon CohranWe’re still smashing the avocados for guacamole and cracking open Mexican Lagers this week here at PorchDrinking. Cinco de Mayo approaches; for most people, this holiday is simply a reason to drink tequila or cervezas all day. To hell with knowing the origins of, well, anything, right? However, we’re here to help you stock the cooler rather than to hand out pop quizzes. So, check out our series for Mexican Lagers you need to pick up for the upcoming holiday.
The newest Mexican Lager in our series for your day of lounging poolside or grilling is Noche de Mar from Estuary Beans & Barley in St. Johns, South Carolina, near Charleston.
Gravely Brewing Co. | La Bamba Mexican Lager
April 26, 2021 | Kindsey BernhardIt’s officially porch drinking, grass mowing, sitting by the pool and boating season. And some of the best beers to pair with those occasions are Mexican Lagers.
One Mexican Lager in particular that you’ll see a lot of Kentuckians pairing with those occasions is Gravely Brewing La Bamba Mexican Lager. La Bamba has been a fan-favorite at Gravely since opening in August 2018.
Broadway Brewery | Flor Blanca Mexican Lager
April 23, 2021 | Katie CamlinFrom Boulevard to Budweiser, Kansas City and St. Louis boast some of the largest breweries in the country. However, Missouri’s Craft Beer scene extends far outside of the most populous cities. There are many breweries in Springfield, the Ozarks and Columbia, Missouri, for example, that are producing quality brews with fiercely loyal local followers. These breweries see distribution across the state, and have begun gaining more traction as the craft beer market continues to grow. One such brewery is Columbia’s Broadway Brewery.
Cruz Blanca Brewery | Mexico Calling
April 21, 2021 | Jesse ValencianaMexico Calling from Cruz Blanca Brewery is the beer that Mexican lagers should aspire to be. In recent years, there has been an influx of breweries trying their hand at making a craft version of one the most macro styles of beer on the market. What you’re left with are good beers that end up tasting nothing like a Corona, Dos Equis, Modelo or whatever the brewer drew inspiration from. The beers tend to end up with some punny name consisting of Spanish words that a brewer learned during his high school spring break in Cancun.
Casa Humilde | Maizal
April 19, 2021 | Mike ZollerWhen you hear Mexican Lager you might typically think Corona or Modelo, but the style is popular in the craft beer community as well. These Lagers are usually a bit sweeter and made with flaked corn, which usually makes the style drier and crisper.

Great Lakes Brewing Company | Mexican Lager with Lime
June 30, 2020 | Kevin RisnerSummer has arrived like it always does, even in these rather unusual circumstances. Now that my favorite season is here, a spectacular variety of warm-weather refreshments have appeared. Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLBC) is no stranger to providing summertime tipplers and this year they have released multiple beers set to quench the thirst of the most parched beach-goer and barbecue attendee. Here’s a beer that will entrance the multitudes: Mexican Lager with Lime.
Beerology | A Little History Behind Mexican Lagers
May 5, 2020 | Korey DavidHappy Cinco de Mayo! Though you might be celebrating a little differently than usual this year, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a few Mexican-inspired craft beers. Plus, consider the positives: No dealing with blackouts in a crowded bar spilling their margaritas on your lap while you impatiently wait for chips and salsa on the establishment’s busiest day of the year. For some of you, a crowded bar seems like a wistful dream, something you might be longing for after six weeks of solitude, or perhaps you just miss being on the blackout end of the spectrum so you can forget about this nightmare. Regardless, if you’ve ever wondered where Mexican Lagers come from, here’s a little beerology to pair with your Cinco de Mayo crushers.
Santa Fe Brewing Co. | Pepe Loco
May 6, 2019 | Holly PriestleyNobody really knows where Pepe came from, but legend has it he was born in the back of a dingy bar. As the story goes, his first drink was tequila. There are rumors his father was a traveling luchador and accidentally left him behind after one of his matches. A pack of coyotes found him and raised him as their own. Surely, you’ll hear a hundred more stories about his origins but one thing is clear: Wherever Pepe Loco came from, El Campeón is here to defend good taste, wear tight pants and give you a victory dance.
