What We’re Drinking | January 17, 2020
January 17, 2020 | Constance Del RioSeventeen days into 2020 and it’s already been a year so far—Australia is on fire and we seem to have adverted WWIII (I know, super amazing topics!). Our staff is also getting back to a normal work week, tending to their families, and churning out amazing articles. So, grab a cold one and see what we’re drinking.
Preview | Poland’s One More Beer Festival Features Heavy Hitters
September 16, 2019 | Karl KalinkewiczOne More Beer Festival. The rallying cry I often tell my aching liver is actually the name of one of the coolest international beer festivals out there. Starting September 20, beautiful Krakow, Poland, will host two days and three sessions of incredible brews, with more than 180 beers from over 30 to taste.
2 Days 2 Nights | Bucharest, Romania
March 27, 2019 | Karl KalinkewiczWhen life gives you a handful of Boeing Max 8-shaped lemons, you make lemonade. Or when your flight for a quick weekend getaway is canceled, you jump on Skyscanner, put “everywhere” into the destination, and see what comes up for cheap. For me, this destination ended up being the Romanian capital of Bucharest, a city with a population of roughly three million that had its heyday in the ’20s and ’30s when it was hailed as the “Little Paris of the East.”
The Weekly Buzz | May 4 – 10
May 11, 2018 | Dan BortzI need to wake up at 4 A.M. to go to the gym. I’m not sure that this is the best way to live my life. I should be staying up late, drinking beer and waking up for work at the last possible second. What’s happening to me?! Anyway, here’s a bunch of stuff I found on Twitter and Instagram. Just because I’m not drinking, doesn’t mean you can’t have your own Weekly Buzz!

The Weekly Buzz | December 22 – 28
December 29, 2017 | Dan BortzNow this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. It’s a tale about how I was so overwhelmed with Christmas spirit that I hardly checked Twitter all week. Instagram also went largely unviewed. The following is a list of Tweets and Instagram posts that I managed to spot while zoning out during various family gatherings. We’ve all done it. This is The Weekly Buzz.
We hope you had the happiest of holidays and wish you luck in the new year!
Ultimate 6er | Age of Aquarius
December 28, 2017 | Niel StenderDuring a “Tropiquarium” birthday party for 5-year olds, surrounded by Komodo dragons and sugar-fueled children, I had a thought provoking conversation with a fellow adult about the upside of living in Switzerland — mostly the chocolate made by magic elves but also the feeling of living in a bubble. Crime is low, average net worth is high, debt is frowned upon, armies of pleasant public works employees keep the joint spotless – you know, just like the rest of the world. He suggested this is a good place to be since “the world is on fire.”
Billy Joel once said we didn’t start the fire, it was always burning since the world’s been turning, which is fair, but the fact remains the world feels like it’s on fire. Which brings me to the topic du jour – the Age of Aquarius.
What We’re Drinking | November 17, 2017
November 17, 2017 | Constance Del RioWith the new season approaching, it invites change. Change in weather, leaves falling, families coming together from far away and, for me at least, ending a job at a company I’ve been at forever! We here at PorchDrinking will be searching for clever ways to share tasty brews with this wet weather, I’m thinking hammocks! Cozy up with a blanket, start a nice fire and dive into What We’re Drinking.

Have you heard about this GABF thing? Apparently it’s starting to get pretty big! I also found a few job listings, photos from hop harvest and more than one made up holiday. Strap in, dear readers. This is The Weekly Buzz.

WarPigs Brewing | Lazurite
September 8, 2017 | Mike ZollerIn 2015, 3 Floyds Brewing Co. and Mikkeller opened up WarPigs Brewpub in Copenhagen. Now the two have teamed up to open up a location here called WarPigs Brewing in the United States, and now their beers are available throughout the Midwest. Their flagship beer, Lazurite, is a big fruity IPA that is quickly becoming a fan favorite.
What We’re Drinking | August 18, 2017
August 18, 2017 | Dan BortzIt would appear that the PorchDrinkers had a slow week. Personally, I found that I was getting too fat. This fatness led to a regimented, but not necessarily strict, diet and a week of “detox.” Not to make excuses, but I wouldn’t be surprised if other members of the PorchDrinking staff are finding themselves in the same boat. Sometimes you just need a short break from beer. Luckily, we always have a few die-hards to keep us afloat! This is What We’re Drinking.
Vinyl & Beers | Top 25 Artists That Went Solo
July 6, 2017 | Karl KalinkewiczAs we recover from celebrating the 241st anniversary of the original Brexit, I think it’s appropriate we honor those who fought for musical independence. These brave soldiers fought against egos, narcotics, less-talented band mates and guaranteed paychecks so they could feed their own ego, recruit their own band and cash larger paychecks. Like America before them, these music makers could not be shackled by their oppressors and, like our whale-friend Willy, broke free triumphantly to the sounds of sweet music.
Mikkeller | Chipotle Porter
February 16, 2017 | John AmanteaABV: 6.6% | IBU: N/A
It’s cold. Goddammit, it’s cold. For those of you not so blessed to be living below the Mason-Dixon Line, you’re likely in the midst of what’s been a long, cold winter. As the mounds of snow continue to grow and you begin to forget that the sun exists; winter tightens its icy grip this time of year. So, how can you fight back and stay warm? Should you bundle up with extra layers or rely on hand and toe warmers in gloves and socks? While those options are smart and practical, I tend to go another route. I avoid the cold by staying inside with beer, such as Mikkeller Chipotle Porter, the fuzzy slippers of the soul.
What We’re Drinking | February 3, 2017
February 3, 2017 | Dan BortzThe PorchDrinkers didn’t enjoy as many beers as we would have liked this week. Some of us succumbed to seasonal illnesses that made delicious beer turn to ash on our ruined palates. Others of us were in such dire straits that we were forced to turn to “doctors” for relief. Their strange tonics did the trick but, alas, could not be taken with alcohol. A fair few of us were just busy. That happens sometimes, right? The intrepid souls who remain offer you their libations of choice. Come forth and discover What We’re Drinking!

Ultimate 6er | Halloween Beer Costumes
October 21, 2015 | Niel Stender 2
When I was a child, growing up in suburban New Jersey, there was a Halloween costume contest every year at the park around the corner from our house. The process involved walking around in a circle, with other eager trick-or-treaters, so the judges could get a load of everyone’s gear. The winner for each category received a $2 bill, exciting stuff for a 6-year-old in *cough cough* 1986. I am proud to say I won this contest for one category or another several times. Now that I’m an “adult” I’ll go out on a limb and wager it may have been rigged since my mom was the mayor of our town. But that’s not the point.
Ultimate 6er | Super Trooper Sixer
April 1, 2015 | Niel Stender
ABV: A LOT
IBU: Not bitter at all really
In college, after a night of fun, my roommates and I came home to a choice of two movies. Caddyshack or Super Troopers? Always a difficult decision, though I can say Super Troopers took the advantage by about 120 or so watchings. Between this time spent burning the script, verbatim, into my head, and the relatively equal time spent doing the same with my brother, its not unreasonable to state that 75% of the words exchanged between myself and my brother are 1 liners from Super Troopers. So, when the rumor mill started churning about a sequel, I may have gotten excited.
Once the rumor was replaced with fact, the chaps of Broken Lizard (the guys in the movie) told the world that the studio would produce it but not pay for it. So they launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo with a goal of $2 million in 30 days. And they hit that goal in ONE DAY. With perks like “one of the cop cars from the movie” and tickets to “join us at Beerfest,” it’s not exactly surprising.
The Lizards note that on a daily basis they are asked the question “Who wants a mustache ride?” Though Super Troopers was a low budget, indie film, there is clearly a rabid fan base here. So, in honor of the Troopers rocking success ($3.2 million as of this writing), today’s Ultimate 6er will be wrapped around the characters that made the first movie so damn funny. Read More

Mikkeller | Spontanbeetroot
November 14, 2014 | John MaguireWhat’s the name of that beer? Damn you Mikkeller and your obscure names and labels! What are you? Seems to be a common thought every time one picks up a Mikkeller bottle. So many bottles with crazy names like Orange Yuzu Glad, Big Worster, Winbic, Wheat is the New Hops, and so on. All “inside joke” names aside, we’re always intrigued to try these innovative beers. Read More
