Ultimate 6er | Chocolate Beer: Perfect Any Day of the Year
April 25, 2018 | Mathew PowersValentine’s Day has its chocolate hearts and Easter its chocolate eggs, but chocolate beer can be enjoyed all year. And why not? Chocolate and cocoa are more than additions to dessert, they a delectable ingredients that enhance a multitude of savory dishes such as mole sauce, chili, barbecue and ravioli. Granted, chocolate beers tend to lean to the sweet side, but has anyone ever had a chocolate shake in the summer? Chocolate exists as a diverse, adaptable and downright delicious ingredient, and brewers have mastered its integration into beer. Here are six noteworthy examples of chocolate-infused beer (even if it’s been a while since the release date, the beers can be found on shelves, or in your beer buddy’s cellar).

Brewery Ommegang | Hennepin Farmhouse Saison
October 31, 2017 | Kurt BevilacquaWithin the craft beer culture, there is this quest to get your hands on the next great beer. To search and find those rare tappings or trendy styles requires strategy. This never-ending adventure to figuratively and literally quench that thirst, in itself, is enjoyable and opens a door for you to make new friends, memories and drink some phenomenal beers. This has helped drive the growth of the booming industry and encourages positive creativity among brewers. Although once I have tasted and checked a specific beer in on Untappd, the short-termed memory fades into the abyss and I am immediately on to the next one. That is why I like to take a step back every once in a while, revisit my roots and remind myself of why I even wandered down this trail in the first place. Read More
What We’re Drinking | October 20, 2017
October 20, 2017 | Constance Del RioIt’s been a crazy couple weeks here in the Bay Area. The North Bay is on fire, taking so many people’s livelihoods, homes, and wineries, and now Santa Cruz is on fire. Our air quality was on par with Beijing! Not to mention some people took advantage of the fires and looted, so not okay. This week the air quality has gotten back to tolerable levels and the relief efforts have been amazing to see roll in. Lots of Bay Area Breweries and Tap rooms held fundraisers for different funds! Take a load off and take a look at What We’re Drinking!

Beer Cocktail | Kriek Kocktail with Saint Benjamin Wit or Wit Out and Ommegang Rosetta
July 6, 2017 | Samantha StorySometimes, I just have a tough time making decisions, especially when it comes to what beer I want to try (I know, I know, #firstworldproblems. I hear your sympathetic violins). However, when a beer menu presents you with 15 choices, but your flight only allows for four beers, and the waitress is just staring at you because you can’t decide, it becomes an issue. So when I saw a cocktail of a kriek and a tripel, both of which I wanted to try, I thought “Genius!”(The cocktail was delightful, by the way). It’s summer though, and I want to keep it light & refreshing. I decided to find a kriek and a witbier that complimented each other’s flavors and was super refreshing.
Vinyl & Beers | Top 25 Artists That Went Solo
July 6, 2017 | Karl KalinkewiczAs we recover from celebrating the 241st anniversary of the original Brexit, I think it’s appropriate we honor those who fought for musical independence. These brave soldiers fought against egos, narcotics, less-talented band mates and guaranteed paychecks so they could feed their own ego, recruit their own band and cash larger paychecks. Like America before them, these music makers could not be shackled by their oppressors and, like our whale-friend Willy, broke free triumphantly to the sounds of sweet music.

Ultimate 6er | Gilmore Girls
April 13, 2017 | Chea FranzPhoto courtesy of Warner Bros.
Carole King said it best when she sang, “where you lead, I will follow,” in the intro song for the Gilmore Girls. Since the beginning, the show has created a cult following that’s multi-generational, divisive (are you Team Jess or Team Logan) and very loyal. For seven seasons I followed the Gilmore Girls around the town of Stars Hollow, through the halls of Chilton, attended Friday night dinners, and had coffee at Luke’s. I cheered as Netflix announced the release of a four-episode continuation of the series and then mourned when it was all over (seriously, what’s up with those last four words)? But what I love about the show is that it’s always there waiting for you. Frozen in time, from the span of 2000 – 2007, filled with kooky characters and questionable fashion choices, the Gilmore Girls welcome you to step into their world and enjoy the ride. Read More
The Weekly Buzz | February 17 – 23
February 24, 2017 | Dan BortzI didn’t have President’s Day off from work, but I hope that all of you had a free day to taste new beers. Being on a diet means that my beer tastings are limited, so I’m counting on all of you to tweet your experiences at me. I’m serious! Living vicariously through PorchDrinking.com’s readers is all I have (until the weekend)! Please?! Anyone?! I’m itching for a beer over here! Anyway… here’s The Weekly Buzz…
Brewery Ommegang | Abbey Ale Dubbel Ale
April 24, 2015 | Danny KingABV: 8.2%
My mother always says “Presentation is Everything”. Oftentimes, when enjoying an Ommegang beer, I assume she stole her personal little motto from these Cooperstown brewers. From factors as important as taste and quality to such seemingly inconsequential items as font choices, every inch of the Ommegang experience, from their early days to current day, is a masterclass in craft brewing.
Ultimate 6er | A Bevy of Belgian-styles
February 25, 2015 | Christopher Hilliard
Belgian-style beers run the gamut from light, bubbly pale ales to hearty, dark quadrupels. They can be bright, vivid, and effervescent, and they can be strong, savory, and bold. However they appear, they tend to make an impression. So much so that even the most adamant of non-beer drinkers (I’m looking at you, winos) can be won over with the right combination of fruit, spice, and alcohol. Read More
Roundtable Discussion | This Year’s Memorable Beers
December 24, 2014 | Kathleen Morton2014 was a year of good beers, but sometimes we have favorites that weren’t necessarily released this past year. We asked the PorchDrinking staff to name their most memorable beers. Little did we know, we’d get such a variety from all over the world!

12 Beers of Christmas Day 7: Ommegang Adoration
December 20, 2013 | Jason Behler10.0% ABV
As the shopping days wane before gift-giving commences, those in my line (the line of purchasing procrastination) get ready to start thinking of ideas for the buying spree. As has always been the tradition of my brother and I, we go out on the 23 or 24 of December and buy all of our gifts in a matter of a few hours. We have a generally good idea of exactly what we need to get, and we spend our time buying, not shopping. As gift ideas seem less and less inspired every year with gift cards being the easiest way to shop for everyone, I became inspired when I saw the Christmas seasonal from Ommegang brewery. The label of this beer features a silhouette of the three wise men bearing their gifts in the form of tulip glasses and bombers all in a boat the shape of a crown. Beer as gifts: sounds wise to me.
Iron Throne Blonde Ale – Ommegang Brewery
May 7, 2013 | Andy Manshel 2
ABV: 6.5%
IBU: N/A
I’m conflicted; after months of anticipation and searching high & low to find it, I paid the iron price for what was almost assuredly going to be one of my new favorite drinks. But after tracking for Ommegang’s Game of Thrones partnership Iron Throne Blonde Ale, I felt a little let down.
