Hopkins Brewing Co. | Sugar House Pilsner
August 6, 2019 | Tim HaranChad Hopkins, brewer and part-owner of Hopkins Brewing Company, grew up in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. Now, he’s crafting beers that pay homage to his past, like Sugar House Pilsner. The second batch of Sugar House Pilsner hit taps in mid-July and while it’s still an easy-drinking 4% ABV lager, this one features a slightly different recipe than the first.
Orange Blossom Brewing | Orange Blossom Pilsner 2
March 1, 2019 | Anna DacostaUsually a crazy, spontaneous weekend starts with a beer. In this case, it ended with one… or two. During football season, an unplanned game was the last move of the fun weekend, and tailgate time was cut short so a quality beer was needed stat! Orange Blossom Pilsner 2 was found through the crazy rush to make it to the game and since then, it’s been a staple in my fridge.
Dissecting Garrett Oliver’s “Beer Expert Guesses Cheap vs Expensive Beer”
December 17, 2018 | Scott Johnson 1If you’ve been paying attention to the Gourmet YouTube scene, many classic publications are rejuvenating themselves through spectacular new digital content series. Bon Appétit has been pushing forward with glorious junk food recreations in “Gourmet Makes” and fermentation experimentation in “It’s Alive With Brad.” America’s Test Kitchen has transitioned to online magnificently through highly informative videos on products and cooking techniques. But the series that’s been most interest in terms of flavor analysis is “Price Points” by recipe index Epicurious.
Brew Detroit | Cerveza Delray
October 11, 2018 | Danny KingOctober brings with it many things: changing leaves, the full onslaught of pumpkin beers and the end of outdoor parties. But my favorite part of October is, after the buzz of GABF, getting my hands on the Michigan medal winners. Luckily Michigan is a large enough brewing state that at least someone within a 30 minute drive will win something. This year, Brew Detroit snagged an International-Style Pilsner Bronze with Cerveza Delray, named after the beleaguered neighborhood just south of Mexicantown that is currently home to a lot of pollution but will soon welcome the Gordie Howe International Bridge (a welcome addition to everyone besides a company that is the literal embodiment of a bridge troll).
pFriem Family Brewers | Pilsner
September 18, 2018 | Jeremy FuerstPilsners tell the truth about a brewer’s acumen and prowess as there is no place to hide within pilsners; many beer connoisseurs rely on pilsners as a litmus test for a brewery’s overall quality. If beer styles were musical compositions, then pilsners would be the Inventions and Sinfonias of Johann Sebastian Bach. And trust us when we say that discerning beer lovers want to give pFriem Pilsner a careful listen.
Creature Comforts | Bibo Pilsner
September 10, 2018 | Brian HaitzWhen you’re in the dog days of summer, it can be difficult to feel refreshed. Luckily at PorchDrinking, we were able to find a beer to help cope with these elongated heat-heavy days. Meet Bibo, a refreshing pilsner by Creature Comforts Brewing Co. in Athens, Georgia.
What We’re Drinking | June 29, 2018
June 29, 2018 | Constance Del RioSummer is in full swing and the PorchDrinking staff is soaking up those late evening rays of sunshine with, you guessed it, some awesome beers in hand. From beach hangs to visiting breweries, our staff is making the most of their summer time so far. Here is What We’re Drinking.
Fretboard Brewing | Mellowship India Session Pilsner
June 25, 2018 | Craft Beer JoeIn a culture that is often obsessed with the notion of “more”, craft beer has fallen victim to chasing high ABV and over-hopped beers. But the real truth is, that … Read More
Summer Brew & Starting Anew | Rockyard Brewing’s Dramatic Makeover
June 14, 2018 | Seth GarlandI’ve always been a bit cynical. I’m not a rare breed in that sense; the beer world has many stubborn, cranky cynics. We’re the ones shouting at you to get off our lawns with your sour, hazy, glittery slush stouts as we rock cantankerously back and forth on the porch with our pint glasses full of clear, reliable IPA. But even the most hardened beer traditionalist among us can look forward to summer. In summer, we can rise from the ashes of our self-loathing like a magnificent, tipsy phoenix. Even if for just a season, we can crack a smile and enjoy the sun on our face while the bubbles of an unfamiliar brew caress our puckered lips.
In that spirit, Colorado’s Rockyard Brewing Company is showing us how it’s done. Shedding its skin and undergoing a major renewal of its own, the brewery has done away with ALL of its award-winning original lineup.
Eurotrip | DC Brau Goes to Sweden

What We’re Drinking | May 11, 2018
May 11, 2018 | Anna DacostaThere are many events in May during which we can pour a glass of beer and enjoy our friends and families. For these instances, we have a variety of solid beer choices to share with everyone to celebrate. It does create quite the dilemma finding space in the fridge for the amount of food and beer that joins us throughout the month, but we can all agree this is the best problem to have. Cinco de Mayo or the Kentucky Derby could have cleared out room for some noteworthy beers to chill. To fill the void, PorchDrinkers have plenty of good candidates to consider this week on What We’re Drinking. Read More
Schlafly Marks the Return of One of its Originals
August 28, 2017 | Jordan PalmerI’ve always been intrigued by pilsners. I feel this category of beer has sort of gotten the shaft. Like its first cousin, the lagers, pilsners may be suffering from a case of mistaken identity. As the population of beer lovers continues to embrace the art of craft brewing, it is this writer’s belief that lagers and pilsners are often incorrectly linked to macro breweries, especially in St. Louis, the city that Budweiser built. Modern Times Beer | Ice (Pilsner)
August 11, 2017 | Justin CarterSummer may be coming to a close but that doesn’t mean the temperature has let up. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area we’ve been bombarded with unseasonably stifling heat and sticky high humidity. This has meant that light beer has been a major staple in my refrigerator. Lagers, pilsners, session IPAs, and Gose are not normally in my wheelhouse but I’ve come to appreciate their low alcohol crushability.

Transient Artisan Ales | Czech Yourself
July 24, 2017 | Craig GonciarczykSummer’s here and in full swing, so going to the beach or hanging around outside are two common activities most people do while drinking beer. Since most people don’t want to wreck themselves, a good idea would be to Czech Yourself with Transient Artisan Ales‘ first lager.

Smartmouth Brewing Co. | Safety Dance Pilsner
July 13, 2017 | Scott JohnsonI have known about Smartmouth Brewing Company for a few years now, loving their Alter Ego Saison and enjoying the brewery’s delightful detailed scientific labels that adorn its year-round brews. The first time I had heard of Safety Dance Pilsner, the beer appeared as the Best in Show Winner for the 2017 Virginia Craft Beer Cup. So when I saw these cans in my local bottle shop, I knew I had to pick some up for these muggy, summer days.
Ultimate 6er | Surviving Your Big Move
July 10, 2017 | John AmanteaAfter nearly three years with two awesome roommates, I’m moving this weekend. And for the first time in 27 years of existing, I won’t be living with someone else. Exciting? You’re damn right. Stressful? You have no idea. Moving is one of those experiences when no matter how sure you are that you’re absolutely sure you have everything under control, there’s always something you’re missing. You might know where every single thing is going to go and the exact layout for your ideal living room, but once someone asks if you have dish rags your whole plan falls to shambles. Luckily, in the grand scheme, this big step and all the accompanying madness will all be worth it. Here are the six beers to get you through your big move.

Dovetail Brewery | Pilsner
April 25, 2017 | Bliss BillingsleyABV: 4.4 | IBU: 39
Brewed in the traditional process, Dovetail’s Brewery’s Pilsner is a trip to Europe in a Czech stein. The outside of the glass has circular divots patterned all around, amplifying the beautiful caramel color. This Pilsner receives its color from a triple decoction mash — the repeated boiling of a portion of mash, then returning it to the main mash. The head on the beer is thick and foamy, remaining stuck to the sides of the glass as you take your sips.
Savannah River Brewing Co. | No Jacket Required Pilsner
March 1, 2017 | Jose MinayaABV: 5%
When a brewery comes out of the gate with a Czech-style pilsner, you know they absolutely mean business! The Augusta, Georgia-based Savannah River Brewing Company held nothing back during their grand opening this weekend. So with a six-pack in hand after a great Georgia brewery tour, I had to let you know what I think!

The Veil Brewing Company | Child Support
October 17, 2016 | Scott JohnsonABV: 4.5% | IBU: 25
In my experience, there has been no brewery to grow faster from its amazing quality and devoted fanbase than The Veil Brewing Company. Thirsty audiences would flock across the state to Richmond every Tuesday to get their hands on The Veil’s collection of canned jewels. Those of us familiar with the East Coast trading scene would see The Veil’s collection of juicy, New England-style IPAs to give them a breakthrough of success on the level of Lawson’s Finest Liquids in Vermont or Tree House Brewing Company in Massachusetts.
