Austin Street Brewery | Obsolete Vernacular
August 21, 2019 | Kailey PartinThis story begins as many brewery stories start, with a friendship and a passion for home brewing. Austin Street Brewery, co-owned by friends Jake Austin and Will Fisher, opened in 2014 on Industrial Way in outer Portland, Maine. Together they spent years on Austin Street in Westbrook, Maine, creating beers on their homebrew system that they wanted to drink. In 2013, as the craft beer boom commenced, they took a chance and opened their brewery with a one-barrel system. When speaking with Jake Austin, he made it clear that their focus is to create “highly drinkable beer, not to chase trends.” It would seem that mission is working well for them as they recently opened a second, larger location in Portland’s East Bayside neighborhood.

There are few things that I love more than a good bowl (or perhaps two) of Salt & Straw ice cream. Every time I’m anywhere in the vicinity of Portland, Oregon, where the chain is based, I immediately find myself in line waiting anxiously for a few scoops.

November is the perfect time to start thinking about fun and festive holiday cocktails. Today I am sharing a seasonal inspired recipe that uses fresh pears and a pear beer. This beer cocktail represents fall and winter flavors including pears, cloves and vanilla. I used spiced rum to spice it up a little more but it does not overpower the delicate pear flavor. Read More

Roundtable Discussion | Relocating for the Beer
September 17, 2014 | Amber Dunlap 1As extreme beer enthusiasts, our PorchDrinking team knows their beer and they also know where to find it and be completely content for the rest of their lives. In this week’s Roundtable Discussion, I asked the team where they would relocate if their only criteria was excellent beer. Many are already living in their beer heaven. Others knew exactly where they’d rather be if beer’s the sole decider.
If you find yourself getting the itch to try on a new hometown, you may want to take note of their answers.

Ninety-seven miles Northwest of Portland, where the Columbia river meets the Pacific Ocean, is the gritty fishing town of Astoria, Oregon. This former center of thriving fishing and canning industries is a recognizable locale to anyone who has seen The Goonies (1985), Short Circuit (1986) or Kindergarten Cop (1990), all of which were filmed in this hilly, oceanside town. Coastal tourists, Oregonians and Washingtonians alike flock to Astoria for the charming downtown area, Columbia River Maritime Museum, Sunday market, playful harbor seals, Goonies house and, especially since 2007, the beer.
Beervana: Portland, OR (Part 2)
September 12, 2012 | Scott HoffmanOregon Brewers Festival (OBF from here on out): So let’s first go over some of the logistics of OBF. As I said in my previous post, there were about 80 or so breweries present, and it’s all outdoors. Unlike other beer fests, you also choose how much beer you get at each booth. Do you only want a sample? That’ll be one token. A full mug of beer? Four tokens. It’s really a beautiful system. Read More
Beervana: Portland, OR (Part 1)
September 6, 2012 | Scott Hoffman“I gave up clowning years ago.”
“Well in Portland, you don’t have to.”
Easy intro, I know. But here’s the thing—Portland is that hipster. This isn’t a knock against the city. I love Portland. Fantastic public transit, fantastic food, and the beer … my God, the beer. But yes, it’s a very hipster city. More so than Denver. More so than even Boulder. The house we rented on the east side of the city was actually called the “Urban Cabin.” Placard and everything.
