July 2, 2015 | Chris Day
This Friday, July 3rd, Denver’s TRVE Brewing Company will release bottles of Life’s Trade, a complex saison fermented with multiple yeast strains in puncheons and blended before bottling. Named after a Samothrace album, this beer is the first brewed in their new brewery and barrelhouse, the Acid Temple.
Roundtable Discussion | April Beer Month
April 15, 2015 | Kathleen Morton
In Colorado, February is known as Stout Month. And it makes sense, as the weather is still wintery and you need a drink that can fill you up.
That got me thinking, what kind of month would April be? It’s unpredictable, yet smack in the middle of spring, as we get amped up for summertime.
Event Recap | Saison & Farmhouse Invitational 2015
April 15, 2015 | Chris DayI don’t know about you, but after a winter full of stout months, big beer fests, and holiday ales, my palate is usually begging for a break. I’m craving something a little drier, more effervescent, and better suited to a warm spring day. In other words, it’s saison time! Read More

You know that guy from college that was, like, a champion beer drinker? You know, the guy who, no matter how you trained, prepared, or strategized, could single-handedly win Beer Olympics on his own – who you watched in awe as he made his way through a case of Natty completely unfazed? Well, for me, this guy is my friend Andy Hille. And from the moment I met him, I knew he had to be destined for beer greatness.

It’s an early spring morning, the first bit of sunlight on the horizon peeks through my south-eastern facing window and I begin to stir. The chickadees and robins are creating quite the early morning chatter. It’s more peaceful than my usual weekday alarm but I still grumble and roll over covering my head with my pillow. 5:30am – seriously?! I think to myself. As I try and coax myself back to sleep, I’m inundated by the crisp spring morning air wafting through my windows. Laden with pollen the air is ripe and wonderful. It’s what I’m sure Charmin was shooting for, but fell far short of, in their “Spring Breeze” detergent. The sun climbs higher in my window and I become more aware of the beautiful spring aromatics- growth, pollination, snow run-off and life. As the Colorado spring transitions to summer, I walk to the farmers market. On my way I cross Boulder Creek, a run-off fueled torrent raging through the middle of town. The sounds of earth erosion are almost deafening; I’m humbled knowing that what I’m hearing is but a fraction of the change the Boulder Creek watershed will see in its lifetime. The farmers’ market is bustling with people; young, old, families, children and smiling faces. I walk past a small stand on the northern side of the market and a 6-year-old boy Jason greets me. The Plowshares farmstand has the most beautiful arrangement of spring vegetables. After conversing with Jason about the creek, playground and squirrels I’m warmed from the inside by his charm and joy. I purchase a bundle of beets, mizuna, collard greens, and a bag of mixed salad greens from his mother. Walking back through the market the ripe aromas of fresh herb starter plants consume me. Basil, cilantro, parley, rosemary, thyme and lemongrass create an unforgettable floral bouquet. Read More
Crux Fermentation Project- Impasse Saison
January 23, 2014 | Andy HagemannCrux Fermentation Project in Bend, OR claims that for this beer they were “at an impasse”—use standard fermentation techniques to have a more controlled beer and greater yield, or use the traditional Belgian style of open fermentation to produce a more unique flavor profile. In an ode to the ages-old Belgian saison style, they threw caution to the wind and went with the latter. And as the consumer, we should be glad they did!

Stillwater Artisanal Ales and The Brewer’s Art’s Debutante
September 23, 2013 | Kristin HubbardStillwater Artisanal Ales and The Brewer’s Art’s Debutante
ABV – 6.40%
The abrupt transition from summer to fall usually brings an uncertainty to the style of a beer one craves. To drink a clean refreshing lager or to drink a warm malty brown ale or Oktoberfest? The debates conclusion seemed obvious when I considered the refreshing spicy cleanness of the Debutante Saison created by Stillwater Artisanal Ales in collaboration with the Brewers Art.

Cucumber Beer – The Ultimate 6er
June 19, 2013 | Cory PelcSearching for that refreshing brew this summer can be overwhelming while I stare giddily at the bottle shop coolers. I scan and scan until I find something that can pack in the flavor but also has a refreshing finish. I stay calm and I don’t get ruffled. I know I have found what I am looking for. It’s a Cucumber Cream Ale from Twisted Pine Brewery and it’s just one of the many green gourd guzzlers out in the market place this summer. To stay as cool as a cucumber this summer, walk with me through a myriad of tasty barley pops that pay homage to the cuke. To the cucumber beer patch we go . . .
