Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. | Big Shark Grapefruit Radler
May 1, 2019 | Jordan PalmerThe legend of the radler dates back nearly a century to post World War I Germany, when an innkeeper named Franz Xaver Kugler, opened a tavern and tried to capitalize on the newest craze of bicycling by working to have a bike path built right to his establishment.
On the day that thousands of bicyclists showed up demanding a beer, Kugler realized he would not have enough. He quickly remembered a stash of lemon soda he had, cut it 50/50 with his beer supply, and ultimately saved the day and gave birth to a legend.
The Weekly Buzz | July 27 – August 2
August 3, 2018 | Dan BortzSince we’re all gathered here around the Weekly Buzz hearth, allow Grandpappy Dan to spin a yarn about the good old days. A long time ago, fall seasonal beers — like pumpkin ales — used to be released in the fall, so that their warm spiciness and pumpkin sweetness could be enjoyed on cool autumn nights. Märzens (or Oktoberfests) would be released in September to coincide with Munich’s historic Oktoberfest festival, which runs from late September until early October. Much like the way certain big box chains stock bathing suits in February, these beers are releasing earlier and earlier. Does anyone really want to drink a Pumpkin Ale in July or August? I don’t believe that they do. Seasonality is a beautiful thing, but it is being lost as its lines are being blurred. If you don’t buy fall seasonals in August, they’ll stop releasing them in August.
Let’s make seasonal beers great again!

July 13, 2018 | Dan BortzAre you tired of hearing me complain about my job? Well, you’re in luck! My ridiculously long work weeks are coming to an end soon, and I couldn’t be happier. How does my employer expect me to waste time on Twitter while working a 70-hour week? Joke’s on them! I do it on the clock. Anyway, here’s all the nonsense that I discovered while I while shirking my responsibilities. This is The Weekly Buzz!

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company | Big Shark Lemon Radler
April 30, 2018 | Jordan PalmerLove. We all need love, right? I love a few things in life. Aside from my beautiful wife and the kids she claims are mine, my other great loves are biking and beer, or beer and biking. Now, in St. Louis it’s impossible to have one ‘favorite’ brewery, but I do have one favorite bike shop. I’ve been buying bikes from Mike Weiss and Big Shark for 20 years. They are MY bike shop. So, when I learned that my favorite bike shop was teaming up with one of my favorite breweries — Urban Chestnut, I may have teared up a bit. Really. A tear was shed.

February 16, 2018 | Dan BortzIt’s been another fun week on Beer Twitter! There has been so much going on that a bunch of things probably slipped past my net. Either way, I’ve got a fun collection of stuff for you in this week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz, so make sure your boss isn’t around, crack open a beer and start scrolling!

The Weekly Buzz | January 19 – 25
January 26, 2018 | Dan BortzIt’s high time that we discuss something very important. That thing is the NFC Conference Championship. The result was exactly as I thought it would be — a thorough shellacking of the Minnesota Viking by a vastly superior football team. Nick Foles led the Eagles to victory and will do so again in the Super Bowl. Philly loves to be the underdog, so keep underestimating them, Tom Brady! Oh… and I found some beer things on Twitter, too. This is the Weekly Buzz.
E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES!

The Weekly Buzz | December 15 – 21
December 22, 2017 | Dan BortzThis edition of The Weekly Buzz is physically difficult to write, After my workout today, I can barely lift my fingers to type. With my muscles chack-a-block with lactic acid, it’s going to take every ounce of my remaining strength to crack open a few beers tonight, but I will persevere because I am a champion. When the going gets tough, I dig deep and say, “Nothing will stop me from drinking this beer or writing The Weekly Buzz.”
Anyway… Here’s some stuff I found on Instagram and Twitter.

September 22, 2017 | Dan BortzToday is the first day of fall, although you wouldn’t know it. It’s supposed to be in the 80s again in Pennsylvania. Ridiculous. Oktoberfest beers are releasing, and I’m stuck here wondering how exactly I’m supposed to enjoy a ridiculously oversized Märzen in that kind of heat? I guess I will just have to suck it up and muddle through. Finish off those summer seasonals that you’ve been hoarding and get ready for The Weekly Buzz!

The Weekly Buzz | June 30 – July 6
July 7, 2017 | Dan BortzIt’s a federal holiday, an extra day off from work and, above all else, a celebration of independence. The Fourth of July is a celebration of our nation’s independence but, this week, we also found ourselves in a discussion about the independence of craft beer. In this edition of The Weekly Buzz, we’ll explore life, liberty (from Big Beer) and the pursuit of happiness. There’s no better way to pursue happiness than by enjoying a fresh, American-made craft beer, so I suggest you drink one while reading!

The Weekly Buzz | April 28 – May 4
May 5, 2017 | Dan BortzIf there was one thing that helped me get through a rough week at work, it is knowing that the social media coordinator at Wicked Weed Brewing has a much harder job. Any time a craft brewer is bought out by big beer, you can be 100% certain that a twitterstorm of epic proportions is on the horizon. It’s a meteorological fact. Ask any scientist. I can’t even get Wicked Weed in my state, and it’s still a sad turn of events. My hatred of ABInBev burns with the intensity of a thousand suns. They’ll probably merge with Walmart next, forming the Buy-N-Large corporation, which will eventually force us from this planet to aimlessly roam the galaxy (a la the Disney/Pixar film Wall-E).
The Weekly Buzz | April 14 – 20
April 21, 2017 | Dan BortzThe inclusion of so many Pennsylvania breweries was a happy accident brought on by sleep deprivation, but I’m sticking with it. I love the beers brewed in my commonwealth and thing that you should drink them no matter where you live. I will personally guide any and all beer tourists to the best breweries in PA. I mean… I’ll do it if I’m not busy. I’ll probably be busy… Have no fear, dear reader. We have plenty of fun the rest of the country in this edition of The Weekly Buzz, too.
The Weekly Buzz | March 31 – April 6
April 7, 2017 | Dan BortzI’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, “Work is for suckers.” The overtime checks are nice, but the more time I spend at work, the less time I can spend tirelessly searching Twitter on your behalf. My employers just don’t understand that I like my readers more than I like them. I sacrificed my own health and well-being by forgoing sleep and compiling this week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz.
The Weekly Buzz | March 10 – 16

The Weekly Buzz is ready to point you in all the right directions!
There’s a little pre-Super Bowl bonus content at the bottom, so make sure you read to the end!
