What We’re Cooking | Doppelbock Chicken Étouffée

June 4, 2020 |

This week’s recipe comes from Scott Johnson, our resident home chef. In his household, gumbo was served often, with Scott’s dad using a recipe from Emeril Lagasse that Scott’s brother would later adapt. Turning the standard chicken and andouille sausage gumbo made with white wine recipe into a dark étouffée was Scott’s way of putting his own spin on this Cajun classic. Read More

What We’re Cooking | Milk Stout Brownies

May 28, 2020 |

At PorchDrinking, we have several writers with a sweet tooth, and Karen Mills is no exception. Her Milk Stout Brownies (recipe adapted from Kitchy Kitchen) are the perfect complement for any occasion, rain or shine. Forgot milk, Karen recommends that you pair these brownies with your favorite stout or, in her case, some sort of barrel-aged goodness from WeldWerks.

What We’re Cooking | Deschutes Easy Porter Cupcakes

May 21, 2020 |

For this week’s edition of What We’re Cooking, PorchDrinking’s Emma Wargolet provides this Porter cupcake recipe that comes from Betty Crocker and was adapted by Deschutes Brewery using their Black Butte Porter. Emma loves this recipe because it’s easily adaptable, and if you’re short on time, you don’t need to make the frosting from scratch (don’t worry, we won’t tell). These Easy Porter Cupcakes are rich enough without being overpowering, and the beer provides complementary notes of chocolate and coffee. Deschutes’ Black Butte Porter is available year round, so rest assured you can bake off a batch of these cupcakes every season of the year. Enjoy!

November 5, 2018 | 1

Looking for the 2022 Midterm Election Night Drinking Game? Head Here!

Can you hear it? That’s the sweet sweet sound of silence on the horizon. We’ve finally arrived at election day, which means by tomorrow the barrage of political ads will be all but a distant memory. Until then, we thought we’d help make election day a little more entertaining with a 2018 Election Drinking Game.

Early voting numbers in several states have already dwarfed 2014, but the main event culminates on Tuesday, November 6 when millions of Americans will decide the fate of Congress, state officials and a host of other positions. After the polls close, there’s nothing one can do but sit back and watch the results. What better way to enjoy the tallying, than with a few drinks…and a game? It’s time for PorchDrinking’s semi-regular election night drinking game. Are you ready?

Hey PorchDrinkers! Gossip Girl here. Your one and only source for Manhattan’s elite. You didn’t think I could stay away for too long did you? It’s been 11 long years since I sent my first Gossip Girl blast and I’m feeling a little nostalgic. So what’s been going on with our favorite upper eastsiders?  I’ve got the deets on our favorite trainwrecks—and most importantly, what they’re drinking. Read More

Paying Homage to the Pioneers, PorchDrinking.com Explores the OGs of Craft Beer

August 6, 2018 | 13

We at PorchDrinking.com thoroughly enjoy covering craft beer trends and showcasing the newest beers. But, before terms like Brut, Milkshake, New England and even BBA entered the brewing-industry lexicon, beer fans were thrilled to taste Ambers, Pale Ales and some mysterious beer that may or may not have arrived from India. So, for one month, we are going to take time to remember some of those OGs of Craft Beer — the brews that made it all possible.

An OG beer showcase will publish each day for the next several weeks. It would be a daunting task to cover them all (we are discussing less than one-half of the beers on our list), but our writers selected beers near and dear to their heart, ones that were often gateway beers that lead to our love of craft. We hope you enjoy our homage to the abridged list of classics.

Niwot’s Powder Keg Brewing Closing its Doors Later this Month

March 2, 2018 |

Plain and simple, we’ve long exited the rainbows and unicorns era of the beer industry. We’re not wanting to turn all doom and gloom, but one can’t ignore the significance of the workforce downsizing announcements made in recent years from the likes of Stone, Green Flash, even Anheuser-Busch and most recently New Belgium, who last week announced a 4% cut to their workforce.

Beer Debate | The Great Groundhog Day Results Showdown

February 1, 2018 |

When Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his slumber, the fate of the winter is in his furry little paws. Will spring come early, or will winter be sticking around for six extra weeks? This change in season doesn’t only affect the weather but also the beers that we’ll be drinking. Northeast Region Editor Dan Bortz and writer Constance Del Rio are about to engage in a verbal Battle Royale about whether or not they’d like the groundhog to see his shadow. This is the Great Groundhog Day Showdown!

Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Let us know in the comments! Read More

2018 State of the Union Drinking Game

January 29, 2018 |

For many, President Trump’s first State of the Union speech will be a tough one to view without also enjoying a few beers. Why drink out of anger, though, when you can turn a negative into a positive by making it into a drinking game? Sure, you may still find the entire ordeal infuriating, but at least it will afford you an opportunity to the celebrate how craft movement made American Beer Great Again.

PorchDrinking Staff’s 2018 New Beer Resolutions

January 9, 2018 |

Welcome to 2018! The previous year proved to be a wee-bit tumultuous, and the craft beer industry was not immune to the chaos. But now we can put 2017 behind us and take hold of the one characteristic all New Years provide — a fresh start.

I think everyone deserves a beer year to remember. We hope that by sharing our New Beer Resolutions, we might help guide you towards a path to beervana in 2018.

National IPA Day | Mountain Region Roundup

August 3, 2017 |

What consists of the mountain region of the United States, if you didn’t know, is a highly contested debate. What we at PorchDrinking.com consider the mountain states are Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Nevada. Most of the natives from any of these states use the Rocky Mountains as a directional point of either east or west and will happily bring a 6-pack of our favorite IPAs on camping trips or hikes.

Here’s a small dent in the IPAs the mountain region–and us at PorchDrinking–like to call “local favorites.”

National IPA Day | Southwest Regional Roundup

August 3, 2017 |

From the lush green landscape of eastern Texas, through the dusty Llano Estacado in the Texas Panhandles and New Mexico and into the deserts of Arizona, there’s plenty of craft beer, including an abundance of floral, aromatic, tasty IPAs. One would expect the beer to reflect a region so vast, and so diverse — and it does. Here’s a sample of what’s good in the Southwest. Happy National IPA Day!

National IPA DAY | Northeast Region Roundup

August 3, 2017 |

As a civilization of internet-savvy beery drinkers, we have no shortage of seemingly random, unofficial holidays to celebrate, but there is none more vital to our palates than National IPA Day.

Falling on the first Thursday of August, National IPA Day gives us all a chance to hoist a glass in remembrance of our favorite Single, Double, Imperial, Triple, Session and New England-style hop bombs. This day also affords us the opportunity to seek out new hop-forward variations to enjoy.

National IPA Day | Midwest Region Roundup

August 2, 2017 |

West Coast, East Coast, New England… Midwest? Yes, here in the land of tornadoes, Great Lakes, major rivers, sweeping winter cold fronts, barbeque, corn, wheat and sausage, we like our IPAs, too. Heck, hops are even grown here in abundance. In the Midwest, as in every other region, IPAs remain the most prominent form of craft beer served, and there are many worthy of having them over and over again.

The difficult part is picking only a few that represent the Midwestern IPA scene. We can’t name them all, but we at Porchdrinking.com can provide a small taste — pun intended — of what the Midwest offers.

Privileged Sonz Beerz Teams Three of Industry’s Most Powerful Families

July 21, 2017 |

The following is a parody piece submitted by Call to Arms Brewing, because ostrich boots are funny and 30 day lagers aren’t that uncommon.

Perhaps you know the names: Franzia, Schlitz, Fieri – they comprise some of the most notable families and names pioneering the beverage and culinary industry in the 21st century. Those names bring power, and they bring clout, and they bring tons of unnecessary rings, bracelets and necklaces.
