Upland Brewing Company | Petal to the Kettle
Upland Brewing Company in Bloomington, Indiana is well known for their wood-aged sour beers. While those are distinct and worth trying, they brew plenty of other tasty beers. I’m a big fan of sours, so when I got my hands on their latest kettle sour, Petal to the Kettle, I was excited to have an easy drinking version to add to my cooler for the summer. It did not disappoint.
Neither Berliner weisse nor gose, Petal to the Kettle is somewhere in-between. This sour ale features hibiscus, rose petals and strawberries. The petals lend their deep berry-pink color to the pour and give the beer a subtle floral and almost tea-like aroma. Strawberry puree is added for a punch of fruit flavor, and lactobacillus is added to the kettle to create a polite tartness. Petal to the Kettle is an approachable sour, which is perfect for drinkers who love the pucker or someone who is just getting started in the world of American sour beers.
The Perfect Summer Sipper
ABV: 6% | IBU: 5
There are a lot of hot days left this summer and this is the kind of beer you want to stock in your cooler. Petal to the Kettle is ideal to sip after a long day on the beach or as you lazily cruise down a river, paddling occasionally and basking in the summer sun. If you want to earn your beer, crack into this one after a long bike ride or hike. #tartatfullspeed
If you can make it down to Bloomington, I’d recommend taking a tour of Upland’s production brewery and their new sour brewery, the Wood Shop. You can follow that with lunch or dinner at their original Bloomington Brewpub. Finish the day with a paddle on Monroe Lake with plenty of Petal to the Kettle in tow of course. Petal to the Kettle is available in 6 packs and on tap. Check out Upland’s distribution map for more information.
