The year 1984 brought some of our favorite classics to the big screen. Ghostbusters, The Terminator, Footloose, Sixteen Candles, Gremlins, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Revenge of the Nerds, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom made their appearance, but none resonated with audiences quite as much as The Karate Kid. Featuring a story line of a teenager navigating adolescence and dealing with bullies, The Karate Kid became the fifth highest grossing film that year.

Mike Hiebner, owner of ManRock Brewing Company, and brewer, Ryan Putney were discussing this iconic film one day while brewing. “At ManRock Brewing we like to have fun when we brew and decided to have some fun with beer names. At first we were just joking around, creating beer names using quotes from the movie. We laughed at a lot of the names we came up with, but a few of the names we came up with really stuck with us. So we dove in head first and decided to create our Karate Kid IPA series,” said Putney.

Their favorite scene from the movie is when Daniel is at the karate tournament and gets hurt from an illegal strike while one of the Cobra Kai cronies yells “Get him a body bag, yeah!” Using inspiration from this scene Putney said, “When we brewed this Triple Hazy IPA we knew that this beer was going to be dangerously drinkable. So “get him a body bag” became Get Him A Hoppy Bag. This beer packs a kick and is dangerously drinkable for its 9.7% ABV.”

Get Him a Hoppy Bag is a triple hazy IPA brewed with a blend of Yakima Valley Hops and a lush base of Great Western Malts. Wanting to keep the hop bitterness low they selected a yeast strain that could supplement the hops by producing some fruitiness. “We wanted a beer that was drinkable, had a perceivable thick mouthfeel and relied on juicy hops to drive the palate. Everything on this beer was manipulated to achieve the desired results,” said Putney.

In addition to a wide selection of artfully crafted beers, ManRock Brewing offers an amazing food menu. When asked what food items from the menu would pair best with Get Him a Hoppy Bag, two options came to mind for Putney. “Our BLT is the first that comes to mind. Thick country style bacon and house made avocado cilantro lime dressing are the perfect balance and cleanse the palate preparing you for the next sip,” said Putney, “The BST [wood-fired pizza] is a crowd favorite and is a perfect match, when paired with this Triple Hazy IPA. Wilted spinach, bacon, blistered tomatoes, mozarella cheese and topped with a drizzle of balsamic glaze.”

If you find yourself on the Central Coast of California be sure to stop into ManRock Brewing. You can enjoy a beer and some delicious food in their indoor or outdoor patio seating.
