RockSolid Brewing Co. | Ambrosia Fruited Gose
Ambrosia, the drink of the gods! At least that’s what we know according to Greek mythology. Ambrosia was the drink of choice given to the gods because it was thought to give them immortality upon consumption of this fine liquid. Bryan Crass, the head brewer forĀ RockSolid Brewing Company located in historic Ball Ground, GA said, “we think this beer is absolutely divine, worthy of the gods yet available to you!”
Ambrosia is a German Gose base beer. A Gose is a tart, wheat-based beer originating from the city of Gosler and later Leipzig, Germany. A Gose typically has a lemon tartness with a slightly salty taste due to the salinity of the local water. Bryan explains that for Ambrosia they use a combination of 50% malted wheat, 45% German pilsner malt and 5% unmalted wheat. After the beer goes through the kettle souring process, they then boil the wort and add German Hallertauer Mittlefruh hops. These hops are used for their mild bitterness and floral aroma. During the boiling process, they also add pink Himalayan sea salt to mimic the higher salinity of the water found in Germany. Coriander is also added to contribute a spicy component to the beer.
The reason we used those specific ingredients in our beer is that we want this beer or any beer we brew here at RockSolid to be as authentic and true to style as it can be. When brewing a particular style, we will try to get our hands on traditional ingredients from whatever region the beer originated from. This goes for the hops and malt and all the way down to the yeast strains and trying to replicate the water’s mineral profile in those regions. It may cost a little more, but it’s worth it when you taste the results, noted Crass.
We will say that all of the efforts that they put into brewing this beer really does pay off. They use a combination of sweet Cherry, Tangerine and Apricot for a total of about 2 lbs of fruit per gallon of beer. It really does drink true to style, upon the first sip you get the initial sweet fruit flavors with a little bit of that Coriander spice mixed in. A burst of Tangerine and Cherry follow along as it blankets the palate with a full-bodied flavor profile. It finishes with some subtle Apricot and a hint of salt that balances out the flavors from the sweet fruit. We find that the finish on this one is remarkable as it cleanses the palate for your next sip of Ambrosia.
While Ambrosia is a relatively new offering from RockSolid Brewing Co., it has been a huge success so far. “Our customers really enjoy the sour beers we have produced and we think the combination of flavors work really well in this beer”, noted Crass. This particular fruit combination was actually an idea from Crass’s girlfriend Brianna, but he also noted that all of the owners and employees are able to suggest ideas or flavors try in upcoming offerings. Ambrosia is slated to go out for judging at the Great American Beer Festival at the end of this month, and with the way this beer tastes and how it’s brewed, it should do very well in the competition.
