Brasserie Dieu du Ciel | Rigor Mortis

Brasserie Dieu du Ciel | Rigor Mortis
Kristin Hubbard

Summer time is here, and aside from the scorching heat and long anticipated summer nights, I sometimes crave a darker style beer to balance the light lagers and pale ales that have come to be the norm. On this particular day I was in the mood for a beer I’ve had my eye on for awhile, the Rigor Mortis from Dieu du Ciel out of Canada. One thing I know is that everything I’ve had from this brewery rocks my socks, and I couldn’t help but be drawn toward their Abbey-style brown ale.

The nose begins somewhat sweet like plum with a hint of chocolate and raisin. The taste profile almost reminds me of a tootsie roll with notes of brown sugar and toasted biscuits. Delightfully, for being 10.5% ABV, the heat is almost completely absent but it does have a slight weight to the mouthfeel. Carbonation is light with a thin lasting head and a pleasant cloying finish. All in all, I must say this beast was a treat and an oh so sweet adventure into what is always long awaited and so quick to finish.
