PorchDrinking Playlist | Deschutes Brewery

I built this little brewery in my garage and I just enjoyed brewing so much that I realized Sunday mornings, when I was out in the garage with music going and the flame going, and all my brewery stuff working brewing a beer, that I was happiest.’ ~ Brian Coleman of 2 Row Brewing from Rocky Mountain Brewing News

This week’s PorchDrinking Playlist is inspired by the close bond between music and beer. Every brewery we have ever visited had two very distinct characteristics. First of all, there is the lineup of signature brews to take care of our thirst. Secondly, intermingled with the hazy buzz of patrons enjoying their tasty suds, is the music in the background. More often than not, the music chosen for the venue is highly influenced by the employees of the brewery. If you ever have the chance to tour a brewing facility, you will undoubtedly be graced with the brewmaster’s playlist.

We reached out to Deschute’s Brewery in Bend, Oregon to see what they listen to while brewing such classics as Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Black Butte Porter, Obsidian Stout, and Abyss. We also asked why music is an important part of the whole experience.

What is your favorite Deschutes beer to enjoy while brewing?

As if we drink while we work! A Nitro Obsidian Stout tank release is a welcomed task.

What are you currently brewing?

Conceptually, about 100 beer projects… in reality, nothing at all. (I work at a desk)

How does music influence the brewing process?

Blasting your favorite music while brewing creates moments of: “Really?? I get to do this?’

What is your favorite Deschutes beer to enjoy while brewing?

Mirror Pond Pale Ale

What are you currently brewing?

Everything.

How does music influence the brewing process?

Mood setting. If I come in on a day shift at 6AM, I want something mellow to ease into. If I am approaching the end of my graveyard shift, I want something upbeat and fast to keep me pushing through. Production is all about rhythm — your playlist can help you keep this over a long shift.

Pinedrops IPA.

What are you currently brewing?

A Belgian trippel.

How does music influence the brewing process?

Music is incredibly important during brewing, as it keeps your flow. Timing can be key and your music helps you stay on track and focus on your current and upcoming tasks. It can also serve as inspiration when you’re creating or naming brews.

What is your favorite Deschutes beer to enjoy while brewing?

Black Butte Porter.

What are you currently brewing?

IPA’s!

How does music influence the brewing process?

Music helps me stay connected to the brew and help see it through the tank. Sounds weird, but it’s true! Also, it is necessary to put on AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ while plunging fresh hops in the PDX hopback.
